Get to know Mayor Cody ahead of his arrival in this Street Fighter V introduction video

In the latest video in the Street Fighter V: Character Introduction Series, Capcom officially invites you to spend some time with Mayor Cody Travers. The brief-yet-informative video gives an insightful rundown on the new moves and strategies that we’ve seen from the new Cody in his gameplay trailer and during the WinnerStaysOn Cody Showcase.

Cody’s evolution into an upstanding citizen does seem to come with some noticeable changes to his moveset, most notably the absence of his dubiously-named Criminal Upper special attack. However, as the video begins to break down the details of his two V-Triggers, you’ll see that he is still not above using knives and pipes to get the job done.

Despite a few obvious updates to the bored, brawling inmate we all know grew to know and love, Cody’s character introduction video makes him look like an exciting new addition to the Street Fighter V roster. You’ll be able to judge for yourself when he is released later today!

Locke Cole steals the show in his Dissidia Final Fantasy NT launch trailer

Final Fantasy VI‘s swashbuckling treasure hunter Locke Cole has just been released for Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. It wasn’t long ago that he was revealed to be the 2nd of six DLC characters planned, with the first being Final Fantasy XII‘s bureaucratic boss, Vayne Carudas Solidor.

According to the hints dropped by Square Enix regarding the identities of the upcoming fighters, the next reveal will be of a female from the “newer half” of the Final Fantasy franchise. While that certain doesn’t narrow things down too much, the next character should arrive in around two months, so fans have about that long to speculate.

Season pass holders can put Locke’s “treasure hunting” abilities to good use in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT today — and everyone can check out his nostalgia-filled launch trailer below.

Noel brings out her Azure Revolvers in this stylish BlazBlue: Central Fiction combo video

Even though the focus has shifted mostly to BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, the “mainline” BlazBlue title still gets attention from players. Take, for example, Monarch’s excellent BlazBlue: Central Fiction combo videos.

In today’s video, Monarch shows off some damaging combos with BlazBlue’s Noel, but it feels like the overall focus is on combos that look good — There’s many side-switching ones (including a really cool Tager-specific one), and a Burst-safe combo against Valkenhayn. By spending 50 meter on a Rapid Cancel, Noel can either continue the attack sequence or block if the opponent Bursted, but either way, the combo doesn’t stop. He also shows off an impressive pressure sequence on Relius.

ComboCon organizer HD Mex talks about how to grow a community with FGC Philosophy

“One of the biggest outlets for people in the veteran community is video gaming.”

The story of ComboCon is a fascinating one — it’s a FGC event that found a way to combine veteran charity and video games into a surprisingly large fighting game tournament. And it debuted in a place where there wasn’t much of an FGC at all: St. Johns, Michigan.

Boasting over 300 entrants, hdmexiqtioner knows what it’s like to create a scene from nothing — and the sudden challenges a surprise success can bring. Check out the interview above on the latest “FGC Philosophy” episode to hear about ComboCon’s roots and how you can grow your own scene.

Mikado Arcade’s Street Fighter Carnival 11 continues with Fighting Layer, BlazBlue: Central Fiction

Street Fighter Carnival 11 is Mikado Arcade’s currently-ongoing, month-long, multi-game tournament series for a wide variety of classic (and sometimes, obscure) arcade titles. This series is well under way, so start from the beginning if you want to catch up!

Typically, Mikado Arcade tries to keep it as old-school as possible, but newer title will occasionally find their way into SFC’s frame. Such is the case with the first of today’s tournaments, Arc System Works’ BlazBlue: Central Fiction.

Our next VOD is for their Fighting Layer tournament. ARIKA’s Fighting EX Layer drops in about a week and ARIKA, if you’re listening, there’s still time to add Capriccio and Exodus. You can do it.

Fighting Layer is a fantastic game but, as you can see from the side-switch grabs and combo-escape mechanic, it is certainly its own beast. For the curious, you can read more about Fighting Layer‘s gameplay over on the SRK Wiki.

You can follow the action of SFC11 by subscribing to Mikado’s official YouTube channel. For the night owls in the US, you can even try to catch them when they livestream.

