Dragon Ball FighterZ roundup: Quick Zeni, Android 16 Kill Mixup, Goku Blue breakdown, and more!

Another day, another chance to see how far Dragon Ball FighterZ’s engine can be pushed by the community. If the number of players in a community means a game’s tech will be that much better, then it seems DBFZ’s tech will go particularly far: After its debut on steam, DBFZ has become the most played fighting game of all time.

So let’s see what all these players have put together!:

UM Tyrant opens up today’s post with a beginner’s guide to learning Dragon Ball FighterZ — appopriate, as DBFZ is certainly introducing new players to the world of the FGC.

Looking to grab as much Zeni as possible without losing precious practice time? BornFree wants you to know that those ‘Quest’ pop ups are really not time consuming at all, and net you a smooth 25,000 Zeni.

Moving into individual character tech, let’s check out Hit. Hit lacks a traditional low 2A, which you would think would be a crippling liability in a Versus-Style game. He can still force mid/lows easily, as you can see in this demonstration from @Cato__.

And Hit’s damage output seems respectable enough, as shown off by @TeaMandem.

Brandon Pollard shows off the strength of anchor Vegeta with these Sparking Blast combos.

Two meters, two assists, and one mixup is all you need to kill with this Android 16 setup from @Antinomy001.

If you have Android 21 unlocked, then it’s time to start learning your steal setups! Silvius Sama has multiple setups that net two stolen moves in a single combo:

mahouko08 has a 4 bar, 2 assist combo that nets 7.3k in damage with Our Lord Yamcha.

Not to be outdone, shows off his own 3-meter 7k combo with the God of Destruction, Beerus.

Last, but not least: if you were looking for a rowdy character to blow people up with in the early days of DBFZ, you should see TGN Anime‘s guide to Goku Blue.

As always, if you see anything worth sharing, let us know by submitting a tip for our next roundup.

Kalon CPU exposes Pokkén Tournament DX’s overly forgiving Combo Dojo mode

The “Combo Dojo” challenge mode in Pokkén Tournament DX isn’t too much of an actual challenge, as it current exists. Most of the combos are relatively simple and mostly serve to give examples of combo paths for new players.

But there’s another side to the Combo Dojo that’s not so obvious.

You see, the “Combo Dojo” isn’t so good at detecting what combo you’re actually doing, it only cares that the moves in its example combo are eventually executed. Between this and the complete lack of Pokkén’s signature Phase Shift points in this mode, it’s possible to preform some funny looking, and technically impossible, combos. As demonstrated by Kalon CPU57, check out the above paths, loops and infinites that the game would never, ever allow you to do.

Sakura and Ryu skins are coming to Monster Hunter: World

It was recently announced that Monster Hunter crossover costumes would be coming to Street Fighter V and now it looks like a little piece of Street Fighter V will be coming to Monster Hunter, as special Sakura and Ryu armor sets have been announced for Monster Hunter: World. In addition to the likeness of the two world warriors, these armors come complete with Shoryukens, Hadoukens and that signature Ansatsuken fighting stance.

Now you can trade fireballs and mixups with scaly, winged beasts of all varieties. Ryu will reportedly be arriving sometime in February this year, but no news on a date for Sakura yet. Like the Horizon Zero Dawn crossover armor, you will have to complete a special Event Quest to unlock these Street Fighter skins. Hunters on both Xbox One and PS4 will get access to the Ryu and Sakura armor, but if you have save data for Street Fighter V on your console, you’ll get early access to the Ryu Event Quest.

Stream.me announce their Dragon Ball FighterZ league, named the Cell Games

Not wanting to waste any time, Stream.me have announced their own online tournament series for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Named after the fighting tournament organized by a certain robotic bugman, the Cell Games will see players competing for $5000 over a series of eight weekly tournaments.

Similar to other Stream.me tournaments like War of the Gods or Kombat Cup, each tournament will have a qualifying event on the Saturday, followed by a Top 8 on the following Tuesday. The Top 32 contenders from each week will earn circuit points, with the eight players with the highest scores qualifying for the season finale.

This first edition of the Cell Games is limited to North American PS4 players — so bad luck you FighterZ on PC and Xbox One. Week 1 of the Cell Games will kick off on February 10th, with the schedule and additional rules to be announced soon. As you can imagine, all of the action will be streamed over on Stream.me, with registration now open for the inaugural week of competition.

Will Zasalamel be reborn in SoulCalibur VI? Catch up on his past with History Behind the Warrior

The announcement of a new game in a fighting game franchise always revives hopes of certain characters making a comeback. Whatever the game may be, there are always one or two fan favorites that were, for whatever reason, left out of a particular iteration of a series.

One such character is Zasalmel, the scythe-wielding, death-seeking immortal warrior from the SoulCalibur series. As rumors begin to swirl of his return to the franchise in SoulCalibur VI, History Behind the Warrior has created a video breaking down who he is and what role he has played in the SoulCalibur storyline.

