Star Wars: The Old Republic players with Early Access privileges for this week’s Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion will want to keep an eye on the official site as it comes of maintenance tomorrow, Tuesday, October 20th.

Bioware has announced that early access for the Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion, Knights of the Fallen Empire, is scheduled to kick off today. KotFE marks a return to storytelling and will come to players courtesy of nine chapters, new companions and new enemies. Early Access is for active subscribers between July and early October. To celebrate, the team has released a new trailer called "Alliance".

Of particular note, a new Critical Path arc will guide players along the most important story and class quests on each planet and will be represented by a special color (purple) for both the map icon and in the quest tracker.

During yesterday’s Star Wars: The Old Republic live stream of Knights of the Fallen Empire, Bioware’s Eric Musco revealed that planets will be level scaled. Players going to low- or lower-level planets will have their levels scaled to match. The forums are aflame with players letting developers know in no uncertain terms (overall) that this is an unwanted feature.

It may seem at odds to use the words "epic" and "accessible" in the same sentence, but Bioware and EA’s upcoming expansion to Star Wars: The Old Republic seeks to embody both of those terms in equal measure. If the entirety of Knights of the Fallen Empire (KotFE) is matched by the brief playthrough that I was privy to at an offsite preview yesterday, the expansion is going to pack quite a bit of a punch, while still being inviting to newer players.

In approximately a month’s time, subscribers to Star Wars: the Old Republic will be playing the new expansion and no doubt blazing a trail through the nine chapters of the new story that will be released at launch. Whether you prefer to gobble it up in one sitting or take your time and savor, there’s plenty of new BioWare-flavored story to enjoy. However, let’s take a look at what will happen if you’re not a subscriber.

Fans of Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will be happy to hear that Drew Karpyshyn has returned to the fold after finishing his trilogy of novels. According to his blog, Karpyshyn will be working on Star Wars: The Old Republic, a clear sign that Bioware is committed to storytelling with the Knights of the Fallen Empire.

The Star Wars: The Old Republic team has put out a brief new video diary that takes on the subject of story and writing for the Knights of the Fallen Empire expansion. From the first word about KotFE, Bioware has promised a return to story and from the sound of things, they will be delivering when the expansion is launched later this year.
