John Choi Addresses NorCal Regionals 2015 Issues, Offers Kazunoko Trip to SoCal Regionals 2015

ncr-2015-logo-black-622-crop

While the folks behind NorCal Regionals 2015 put on a super fun event this past weekend (I was actually in attendance!), a couple of issues reared their ugly heads over the last few days that warranted official word from the organizers.

Apart from a slightly overblown conversation with east coast competitor Bryant “PIE|Smug” Huggins, the most egregious was the accidental usage of an older Ultra Street Fighter IV build during the later stages of the tournament, forcing four specific top sixteen matches to be replayed with the correct update in place.

Co-organizer John Choi has stepped forward to address these problems in an official letter to the community, which you’ll find in its entirety below.

First of all, I would like to thank all the wonderful staff, sponsors, players, and everyone that attended or tuned in to NCR. The event was a huge success in terms of numbers and growth and I want to extend a personal thank you to all the people that come together year after year to share passion for the scene.

We have seen our fair share of hiccups along the way as the event gets bigger and goes through growing pains and this year was no exception.

NCR is organized by several individuals; the primary two being myself and Terry aka Kineda. Our roles are divided as he manages the entire online process, while I manage the back-end production including systems and staffing. We both share responsibility in many other facets of the tournament, but the below two decisions were specifically mine and not his. I want to make this clear as many people see Terry as the face of NCR, and are quick to point the finger at him for the decisions made, when this is not the case.

1. Smug and others being allowed to join a Saturday pool.

NCR has traditionally run half the pools on Friday and half on Saturday for SFIV singles. Over the years due to work, school, or other obligations, many players are unable to attend on Friday, and often request to be entered into a Saturday pool. Vice versa, some request a Friday pool if they have obligations that prohibit them from attending on Saturday. We try our best to accommodate as many people as possible given that we have enough notice to do so.

In addition, we also offer last minute on-site registration on Friday morning for people that are unable to plan their schedule ahead of time. To accommodate on-site registrations, we create “bye” slots in every SFIV tournament pool after online registration closes. These “bye” slots are then filled by players who register on-site, avoiding the need to shift any of the players in the brackets who have pre-registered online.

Friday morning around 10AM while on-site registration was open, I was made aware via Twitter of Smug’s intent to join the NCR tournament. Since he is flying in from east coast, he requested to be placed into a Saturday pool, which I agreed to since he wouldn’t be able to attend the tournament on Friday. This is no different than an unknown player walking into the venue on Friday morning and requesting a Saturday pool, because he/she needed to work on Friday afternoon or evening.

Any player was able to register up to two hours before the start of the SFIV tournament which began at 4PM. Since Smug notified me many hours prior to the deadline, adding him into the Saturday tournament bracket was not an issue. In no way did Smug ever ‘bypass’ a round of the tournament or be allowed to choose the pool he played in. He was placed into a “bye” spot, just like any other player who registered on-site. Smug also did not pay extra for this request, he paid the same on-site fee as any other player.

This has been normal practice, and I confirmed with a Capcom representative that no rules were broken. We want to make NCR an enjoyable experience for everyone and try to accommodate all players, but realize this process may cause confusion and as a result, it will be re-evaluated next year.

2. The wrong version being used for 4 matches of USFIV finals.

On stage throughout the weekend, we used one system that had USFIV version 1.04. During a match of Smash finals on Sunday, the player that owned the system needed to leave and took the system home. Typically, I would load up the replacement system, but since Smash finals was still taking place, I grabbed another system that I knew had 1.04 and left it by the stage and went on to attend other matters. I personally checked every system prior to the start of NCR to ensure that all updates have been properly made.

Note that USFIV can be acquired in a variety of ways. This replacement console was digitally upgraded to 1.04, which keeps the update on the internal hard drive. When a user puts in a game disc however, the Xbox reads the data off the disc rather than looking through the hard drive. When the Smash finals concluded, the team on stage swapped out to the Xbox I dropped off and put in an USFIV disc which made the Xbox default to original disc version 1.00, instead of 1.04 from the hard drive.

Unfortunately this was not noticed by our team nor the players that played the 4 matches on it. Soon as this was discovered, a discussion took place with a Capcom representative since this game is sanctioned by the rules of the Capcom Pro Tour. The rep made a decision that those 4 matches cannot count and must be replayed on the proper version being used throughout the entire tour. It was a difficult decision by the Capcom team, but I agree with it completely.

It is the tournament organizer’s duty to ensure the proper version is being used and I take full responsibility for this mistake. I dropped off the system knowing it had 1.04, but should have verified 1.04 was properly loaded up. This was a very difficult lesson learned and I encourage all other organizers to learn from my devastating mistake and to always check the version that is loaded up, even if you know the system has the latest version. I am truly sorry for this mistake as it has impacted the integrity of NCR and the tour.

