Fade In! Capcom Celebrates Street Fighter 2010’s 26th Anniversary with These CFN Profiles

Back in August 1990, Capcom released a side-scrolling action platformer known as Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight. It was marketed as a futuristic spin-off title to the original Street Fighter, despite having nothing to do with the original franchise. However, Capcom USA, in an effort to create SOME form of link to the original series, changed the protagonist’s name from Kevin Straker to Ken, implying that he was the same Ken Masters we all know and love, who became a futuristic scientist 25 years after returning home following a victory in the original World Warrior Tournament. However, the game has become infamous for its difficulty, soundtrack, graphics and unique game mechanics, and it’s remained somewhat of a joke among SF purists. In celebration of the title’s 26th Anniversary, the CFN Portal site has released character profiles on the two main characters of the game, in addition to formally stating where the title falls in terms of the overall canon of the Street Fighter universe.

Released in 1990 for the Family Computer (the Japanese equivalent of the Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as the Famicom), it sported the name “Street Fighter,” even before the arcade edition of “Street Fighter II” (1991). It was not a fighting game, but a side-scrolling action title, in the same vein as “Mega Man,” “Ghosts N’ Goblins,” and “Strider.” It’s setting is in a Parallel Universe, in respect to the world of SF.

Basic Info:

Name: Kevin Straker
Height: 180cm
Weight: 160kg
Blood Type: Unknown
Birthday: February 15
Home Country: United States
Likes: Justice, Peace
Dislikes: Parasites

He’s a galactic cyborg policeman, in a 2010 Earth where humankind has begun to colonize and emigrate other planets, fighting against heinous and brutal criminals who implant themselves with “armored insects” named “Parasites.” His codename is MX-5. He could use sonic energy bullets as weapons, fired from his punches and kicks, and an emergency evasive flip jump (a back somersault). During the flip, he is totally invincible, and if he has taken shield capsules, he can shoot flip shields from his feet, in a combination of both offense and defense!

As mentioned, in the overseas version, “Kevin” became “Ken”: after his victory in the Street Fighter tournament, he triumphantly returned to the U.S.A. and enrolled in university. After 25 years, he once again fights–to find the culprit who killed his friend and fellow researcher Troy! (If you decide to accept this as a parallel timeline…)

Next up is the game’s antagonist, the maniacal Dr. Jose:

Basic Info:

Name: Dr. Jose
Height: 171cm
Weight: 89kg
Blood Type: Unknown
Birthday: April 12
Country of Origin: USA
Likes: Studies, Coffee
Dislikes: Celery

Street Fighter 2010 Dr. Jose

He’s an authority in the field of biotechnology, and developed the “Armored Parasites,” able to multiply the abilities of anything they infect: be it plant, animal, or machine. He aims to create the perfect and strongest lifeform.

In the USA version, he’s not “Jose,” but becomes “Troy.” Troy is Ken’s fellow researcher, and has developed the “Cyboplasam,” to enable the migration to other planets by, and make life possible for, the human race, but he is killed and his studies stolen…

That does it for another pair of Profiles. Do you have any fond (or otherwise) memories of playing Street Fighter 2010? If so, leave them in the Comments section! You can also check out CFN Profiles for the original characters from Cannon Spike here, as well as some other non-canon characters from another SF spin-off, the trio from the canceled Capcom Fighting All-Stars, here.

LCD and UA|Bass Discuss the Current Position of Killer Instinct in the Brand New “State of KI” Podcast

With Killer Instinct barreling towards the KI World Cup in early 2017, it’s only natural for players to want to pump the brakes for a second in order to take stock of the overall meta of Season 3, and see where the game may be heading. Acting as a way for top players to come together and discuss such issues, LCD has started a brand new podcast titled “State of KI” where he and fellow top level Killer Instinct players come to talk about what they feel is good about the current meta, what could be changed for the better, and their ideas on how to make sure that Killer Instinct does not wane in popularity.

For this first episode, LCD chats to one of Ultra Arcade’s leading lights, Kenneth “Bass” Armas about various issues like the problems with Season 3, how they think Killer Instinct could attract big names from other fighting games, and whether a Season 4 of KI is necessarily needed. The recording is in two parts and it is a little quiet, so pump up the volume and have a listen to what these pros think about the current state of Killer Instinct. With Patch 3.4 on the way in the near future, Killer Instinct is at a pivotal moment as the patch may soothe many of the issues raised in the podcast, or it could further alienate players who have fallen out of love with the game. I hope it is the former.

