On August 22nd, Overwatch received a new animated short and a brand-new map. Set in Busan, Korea — home to the game’s esports rep D.VA — the map touches on Korea’s traditional and futuristic aspects alike.
Much like the arcade of the Hanamura map, Busan also features a karaoke parlor, arcade, and esports café. In this section of the map are multiple games, including a DDR-esque machine — and the universe’s signature fighting game Fighters of the Storm returns to appear here, as it did in Hanamura.
So far, the game has two iterations: Fighters of the Storm 1 and 2. These games feature characters from throughout Blizzard’s various IPs, such as Garosh Hellscream from World of Warcraft, Tychus Findlay from Starcraft, and Tyrael from Diablo. The game’s title is in reference to Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm MOBA, which likewise features an array of characters from multiple Blizzard titles.
The fighting game isn’t playable within Overwatch, unfortunately — and despite how much interest there would be in a real playable fighter featuring Blizzard characters, there is so far no indication this will actually happen. With the second appearance of the game in Busan’s esports-centric map, however, we can still dream…

You may remember that the ESRB rating for SoulCalibur VI accidentally confirmed the existence of Astaroth and Seong Mi-Na long before they were announced. Among the weapons listed in its rating was the “pistol”, which either would refer to a new character or, more probably, the Soul series’ original antagonist: Cervantes de Leon.
Cervantes is such an iconic foe (and unique moveset) that it would be foolish not to include him. But, just in case there was any doubt…
… Bandai Namco’s press conference with IGN showed a Create-A-Soul character dual wielding a very familiar style of blades. Whether this means Cervantes will be announced soon as part of the main roster, or in the Season Pass, remains to be seen. Sadly, there’s not too much to go off of in the above video, as the CAS character was controlled by an AI. His bA auto-GI and 6B have returned in some form, and his old 1B from SCV (6A+B in SCII) is now the second hit of his 4B string. Outside of that, no new moves were shown for his toolkit.
Perhaps that’ll change soon.

Following a spectacular Evo 2018, the Injustice 2 Pro Series journeys back into cyberspace, as 46 heroes and villains from the EU region gathered to battle this past weekend in the second of three online events in an effort to rack up those leaderboard points to be in the IPS Finals in October. With the EU region scoring only one of the four Premiere events in Vienallity, points were even more precious for them — as traveling to the United States, where the lion’s share of points are located, can be very costly. There was also the majority of a $1,000 prize pool at stake for the top 8 as well. Players from Bahrain, Russia, Poland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, the Ukraine, Austria, and the Netherlands, all converged to battle for supremacy, so there were sure to be some intense matches.

The next stop for the 2018 IPS is the online event for North America East, which takes place September 9th-11th. Registration is currently live at smash.gg. Eligible regions include: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Labrador. Matches will kick off at 1:00 PM ET. The event will be streamed on twitch.tv/netherrealm, the InjusticeGame YouTube Channel, and the InjusticeGame Facebook page.
After that, it’s the final Premiere event, Southern California Regionals, taking place from September 14th-16th — with the customary pot bonus of $10,000 up for grabs. The Last Chance Qualifier will also be held at East Coast Throwdown, in Fairfield, New Jersey, from October 20th-21st. The Liga Latina and Injustice 2 Elite Circuit for Canada, are also raging on, with details on a European Program still yet to be divulged.

While the reveal of Lei Fang and Hitomi for Dead or Alive 6 was spoiled a bit early, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything left for the game’s fans at Gamescom 2018. The event is also a chance for Team NINJA to show off some live gameplay of both characters.
During IGN Live’s stream at Gamescom 2018, Dead or Alive 6 producer Yohei Shimbori got the chance to show off both characters and the new “Forbidden Fortune” stage. As part of this, Shimbori offered some interesting tidbits about the reveal. For one, while Hitomi was planned to be revealed at Gamescom due to being half-German, Lei Fang was actually meant to be revealed earlier together with her rival, Jann Lee. However, she wasn’t ready at the time, so her revealed was moved back to Gamescom.
Regarding why both characters were chosen for the game, Shimbori mentions that both had a lot of fans who’re waiting for them to be revealed, and that they were considered a good fit for Dead or Alive 6.
Additionally, he points out their new default costumes; however, he does confirm that they will still have their classic costumes in the game.
Dead or Alive 6 is set to be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2019.

The months surrounding a Super Smash Bros. release are historically loud — fighting game players, Nintendo fans, and even followers of individual characters roar together in a chorus of anticipation. Yesterday, the fanfare surrounding Super Smash Bros. Ultimate grew a little bit louder, as new footage popped up on Nintendo’s social media.
First up, a tense 1v1 between King K. Rool and the (now returning) Snake:
Secondly, a hectic 2v2 between the protagonists of Fire Emblem: Awakening and the villains of Metroid:
Despite featuring item spawns for dramatic flair, these videos showcase how exciting Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be in a competitive setting. Harboring both energy and polish, as well as a ludicrous number of characters, Smash’s future has never looked brighter.
