Erika Wagner revealed as a new playable character in Under Night In-Birth:Exe Late[st]

Fans of Under Night In-Birth are long overdue for an update to their 2D fighter. After the initial UNIST announcement, we’ve also learned that supposedly one more character is joining the roster, as we reported from a UNIST Amazon.jp listing. It turns out the listing was accurate, and Famitsu broke the news earlier this week.

Erika Wagner, nicknamed “The Crimson Knight” and “The Void Hunter” has appeared in the game’s lore. There’s no information yet as to how she actually plays, or what her battle style involves. She does appear on the game’s key art, however.

UNIST, an update to the console version of Under Night In-Birth:Exe Late, is on track for a console release on July 20th. Enkidu is the other confirmed new character, as well as console-exclusive Chronicle and Mission modes.

Stay tuned to Shoryuken as more details about Erika Wagner arise.

Senko no Ronde 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 and PC this September

Despite the genre’s habit of sticking to some tried-and-true conventions, there are some fighting game franchises that try to break the mold. One such franchise is the Senko no Ronde series of games, which combines traditional fighting game mechanics with those of a scrolling shooting game. The result is a game that takes both traditional 2D fighting game space control and projectile combat onto another level.

Now, Degica Games, Chara-Ani, and G.rev have announced that the latest installment of the series, Senko no Ronde 2, will be coming to both PlayStation 4, and PC (via Steam) on September 7. The digital edition of the game on PlayStation 4 in Japan will cost ¥ 4,800 ($43.50 USD). Meanwhile Kadokawa will also be releasing standard and limited edition physical copies of the game for ¥5,800 ($52.50 USD) and ¥9,800 ($88.70 USD) respectively.  Included in the limited edition of the game are the  “Senko no Ronde 2 Materials Guide” creation materials book, a creation materials DVD, and the original soundtrack CD.

As for the West, a similar set of digital–as well as standard and limited edition physical releases–are also planned for PlayStation 4. Details on these, however, have not yet been released.

In the meantime: here is the intro movie, and some gameplay footage.

Stream.me gives $6,000 to Skullgirls Tour, sending 7 international players to Combo Breaker 2017

Skullgirls is fairly atypical fighting game community. Most fighters tend to start strong, gradually losing steam as time goes on. Skullgirls on the other hand started off poorly, with hardly any tournament activity the first year–outside of the Evo side tournament. Since then, the community has slowly-but-surely built up steam, today enjoying a community size larger than ever before, despite being 5 years old.

Part of the community’s growth has in the past year manifested itself in the form of the Skullgirls Tour, which has been a community effort to create more visibility for itself by charting out the game’s tournament calendar. This effort has gained a lot of attention from the overall community, notably from Stream.me, who announced it was donating $2,000 to the Skullgirls Tour to get international players out to Combo Breaker, Skullgirls’ biggest event for the last 3 years running.

To celebrate that $2,000–and to raise even more money–the team behind the Skullgirls Tour held a charity stream showcasing international talent from the world over. During this broadcast, Stream.me donated another $4,000 to the cause, which–combined with the money raised during the stream itself–was enough to send seven players (each from a different international country) to Illinois’ Combo Breaker 2017, which is May 26th-28th.

Three new characters revealed for ARMS; Global beta “Testpunch” announced

Nintendo ran its ARMS Direct stream today, and from it sprung a flurry of new content!

First off, there was the reveal of three new characters. There’s movie star Twintelle, who has a sub-mechanic that initiates a sort of “Bullet-time” freeze, allowing her to dodge incoming attacks.

There’s the clockwork cop tag-team Byte and Barq. Barq, the robot dog by your side, attacks independently from Byte, and can serve as a spring pad for you to jump off of.

And last but not least, there’s “snakeboarder” Kid Cobra. I’m going to tell you right now that he has a weapon called the “Slammamander.” I feel it’s really important that you know that.

Several versus modes were revealed during the direct feed:

  • Fight: Your typical 1v1 mode.
  • Team Fight: 2v2 mode where your ally is chained by a string to you. Friendly fire was shown.
  • V-Ball: Volleyball mode.
  • Hoops: Versus mode where you try to literately dunk your opponent through a basketball net.
  • Skillshot: A target breaking mode.
  • 1-on-100: Survival mode
  • ARMS test + Training Mode: ARMS mode lets you try out randomized combinations, and Training Mode appears to be a glorified tutorial mode.
  • Online versus: Standard online versus that also allows you to play other modes while searching for an opponent.

Nintendo also revealed that there’s an online demo event coming called the “ARMs Global Testpunch.” You can download the demo now on the Global E-Shop, then participate in the event on the following days:

Nintendo also appears to be confident enough in ARMs to promise that all future post-launch content will be free:

ARMs launches on June 16th for the Nintendo Switch.
