NetherRealm Studios Now Live with Kombat Kast Episode 9 feat. the Briggs Family

The folks at NetherRealm Studios just went live with the ninth Kombat Kast–the last before the release of Mortal Kombat X. Today’s stream is set to cover the fighting styles and variants of the Briggs family as well as details surrounding the game’s online modes. As always, the crew will be slugging it out in some casual matches and may even be joined by special guests from around the studio. Since we are so close to the game’s release, anything could happen, so be sure to tune in.

You can watch the embedded stream below, or head over to Twitch to get in on the conversation. And if you can’t watch the stream, check back here after it ends for a summary of events.

Farmer Jax and Ninja Mime Johnny Cage Skins Making Their Way to Mortal Kombat X

Farmer Jax and Ninja Mime Johnny Cage Mortal Kombat X SMALL

With Mortal Kombat X Mobile fresh in the hands of iOS device owners–and on the way to those of us who prefer the Android platform–many may want a quick reminder of what, exactly, they’re fighting for. Aside from being able to take the fight online while away from their console of choice, the mobile version of Mortal Kombat X allows players to contribute to the game’s weekly faction war in a unique way.

Such contributions allow players to speed the process of unlocking various faction-based rewards–we’ve already seen special fatalities, but there is certainly much more to anticipate. During last week’s Kombat Kast, the team mentioned that players who reach their contribution cap in both the mobile and non-mobile version of the faction war each week will receive special rewards, though they didn’t go so far as to divulge what those bonus rewards will be.

They did, however, recently offer up a quick look at two skins that fans will be able to unlock through their mobile devices: Farmer Jax and Ninja Mime Johnny Cage, pictured above.

The series is no stranger to humor, as early iterations of the game came equipped with finishing moves like Friendships and Babalities, which made their way into 2011’s Mortal Kombat, but this is still much different than anything we’re used to seeing from the series. These skins may be NetherRealm Studios testing the water for whether or not this sort of unusual outfit will sit well with fans, or there could be a host of similar silly costumes waiting just on the other side of the faction war; we can’t currently know for sure.

In any case, if you’re busy tapping away at your screen in Mortal Kombat X’s mobile port, these are just a couple of the rewards you can expect to obtain for the console version when it launches on April 14.

Richar Abril-Derry Mathews title fight off again

WBA lightweight champion Richar Abril (19-3-1, 8 KOs) has pulled out of a defence against British challenger Derry Mathews (36-9-2, 7 KOs) for a second time, reportedly due to illness.
Abril was initially scheduled to defend the 135-pound belt against Mathews on March 6 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool but the Cuban withdrew with suspected dengue fever. The fight was rescheduled for April 18, at the same venue, but on Thursday Abril withdrew again.
According to promoter Frank Warren, the…

Mortal Kombat X Possibly Receiving Day One Balance Patch

mkx-johnnycagesonyablade-622-crop

Over the past few days, more and more Mortal Kombat X footage has been making its way online courtesy of folks who were able to get their hands on the fighter early. While this has had the obvious boon of giving competitive players the chance to craft some theories about the gameplay mechanics and cast members, this studying may be all for naught.

According to new details, the developers plan to release a day one patch that addresses a number of key factors, including online play, lingering bugs, and even the title’s overall balance. While we have not been able to confirm these details ourselves, God is a Geek has shared a screenshot of the ver.1.01 update details from PlayStation Network.

The patch reportedly weights in at just under 2 GB, leading us to believe there’s quite a bit still to be changed before the game officially releases.

Mortal Kombat X will arrive on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 14, with a summer launch planned for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Mortal Kombat X Mobile Now Available on iOS Devices

We’ve still got just under a week left until Mortal Kombat X finally hits shelves, but today, the folks at NetherRealm Studios did their part in making that wait a little more manageable by releasing Mortal Kombat X Mobile.

In last week’s Kombat Kast, the team revealed details surrounding this mobile pairing to the upcoming title. It’s a free-to-play card battler which plays out fights much like the game itself, with controls designed specifically for touch screens. In it, players can select their faction and, through playing the game, can unlock things for the non-mobile version such as alternate costumes. The examples that we got to see were Ninja Mime Johnny Cage and Farmer Jax, so there’s definitely a lighthearted feel to at least some aspect of this brutal slug fest.

The mobile version of the title is available on iOS devices right now, but has not yet made its way to the Google Play store. Since the trailer, which you’ll find below, advertises availability on Android devices, we can only assume that the delay before it comes to the second platform will be brief.

Modder Adds Shenmue Characters to Dead or Alive 5 Last Round

Sega AM2’s Shenmue has long been regarded as one of the best video games of all time, spawning a sequel and a dedicated following who continue to pine for another installment in the open-world series. With their emphasis on precise combat, both titles found their fair share of crossover appeal with fans of the studio’s Virtua Fighter franchise, and now two of Shenmue’s most prominent characters have found their way to another 3D fighter.

Thanks to the efforts of modder Esppiral, main protagonist Ryo Hazuki and his father’s murderer Lan Di can be added to the PC version of Dead or Alive 5 Last Round as playable characters. At this point in time they merely reskin Jacky Bryant and Akira Yuki’s original models, meaning they don’t posses unique fighting styles, though that may expand as the modding community learns more about the game.

We’ve included a handful of screenshots of the Shenmue duo in Last Round below; the necessary files to spice up your own copy can be found in the original Reddit post.

Summer Jam 9 Dates Pushed Back One Week

Summer_Jam_9_622_crop

For those looking forward to this year’s installment of Summer Jam, Big E Gaming’s Eric Small recently announced that the event will be delayed by a week. While it was originally scheduled for August 21-23, confusion with the hotel about the dates have forced the organizers to move it to August 28-30.

Summer Jam 9’s venue, fortunately, remains the same–the event will still take place at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Center in Essington, Pennsylvania.

For anyone interested in attending, you can pre-register now and take advantage of the lower, early bird rate, which will be available until next Monday, April 13. Additionally, the Clarion Hotel is offering a discounted rate for rooms for those who are going.

More details on the event can be found through the official website.
