RChusan, Leslie, and ZeroKage Battle at Mortal Kombat X Asia Pacific Championship’s Singapore Qualifier

Last weekend saw the second leg of the Mortal Kombat X Asia Pacific Championship take place in Singapore. The tournament featured a good number of the country’s best players, who turned up for a chance to fly to the finals in Thailand this June.

Among those in attendance were South East Asia Majors 2013 Injustice: Gods Among Us champion RChusan, looking to make his mark again in yet another NetherRealm Studios game, as well as ZeroKage and Leslie, that latter of which took a break from beasting Ultra Street Fighter IV competitions with Sagat to test out Mortal Kombat X’s Kung Jin.

Sadly, the event wasn’t streamed, but the finals matches were recorded and can be viewed below courtesy of GameStart Asia.

If you’re interested in seeing more of what this region brings to the table in Mortal Kombat X, be sure to go back and watch replays from the Philippine qualifier as well.

Mortal Kombat X’s Kung Lao Builds Quick Meter with Newly-Discovered Bug

UPDATE (10:37 AM PDT)According to NetherRealm Studios’ Paulo Garcia, the developers have known about this issue for some time and will be patching it out in the next major update. He also stated that the Ermac meter drain bug we reported on yesterday should be hotfixed out of the game sometime today.

Special thanks go out to thisguywhoisnotimportant for making us aware of this in the comments.

Glitches on glitches on glitches.

Although Mortal Kombat X recently saw extensive fixing with its most recent patch, some new problems have arisen with another veteran fighter. Apparently, if Kung Lao performs a teleport on wakeup, he gains a full bar of meter, an issue very similar to a corrected Ermac bug. This time around, however, the glitch isn’t confined to a single variation.

Of course, this also comes with its own unique situations due to its rather unsafe nature. Sure, you get a free bar of meter, but if your opponent happens to be waiting for the teleport, they can easily punish with their highest-damage combo. Then again, the extra resources can instantly give a crafty Kung Lao access to a breaker, making this hypothetical combo all for naught should it connect.

In any case, it’s apparent that this was more than likely not meant to be in the game, and it remains to be seen what NetherRealm Studios intends to do about it, as their hotfix system gives them the ability to address bugs like this on a regular basis. But with Combo Breaker hosted in Chicago this weekend and an additional $10,000 on the line, it’s going to be hard to find a winning strategy that makes everyone happy.

Mortal Kombat X Nearly Matching Ultra Street Fighter IV’s Registration Numbers at Combo Breaker

mkx-dvorahsubzero-622-crop

Ever since its initial release in 2009, Street Fighter IV’s popularty has been leagues ahead of all other titles in the fighting game community. While Marvel vs. Capcom 3 kept pace at times, games from other developers have almost always played second (or in this case, third) fiddle to the Capcom properties.

But these games weren’t a next-generation Mortal Kombat.

Upon release, Mortal Kombat X saw explosive success, both financially and critically. Thanks to its added casual draw, players from all walks were able to find something they liked about the title, from the engaging story mode to competitive gameplay updates. While that hasn’t necessarily meant high registration numbers at tournaments, it seems like that’s all going to change with Combo Breaker.

According to lead organizer Rick Thiher, Mortal Kombat X has closed the gap with Ultra Street Fighter IV in terms of pure registration numbers, and was trailing by only three players this afternoon.

The spiritual successor to Ultimate Fighting Game Tournament, this Chicago event is bringing quite a bit to the table in terms of pot bonuses. One such bonus came directly from Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios, who saw fit to shell out an additional $10,000 for Combo Breaker to reward to their finalists.

Could Mortal Kombat X’s casual appeal be bringing an influx of new players into the larger fighting game community or are more folks trying their hand at the title thanks to the money involved? It’s impossible to say at this point in time, but no matter the case, it’s ridiculously exciting to see a brand new game go toe-to-toe with Ultra Street Fighter IV and succeed.

Combo Breaker is scheduled for May 22-24. Registration ends tonight at 10 PM PDT, 1 AM EDT (just under two hours from now), so don’t miss out on taking part in one of the year’s largest events.

