Bandai Namco Possibly Prepping Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo’s Next Console Launch

Nintendo’s next gaming platform, codenamed Nintendo NX, may have a number of Bandai Namco Entertainment-developed products available at launch, including Super Smash Bros.

Bandai Namco worked closely with Nintendo on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, assigning Soulcalibur art and sound director Tetsuya Akatsuka and the entirety of the Tekken team to the project to assist Sora Ltd. and director Masahiro Sakurai.

These details come courtesy of Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto, who has previously offered up early details on other Nintendo titles. He later clarified that he wasn’t sure if it was an entirely new Smash installment, opening up the possibility that Bandai Namco may instead be developing a port of the most recent release on Wii U.

As with all things related to the Nintendo NX, this news is merely a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Mortal Kombat XL Listing Hints at Additional Skin Pack

It seems the folks at NetherRealm Studios may be packing more into Mortal Kombat XL than we’ve heard so far, and no, these new additions aren’t related to PC compatibility.

On top of all the characters and expected skin packs we’ve already seen, the Xbox store listing for the Mortal Kombat XL pre-order points to upcoming medieval costume options for a handful of fighters.

Since the listing of this particular bit of downloadable content comes beneath the bundle details section and appears in text form only, we have no idea what to expect. Will Quan Chi ride up on a battle steed in full barding while sporting a lance in one hand and his glowing skull in another? Will some dismembered character make obnoxious Holy Grail references while lying limbless on the ground? We’ll have to wait and see.

Mortal Kombat XL will be making its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 1.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Free for PlayStation Plus Subscribers in February

The latest round of PlayStation Plus perks will see Persona 4 Arena Ultimax become free to download for the month of February.

While many have gravitated towards other Arc System Works franchises like Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, their Persona collaboration with Atlus has seen a fair bit of play since its surprising reveal, with appearances at both Evo 2013 and 2015. Unfortunately, various issues have kept competitors from getting their hands on the latest arcade revision, but that doesn’t mean you can’t check it out, especially when it’s free.

Folks can expect to grab Persona 4 Arena Ultimax for PlayStation 3 after PlayStation Network updates on February 2.

Pokémon Announces the Pokkén Tournament Championship Series

The Pokémon Company has long supported competition in both their video game and trading card releases, and that is about to extend to the upcoming Pokkén Tournament.

Starting with the title’s appearance at Evo 2016, the Pokkén Tournament Championship Series will give players the opportunity to compete for prizes and travel to the world championships in San Francisco, California this August. Pokémon also plans to include the title in their national festivities.

This decision follows Pokkén’s warm reception at last year’s world championships, which included an exhibition event featuring players like Evil Geniuses’ Justin Wong, Tempo Storm’s RIP, and HugS.

Pokkén Tournament is scheduled for a worldwide Wii U release on March 18.

Terry Flanagan-Derry Mathews rescheduled to March 12

An injury to WBO lightweight Champion Terry Flanagan (29-0,12 KOs) has forced his world title defence against Derry Mathews (38-9-2, 20 KOs) at the Echo Arena in Liverpool to be rescheduled from February 13 to March 12 at the same venue.
The entire February 13 card is postponed to the new date, although one of the undercard fights, British and Commonwealth light middleweight champion Liam Williams against Nav Mansouri, is off because Williams is ill with a viral infection.

Capcom Looking Into Beginner Street Fighter V Tournaments for Casual Players

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono has given a ridiculous amount of interviews since Street Fighter V was first revealed, but his core talking points have remained the same: the developers are looking to reset the competitive playing field and entice new players to join the ranks of experienced veterans. One way Capcom working towards that goal is reducing the execution barrier, but they are also planning to reach beginners with their very own events.

Speaking to Engadget, Ono let a few small details slip. While they likely won’t get off the ground this year, Capcom is currently in the early phases of setting up tournaments to welcome less experienced players into the competitive fold.

“[W]e’re looking into creating tournaments geared more toward the casual player. In Asia, we’ve already started something where we’re going to have college students compete with each other; that’s one of the things we’re doing,” Ono explained. “We also have plans — it’s still in the planning phase — but we’re talking about maybe a parent/child tournament where the parent and their kid enter together.”

Ono said their inspiration comes from the world of baseball, where highly-skilled players participate in the major leagues but interested parties who may not be able to compete at that level organize their own neighborhood leagues. “We’d like to create an environment for Street Fighter where people can do that at a casual level and get together and just play,” he finished.

In any case, Street Fighter V is shaping up to be an excellent starting point for players interested in moving past their living rooms and netplay lobbies to places like Evo. Let’s hope Capcom’s intentions pay off in the long run.