Super Smash Bros. Melee Pro Hax Receives Poor Prognosis on Wrist Condition

Super Smash Bros. Melee is considered one of the most execution and tech-heavy games in existence. Performing wavedashes and L-cancels all in rapid succession on a Gamecube controller can take its toll on the hands. A notable case of such pain is Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, who has talked at great length about his hand problems.

It appears that the physical toll of playing competitive Melee is trying to claim another victim. Professional player Aziz “Hax” Al-Yami–a Fox main from New York–has been inactive on the Smash circuit since he took first at Collision XIII in April due to a hand injury. Upon speaking to doctors, Hax was told that he has a calcified flexor carpi ulnaris in his forearm. Due to his young age, doctors are reluctant to remove his FCU, despite Hax’s condition having “only worsened over the past 2.5 years.”

This is the latest in a laundry list of medical issues for Hax, who has had to take multiple hiatuses over the years for hand issues as well as insomnia. While he is currently looking for doctors to bring him under the knife to correct his condition, he remains inactive in Melee.

ZeRo Recognized By the Guinness Book of World Records for Longest Winning Streak in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

As competitive gaming grows, more and more players are getting their achievements recognized as world records: the Guinness Book of World Records has already recognized players such as Daigo Umehara and Ryan Hart for their own achievements, and now another player joins their ranks.

Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios from Team SoloMid has been noted in the Guinness World Records 2017 Gamer’s Edition for holding the longest winning streak in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. From November 2014 to October 2015, ZeRo won an total of 53 SSB4 tournaments in a row.

ZeRo has uploaded his own reaction to this news to his YouTube channel, in this video:

ZeRo’s winning streak in Super Smash Bros. cemented his place at the top of the competitive Super Smash Bros. for Wii U hierarchy, much in the same way that EG|Justin Wong’s own 5 year win streak in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 established him as a legend in that game.

We here at Shoryuken congratulate ZeRo on this achievement!

ClayFighter Now Up for Grabs as Interplay Sells the Majority of Its Intellectual Property

Checkbooks out, fighting game developers: one of the 90s most infamous fighting game franchises is now on the market. As part of a massive selling of intellectual property and video game assets, Interplay is now offering rights to many of its franchises and characters to the highest bidder. This includes characters like Earthworm Jim, games like Sacrifice, Battlechess, Dark Alliance and the most important one, ClayFighter.

There was an planned remake of ClayFighter which was supposed to hit stores this year from Interplay, but with this mass IP sale happening, this remake has most likely been canned. So, if any potential developers out there want to remake ClayFighter for a new generation–adding in online play, new clay based characters, and actually balancing the game so that one character’s low forward can no longer outrange the rest of the cast, combo into itself, and cause stun–now is your chance!

Mai Natsume Faces Es in This BlazBlue: Central Fiction Gameplay Clip

The robust cast of the upcoming BlazBlue: Central Fiction is rounded out by two console-exclusive characters, Mai Natsume and Es. Recently announced, Mai wields a spear which she uses for dynamic jump-ins, and a chargeable projectile that she can steer.

While information is still scarce about her, there’s captured footage of Mai’s fighting Es from an ArcLive stream. The clip shows a lot of her attacks and gameplay as well as her new stage and music.

While we’ll have to wait until the October 6th Japanese console release to properly play either of them, anyone who preordered BlazBlue: Central Fiction now has access to a playable demo. There is no word yet whether that will be the case for US or European preorders.

Excited for Mai and Es? Did you get your hands on the demo yet? Let us know in the comments below!

SPLITFRAME’s New FS Transporter 2 R Arcade Stick Bag Now Available for Preorder

SPLITFRAME’s FS Transporter arcade stick bags are some of the best options players have for carrying their arcade stick with them. Sadly, the popularity of these items means that they tend to sell out quite quickly. Now, for those who still haven’t gotten a chance to pick one of these up, SPLITFRAME has some great news: they’ve just opened preorders for their latest iteration of the FS Transporter line, the FS Transporter 2 R.

The FS Transporter 2 R is an evolution of the already successful FS Transporter design: specifically, it’s based on the FS Transporter 2 that they released at Evo 2016. As with the previous versions, the FS Transporter 2 R is designed to fit most of today’s biggest arcade sticks from the HORI RAP4, MadCatz Tournament Edition 2, and even the massive HORI RAP Premium VLX.

Improvements to the FS Transporter 2 R include higher quality fabrics, triple reinforced stitching, and waterproof zippers to help keep moisture out.

The FS Trasporter 2 XL will retail for $99.98 when it ships later in the year. However, those who preorder it get the discounted price of $84.98.
