Registration is open for SoCal Regionals 2018, coming to Ontario, CA on September 14-16

SoCal’s biggest fighting game bash is on its way — get ready!

SoCal’s best and those that wish to challenge them will be gathering once again — this time in Ontario, California — for SoCal Regionals 2018, being held on September 14-16!

SoCal Regionals 2018 is a Capcom Pro Tour Premier event, and part of the Tekken World Tour as well as the Injustice 2 Pro Series! It’s also the “Dramatic Battle” stop on the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series, featuring Street Fighter Alpha 3. Registration is open now at smash.gg. So, what else is on the fight card this year…? Tournaments will be held in the following titles:

See full color sets for all nine unannounced BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle DLC characters

The leaks appear to just keep on springing for the remaining nine upcoming DLC characters for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. It seems that the recent version 1.11 patch for PlayStation 4 may have also brought with it some new data for the currently-unannounced fighters — as now each of their 16 colors, including the three paid DLC palettes, has been revealed.

Though we’ve already seen Lobby Avatars and heard English voice clips for most of them, this latest development now fully cements that the final characters — that will be released in Cross Character Packs 4-6,  following the conclusion of Evo 2018 — are: BlazBlue’s Izayoi, Nine The Phantom, and Mai Natsume, Persona 4 Arena’s Mitsuru Kirjo, Akihiko Sanada, and Labrys, and Under Night In-Birth’s Yuzuriha Sougetsu, Merkava, and Mika Returna. It should also be noted that attempting to play as any of these fighters has been said to make the game crash — including Mika, whom footage was captured of previously, so they’re not ready just yet. Additionally, no additional data has been found for the rumored Senran Kagura duo of Yumi and Asuka, potentially suggesting that they’ve been scrapped or that ASW is being extremely coy. Are you enjoying Fighting EX Layer? We are too! And as a member of the FGC, you probably like to test stuff out in training mode. FEXL has some robust recording features, but there’s one that — in its current form, at least — only works on paper. That’s the “After Guard” setting. Here’s a quick demonstration:

Currently, “After Guard” seems to act sooner then a human would be allowed to, bypassing block-stun and punishing things that wouldn’t normally be possible. Consider this a friendly PSA so that you don’t mistakenly assume something is unsafe that actually isn’t.

Ryu appears as a new powered-up boss in Street Fighter V’s Extra Battle mode as “A True Martial Artist”

A new Extra Battle boss that’s really a force to be reckoned with.

In addition to this week offering us the last piece of Ryu’s Arthur Crossover Costume (and the last chance to get the BGM to go with it) in Street Fighter V‘s Extra Battle mode, a new boss also has shown up: now it’s Ryu’s turn to smash your Fight Money stash as “A True Martial Artist” — or, as he’s labeled in-match, THE MASTER.

Wii Fit Trainer’s “Sashimi Wiggle” lets her pull off epic dashes in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

In their latest tutorial video, the Beefy Smash Doods discuss what is perhaps the most interesting tech found in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U: an ability possessed solely by Wii Fit Trainer that has been named Sashimi Wiggling. This technique exploits Wii Fit Trainer’s unique crawl mechanic by combining it with the momentum gained during a turnaround following a run. By going into a crawl immediately after a turnaround, Trainer is able to execute dashes of great proportions and great speeds that are impossible to achieve by any other means.

Using the Sashimi Wiggle, these dashes can also be canceled at certain lengths and attacks can even be executed mid-dash, but as C5 of Beefy Smash Doods explains, this technique requires very meticulous timing and can only be executed consistently when dashing right and turning left.

If this explanation just makes the Sashimi Wiggle seem more confusing, check out the Beefy Smash Doods’ video on it below. Whether you are able to comprehend how it’s done or not, to see a character do such an incredible dash in an Super Smash Bros. game is quite baffling. Who knows if this tech will carry over into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but if it does, Wii Fit Trainer players can use this tutorial to slide right by the competition.

2GG brings us epic highlights from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at the Hyrule Saga

Ties, T-posing and taunting abound in this highlight footage of the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournaments from the recently-passed 2GG Hyrule Saga. Set in Long Beach, California, The Legend of Zelda-themed major saw Smash 4 heavyweights such as MKLeo, Elegant, Ally, and Mr. R match blades to determine who was the most fearsome warrior in the kingdom of the Triforce.

Though many shenanigans did transpire, all players appeared to have brought their A-game, which is to be expected of an event hosted by 2GG. Blade Strangers release date set for August 28th, can be pre-ordered via Amazon

If you’ve been patiently waiting for Nicalis to reveal a release date for their new crossover fighter Blade Strangers, your time has come:

Featuring characters from Code of Princess, Shovel Knight, Gunvolt Azure Striker, Binding of Isaac, and more, Blade Strangers is the second fighting game entry from developer Studio Saizensen. The game can be preordered here from Amazon for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Curiously, Amazon has a release date of September 28th, but with Nicalis’s new announcement, this will likely be updated soon.

The ELEAGUE Street Fighter V Celebrity Showdown returns on June 29, featuring Shaq, Jimmy Rollins, Baron Davis, & Natalie Eva Marie

Four celebrities will fight it out for charity tomorrow at ELEAGUE.

Now that the four main Groups for the ELEAGUE 2018 Street Fighter V Invitational have completed their elimination rounds and seeded the Playoffs bracket, we get a different kind of fight coming our way this weekend as a respite — this Friday, it’s time for the Celebrity Showdown!

Turner and IMG’s second annual Celebrity Showdown will feature basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, World Series Champion Jimmy Rollins, 13-year NBA veteran Baron Davis, and former professional wrestler Natalie Eva Marie in a Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition charity tournament, televised on TBS. These competitors are fighting to raise money for the charities of their choice — with O’Neal supporting the Odessa Chambliss Quality of Life Fund, Rollins playing for The Jimmy Rollins Family Foundation, Davis on behalf of The Drew League, and Marie for A21.

During last year’s Showdown, Shaq pulled off a “controversial” upset win against Marie, with a little help from Tasty Steve. How will the rematch play out? Analysts Tasty Steve, Zhi Liang Chew, Sajam, and Rip will serve as game coaches for the celebrities, and Josh Gray will host.

The single-elimination tournament consists of two first-round matches and a winner’s match, for three matches total. The champion earns the majority of the prize money for their chosen charity — but all other participants receivie a portion for their charities, too.