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle roundup: DLC character tech — Deadly Yang, Carmine, Aegis, and Hakumen combos

As seven new characters just arrived in BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, players are once again busy developing new tech as fervently as Elon Musk. Get ready to see new one-touch-death combos, powerful set ups, and pressure that won’t let the opponent get out easily. We’re taking a closer look at Yang, Carmine, Aegis, and Hakumen.

Obviously, comboing your opponent into the Astral Heat is a worthy goal to strive for, so if you need to a few pointers, check out the compilation above for Aegis, Vatista, Carmine, Naoto, Hakumen, Jubei, and Yang footage.

Kalibur optimized the Aegist Astral Heat combo by starting from even less bars.

Here’s a fairly straightforward corner combo with Aegis that will keep the opponent on their toes with a cannon attack once they get up.

Kalibur is also finding out some useful Aegis option selects; visit his Twitter for more Aegis and Es tech.

Looks like Jin isn’t the only one with really high solo damage. Keep in mind though that Carmine spends some health on certain attacks.

Here’s a pretty terrifying set up with Carmine that seems to cover defensive options quite well.

This deadly combo from Hakumen and Tager should finish off most characters in the game.

Uri put together this aesthetically pleasing Yang and Hakumen combo.

At last, Hakumen can keep those pesky command throws off of his sanctimonious person.

Are you having flashbacks to other BlazBlue games yet? Hakumen shows he doesn’t need a partner as he kills his foes while in Resonance Blaze.

Here’s a straightforward combo that sets up a safe jump for Yang in the corner.

If you’re more of a lover than a fighter, also check out these unique interactions between BBTAG DLC characters.

Unboxing the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition

Shoryuken offers a hands-on look at what’s in the BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition package.

bbtag ce promo

The BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle Collector’s Edition has quite a few goodies in it, but is it worth your money? I decided to make an unboxing video to show you the contents up close to see for yourself!

A big box that showcases the colors of each franchise houses the Collector Edition items. Inside, the steel case is first. I’m a big fan of it; it has special art from the Japanese edition of the game. The colors on it are vivid and powerful, showcasing each protagonist: Ragna, Yu, Hyde, and Ruby. Obviously, it feels very solid; it’s a great way to house the disc.

You still get a regular retail box of the game with that fancy “Evo 2018 main lineup” sticker. It’s nice to have a regular box, though there’s no instruction booklet, so it feels a little redundant; and that feeling is furthered because the standard edition of the game comes with a mini soundtrack CD (seven tracks). However, the Collector’s Edition comes with a 15-track disc that has all of those tracks from the mini CD, and more. We can hear each version of Crossing Fate (just in case you haven’t heard enough of it yet), even the short version used in the opening. It’s good that the disc has the mix track of each RWBY character as that equals to multiple tracks from the show.

The acrylic “figures” are flat representations of each protagonist. To be honest, these are surprisingly nice. They stand securely on their flat stands. I get the feeling that multiple figures were out of Arc System Works’ budget (or maybe they could have you choose one, but more options still equal to higher operating costs). It’s nice to have each franchise represented.

Finally, the artbook is a bit of a letdown; not particularly because it’s relatively short (52 pages), but it’s mostly filled with standard “stock” character-select art of the base roster. It does have very cool sketches of the RWBY characters, showing how their attacks and poses were animated. I also love the section at the end that shows sketches of partner introductions.

All in all, it’s a good Collector’s Edition, even though CDs are a bit old-school now. I would maybe like to get a poster instead of the mini-CD that comes in the regular game box.

Thanks to Arc System Works for providing the Collector’s Edition to Shoryuken; you can get your own at the Arc System Works online shop. Check out our BBTAG video review as well!

Learn the nuance behind King’s Double Heel Hold in Tekken 7

King is Tekken 7‘s primary grappler, and as such, it makes sense that he possess the game’s only multi-part air throw. “Double Heel Hold”  has more than a few interesting mechanics and setups involved with it, and allows King to play a more diverse and difficult-to-predict game once he converts off juggles.

It also allows King to always threaten big damage from his resets even when his back is against the wall — a particularly devastating feature on stages with breakable walls.
