With Mortal Kombat X slated to release on every major platform next year, publisher Warner Bros. is going full bore in their promotion of the vicious fighter. In addition to the previously announced graphic novel series from DC Comics, the studio’s new Blue Ribbon Content production wing is currently developing a live-action series that will tie into the upcoming title.
Very few details have yet to be released for this project, but it appears as if it will follow Mortal Kombat X’s multi-generational theme, with characters both new and old making appearances throughout the series.
The long-running franchise received a similar live-action treatment in Mortal Kombat: Legacy, which saw two seasons of episodes premiere online from 2011 to 2013. It is currently unknown if Blue Ribbon’s series will be connected in any way.
Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on April 14.
Back in July, we reported that Lab Zero Games was looking for a way to add support for PlayStation 3 controllers in the upcoming PlayStation 4 version of Skullgirls Encore. While little was discussed after that initial announcement, it looks like they’ve made some good progress on this issue over the past few months. According to a recent video from lead developer Mike Zaimont, they have implemented a custom USB driver in the current developer builds of the indie fighter that adds the necessary functionality.
According to CEO Peter Bartholow, the driver, which was developed for free by programmer John “Cowboy” Bellomy from Naughty Dog in his free time, allows any controller that identifies itself as a “generic USB gamepad or joystick” to work with the game. This should cover the various arcade sticks Mad Catz has released for the console as well as some other brands and custom PCB options, such as Godlike Controls’ Cthulhu line of boards that are used in many custom built arcade sticks.
However, Bartholow clarified that devices that identify themselves as a DualShock 3 will not work with the driver, which means things like Akishop’s PS360+ board and the InPin PS2 to PS3 adapter will not be supported.
Bartholow also mentioned that PlayStation 4-specific functions, such as the Home and Share buttons, will need a DualShock 4 to be utilized.
Public testing of the USB driver will begin this weekend at Ultimate Gaming Center’s charity event in Panorama City, California, and continue on into Sony’s PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas this December. The developers encourage everyone to make the trip out to these events to try out their sticks and provide feedback. If all goes well, the driver should be in place when Skullgirls Encore launches on the PlayStation 4 next year.
Additionally, Lab Zero will be graciously allowing other developers to use their driver for free, with the only condition being that they share any work done on the driver with the Skullgirls developers.
With this work in place, fans will not have to shell out another chunk of money for a stick upgrade in order to play the new release, a barrier to entry that keeps many from playing other such releases.
While Halloween is usually a time for watching scary movies, gorging on way too much candy, and perhaps getting up to a little mischief, I’m sure there are some folks out there who opt to shut off their lights (discouraging would-be trick or treaters in the process) and play fighting games instead. Fortunately, PlayStation Network has provided a sale on a rather spooky fighting game series that should help you make sure your training is as holiday-appropriate as possible.
Darkstalkers Resurrection is available for only $7.49, or $5.24 if you happen to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber.
Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios, Resurrection includes remastered versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3, complete with online play, training mode, and everything else we’ve come to expect from modern fighting game releases.
If you’ve yet to grab Darkstalkers Resurrection, now is the perfect opportunity to do so. But don’t delay, because it will only be available at these discounted prices until October 27.
Less spooky offerings include Soulcalibur II HD Online and the mobile version of Tekken 6, more details for which you’ll find here.

Scott Quigg (29-0-2, 22 KOs) will defend his WBA super-bantamweight title against Japan’s Hidenori Otake (22-1-3, 9 KOs) on the undercard of the rematch between Nathan Cleverly and Toney Bellew at the sold-out Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 22.
His opponent is a Japanese champion ranked third in the IBF list and fighting outside his home country for the first time in his career.
“I can’t wait to defend my world title in Liverpool on November 22 on a huge night for British boxing,”…
A few weeks ago, the r/Kappa subreddit held a successful fundraiser to send Japanese El Fuerte player Pepeday, from the Fukuoka Gamers Club, to The Fall Classic 2014. Now, the communty has banded together once again, raising money to send him to another Capcom Pro Tour qualifier–DreamHack Winter 2014.