Ermac’s Master of Souls Variation Can Completely Drain Your Meter in Mortal Kombat X

In Mortal Kombat X, Ermac’s Master of Souls variation is equipped with projectile that, when meter-burned, can drain a single stock of meter from the opponent on hit. However, it turns out that this move can be improved significantly.

In the video below, El Chakotay demonstrates how Ermac can now cause his opponent’s resources to draining past that single bar, by first hitting them with a regular Soul Ball and eventually following that up with the meter-burned version. The only way for this to stop is if the opponent is hit with another attack from Ermac.

Check out the video below, but please take note that some of the language used here may be a bit NSFW.

Enter the Evo 2015 Indie Showcase!

Attention, independent game developers: The Evo Indie Showcase is back for Evo 2015, and we want you to enter!

evo-logo-baribariball-nidhogg-622-crop

Why Evo?

Indie games and fighting games have a lot in common; we both come from scrappy, grassroots backgrounds; we appreciate well-crafted game design and mechanics; we understand that games are only as fun as the people you can play with and talk to. And, hey — Evo itself is an independent production.

Participating in the Evo Indie Showcase isn’t just about putting your game in front of your potential players, though; it’s also about seeing what some of the game-breakingest people in video games can do with what you’ve made. You might just learn a thing or two about your own game — and maybe even meet a few people who can help you make it better.

If you missed last year’s Evo Indie Showcase, go read about it in our Inside the Indie Showcase posts (Part 1 and Part 2) to see why the devs behind TowerFall, Nidhogg, Lethal League, and Yatagarasu (just to name a few) showed up in full force.

How do I apply?

The application process is simple: Just go to the Media Indie Exchange (MIX) site over here and click on “Developer Registration” on the right-hand column. If you have any issues, email Justin Woodward at justin at mediaindieexchange dot com.

If you want to make sure your game is considered for this year’s Showcase, make sure to have your email in by 11:59 PM Pacific on June 5. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as possible!

What else do I need to know about the Evo Indie Showcase?

If you’re thinking of applying, you’ll probably want to know these facts:

  • Participation in the Evo Indie Exhibition is free, and your exhibition staff will be provided “Exhibitor” badges that let you in and out.
  • Evo registration opens at 2 PM on Thursday, July 16, one day before the event begins, so you can begin setting up that Thursday. (You can still set up at any time Friday, with the understanding that the show begins at 8 AM on Friday morning, so you would be setting up amidst traffic.)
  • You will be provided a “dressed” table, chairs, and two standard Evo monitors (very low latency ASUS 24″). If you need more, we can’t guarantee that, but let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
  • You’re free to bring popup banners, signage for the table, or any other other peripherals you might like, but setting that up is on you! Also, you will be sharing the floorspace with other exhibitors, so we ask that you be respectful of their needs.
  • Show hours are 8 AM – 11 PM, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We don’t expect you to staff the area this entire time–your hours are up to you.

What if I’m not an indie game developer?

It’s never too late to get started! But if you want to help out, it’d be great if you could leave a comment suggesting a game that you’d like to see at Evo — or, better yet, hit up the developers themselves with a link to this post.

See you at Evo!

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R PC Release Possibly Revealed by Korean Game Rating Board

ggxxacpr-kyholyordersol

Guilty Gear fans looking to play the Arc System Works series on PC have traditionally been out of luck, as only two older versions of the game have been ported to the platform so far. That however is looking to change, as a listing for Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R recently popped up in Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee database.

While it’s not Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-,  this installment still has a sizable following with a good number of players still playing thanks to XX’s long tenure in the community. For many, the game is considered the pinnacle of the series.

The company behind this port is listed as H2 Interactive, the same South Korean company responsible for backing the Steam releases of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger and BlazBlue: Continuum Shift EXTEND. This most likely means that, if this pushes through, we’ll be seeing Guilty Gear on Valve’s service sometime in the future.

The scheduled 12-round bout will be contested at a catchweight of 144 pounds.