8 players were deeply affected from this. The mental and emotional pressure of having to replay the matches again was completely unfair to them. One player specifically affected by this mistake was Kazunoko, as the result of his match was changed. As an apology, I would like to personally offer him a paid trip to SCR or another US premier event. I know this does not rectify the mistake, but it would give him the opportunity he deserves at another premier event.

Sincerely,
John

We have also reached out to Capcom for word on whether or not this mix-up will affect NorCal Regionals status on future Capcom Pro Tour circuits, and will update this article as soon as we hear back.

(Disclosure: NorCal Regionals co-organizer Terry “Kineda” Ng works for Shoryuken.)

Everything from character reveals to exhibition matches to bits and pieces of the title’s extensive story mode have tantalized fans of the series. With just over a week left until we can finally pop our own copies of the game into consoles and start the slug fest, the game’s official launch trailer has finally landed.

skullgirls-encore-beowulf-hype-622-crop

For those planning on picking up the PlayStation 4 version of Skullgirls: Encore, here’s some interesting news for you: a recent Tweet from senior animator Jonathan “Persona” Kim mentioned that the PlayStation 4 version of the game will support cross-play with the PlayStation 3 version.

This announcement means that players on the PlayStation 4 version will automatically have a larger pool of players to play against in the game’s excellent online mode mode by allowing them to face off against players on PlayStation 3.

In addition to this, the tweet also mentioned that the patch including the game’s new character, Beowulf, has already been submitted to Sony for testing. If all goes well, we should see the him available for download in a few weeks’ time.

Kinetiquettes’ Oni Diorama Now Up for Pre-Order

Some time back, we reported on Kinetiquettes’ impressive 1:6 scale Evil Ryu diorama. In that article, we mentioned that it was part of a two-part set and would connect to another diorama featuring Oni. Well, for those waiting for the Oni diorama, the wait is almost over as Kinetiquettes has opened pre-orders for it.

As with the Evil Ryu diorama that this connects to, this Oni diorama shows the character literally ripping the tiles of the roof from the power of the move he’s about to unleash. This time, Oni is charging forward with a flaming hand for what seems to be his Rakan Dantojin, demon slash.

The Oni diorama is currently available for pre-order for $378. Those interested can head on over to Kinetiquettes’ pre-order page. In the meantime, check out these shots of the diorama in the gallery below.

Latest Killer Instinct Textual Stream Serves Up Piping Hot Info Surrounding Cinder and Ranked Leagues

Cinder Concept Art SMALL
The most recent Killer Instinct textual stream is hot off the presses and loaded with information on Leagues, as well as the upcoming character, Cinder.

Viewers who caught a brief glimpse of the fiery fighter at the end of Hisako’s launch trailer last week likely noticed that he is no longer simply a “dude on fire” as Microsoft Studios representative Ishmae1 notes. While he did lose the pure, simple form that fans used to know, he has gained much that makes him truly stand out as a character beyond something akin to a victim of Dhalsim’s Yoga Fire in the early days of Street Fighter II.

But those who do prefer the clean lines of Cinder’s classic look will find peace in the fact that the team is currently developing a version of that skin for use, which you can see below.
Cinder Classic Skin Work in Progress
A new look demands a new back story, and Cinder has received that as well. Ben “Cinder” Ferris served a wildly successful term in the military which he followed with a career in the exciting and dangerous world of paramilitary contracting. His skills landed him in good standing with his bank account, but bad standing with plenty of important people. When tasked with stealing information regarding Ultratech’s “Project Cinder,” Ferris uncovered mind-boggling secrets including signs that pointed to the extraterrestrial nature of the information that he sought.

Sadly, the Killer Instinct team still isn’t ready to divulge the nature of Cinder’s move set, as he is still very much a work in progress.

Additionally, fans of Killer Instinct’s online ranked leagues will be pleased to learn that a few changes have been implemented:

  • We have adjusted the score system to make the climb from Bronze to Killer more challenging (requires better win/loss ratio).
  • In Killer vs Killer matches, we have added a ‘catch-up’ mechanic to the scoring system, which will give you more points when defeating a player higher up in the Killer ladder than you.  After winning a match, just watch your points go up to see if you crushed someone higher than you. The base is still +50, but if it was someone really ahead of you, you could earn up to 1,000 points! Top guys, you are officially on notice, everyone is now gunning for you- hunting the top Killers just got very profitable!
  • We also want to acknowledge the many requests for an option to Rank Down.  We hear you loud and clear, this is something that we are looking into for the future along with other changes to help make your experiences within the different Tiers better.

As with their previous textual streams, the team ends this segment with a lengthy Q&A. To check out the Q&A, as well as to learn even more about the upcoming fiery fighter, head over to the official Killer Instinct forums to take a look at the original post.