After his performance in the United States, where he tied for fifth in The Fall Classic’s Ultra Street Fighter IV tournament and beat Snake Eyez in a first-to-ten exhibition, Pepeday quickly found his way onto the shortlist of players who the subreddit was looking to send to the Europe.
While the drive has a few days left, they have already made almost twice as much as their stated goal of $1,590. That said, anyone interested can still head over and donate to the drive.
DreamHack Winter 2014 will take place November 27-30 in Jönköping, Sweden, with the Capcom Pro Tour event itself scheduled for November 29. As a premier event, the first-place finisher will earn automatic entry into the Capcom Cup finals in December.
I think it’s safe to say that NetherRealm Studios’ Ed Boon has surpassed Yoshinori Ono of Capcom as the most active development teaser in the fighting game genre. Unlike Ono, however, Boon’s hints usually lead to something.
His most recent came yesterday afternoon, when he tweeted out a picture taken during a Mortal Kombat X motion capture session. While there isn’t much to see here for those unfamiliar with the franchise, fans will instantly recognize the pose being struck by the actor on the left as very Kenshi-esque in appearance.
A sightless swordsman originally introduced in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Kenshi’s prime method of combat (apart from his weapon, of course) is his masterful use of telekinetic abilities.
You’ll find the image in question, which apparently depicts the fighters mid-fatality, below.
While it’s no secret that Persona 4 Arena had some issues in traveling to Europe a few years back, the sequel will not be as hampered as its predecessor.
Sega has announced that the popular Arc System Works fighter will be making its way to the continent on November 21. Though it’s a full two months since the title arrived in North America, this span of time is a far cry from the near-year wait European fans had to endure with the first installment.
Apart from brand new gameplay mechanics, like the Shadow-type versions available to almost every character, Ultimax features a handful of brand new fighters from Persona titles of the past.
If you plan on picking this title up, keep in mind that Rice-Digital is offering a special Fan Edition through their online shop, which includes an exclusive t-shirt.
According to this week’s Famitsu, Tecmo Koei and Team NINJA are set to launch Dead or Alive 5 Last Round in Japan on February 19.
This latest revision of their long-running fighting game series will be available newer platforms PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well as their older counterparts PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Besides adding stages from previous Dead or Alive installments, Last Round will feature at least two additional fighters, one in particular a female newcomer to the franchise.
Famitsu also revealed that Last Round is scheduled to receive a free-to-play version on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, similar to Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate Core Fighters from the previous generation. Players with different versions will still be able to battle each other online.
News has yet to be shared regarding releases in other regions, so stay tuned for more information.

While a number of custom items were revealed by the official Tekken 7 hub site during the upcoming title’s location tests last month, Bandai Namco Games shared more screenshots during their recent business meetings that highlight a number of additional outfit pieces.
These screenshots, which come courtesy of Gamer and Avoiding the Puddle, feature some interesting alternate looks for Xiaoyu, Asuka, Leo, and Dragunov, four returning fighters that will be joined by new additions Katarina and Claudio when the game launches in arcades next year.
Feel free to check out the images below and let us know what you think.
Over the weekend, Bandai Namco Games conducted a handful of business meetings to discuss their slate of upcoming games, during which they announced that Tekken 7 will arrive in arcades in February of next year.
This news comes a little over two weeks since the company held high-profile location tests at a pair of venues in Japan, highlighting the title’s gameplay mechanics, new characters, and arcade netplay.
According to Avoiding the Puddle, these details were shared in catalogs that cater to arcade operators, with specifications on cabinets such as pricing, size, and more. This information quickly appeared on Japanese resource Arcade Game Portal, where the date was originally spotted.
Along with the debut of fighters Katarina and Claudio, Tekken 7 includes two new features: Rage Arts, powerful special moves that become available once a character’s health dips below a certain threshold, and Power Crushes, which power through the opponent’s offense without being interrupted.
With this new release window nearing rapidly, we’re sure to hear more details on the upcoming game throughout the coming months, so stay tuned.