In many ways Zasalamel’s history is intertwined with that of the entire SoulCalibur series, since it was he who unified the Soul Calibur and Soul Edge swords and became the demonic final boss Abyss in SoulCalibur III. There’s more to his involvement in the game’s events than just that, so whether you’re looking to learn more about Zasalamel or just SoulCalibur itself, check out History Behind the Warrior’s video below.

Master Swords at the ready! 2GG Hyrule Saga comes to Thunder Studios from June 23rd-24th

Polish your Mirror Shield, restring your Hero’s Bow and sharpen your Master Sword, as 2GGaming are holding a Zelda-themed Saga this summer. Titled 2GG Hyrule Saga, this tournament will see the finest warriors from across the world fighting for control of the Triforce. Alongside the usual singles and doubles tournaments for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, 2GG will be holding a special Hyrule Warriors tournament — I imagine it will be some type of Time Attack event.

As with most 2GG Sagas, expect character specialists to be flown in from all corners of the Earth to champion their piece of Triforce. Link and Toon Link players will represent the Triforce of Courage, Sheik and Zelda mains will be fighting for the Triforce of Wisdom and Ganondorf players will be for the Triforce of Power. Being an ex-Ganon main myself, I hope players like Pon, Opana, GanonTheBeast and the king of all Ganon players, Gungnir, will be able to attend this Saga.

Early bird registration is open until February 26th, so head on over to smash.gg if you’re definitely attending this royal rumble. Rather than the usual venue at Santa Ana’s Esports Arena, 2GG Hyrule Saga will take place at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California.

Bad dad but still rad: Maximilian’s Jecht breakdown for Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Jecht — Tidus’s cruel patriarch and demonic bane of the Final Fantasy X story. While he is certainly no recipient of any father of the year awards, there is a lot of hype and anticipation for his appearance in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.

In response to popular demand, Maximilian Dood has added Jecht to his series of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT breakdown videos. Unsurprisingly, Max insists that Jecht is probably the game’s most aggressive character, and the footage of his attacks shows that he’s got an arsenal of heavy blows that look like they could blow away a Summon with ease.

In addition to his brute force, Jecht’s EX move is  a cancel mechanic, appropriately named the Jecht Cancel, that allows you to chain any of his moves together, should the timing and resources be adequate. Though familiar to anyone who plays classic fighting games, a cancel system of this nature is unique to Jecht in Dissida NT.

Jecht Cancels and more get broken down in Maximilian’s Square Enix-sponsored video, which you can check out right here:

Dragon Ball FighterZ datamining finds avatars for Vegito, Cooler, Ranger 17, Bardock, Broly and Fused Zamasu

It’s only day two of Dragon Ball FighterZ, yet we already have some information on potential new avatars and DLC characters. Found by YouTuber and Dragon Ball Xenoverse dataminer SergioM3, early datamining of Dragon Ball FighterZ has uncovered entries for lobby avatars which currently are not present in the game. Along with these lobby avatars, SergioM3 also found references to extra game modes called “Z Union”, “Z League” and “Raid Battle”.

The lobby avatars that Sergio found are:

  • Broly (Super Saiyan)
  • Broly
  • Goku
  • Vegeta
  • Bardock
  • Bardock (Super Saiyan)
  • Vegito
  • Vegito (SSGSS)
  • Cooler
  • Android 17 (Ranger)
  • Zamasu
  • Fused Zamasu

Now before you go jumping the gun, this does not mean that these characters are guaranteed to be playable. After all, characters like Mr. Satan, Majin Vegeta and First Form Freeza are lobby avatars, yet they are nowhere to be seen on the character select screen. However, rumors surrounding Dragon Ball FighterZ‘s character pass have hinted at several of these characters — mainly base form Goku and Vegeta, Bardock, Broly and Vegito. When you also consider that all the character-specific assists (the Ginyu Force, Saibamen, Chiaotzu and Android 17) got lobby avatars while Zamasu didn’t, it bolsters previous rumors that he was to be his own character later down the line.

SergioM3 even cross-references his finding with a previous “datamine”, debunking rumors that characters like Jiren, Toppo, Kefla, Janemba and Kid Goku were going to come in the Dragon Ball FighterZ character pass. This certainly doesn’t rule them out for the future, so fingers crossed for more Dragon Ball Super characters later in the year.

As for the extra game modes, there are two spots in the Dragon Ball FighterZ lobby that are currently empty — Kame House and West City. It stands to reason that these modes may be what is planned to go in these two areas, once they are released.

You can check out SergioM3’s findings in the video below but as with any datamining news, always take things with a  grain of salt.

Whip it good once again with these Whip combos for The King of Fighters 2002

Whip finally found her way into The King of Fighters XIV, but that doesn’t mean the world has forgotten about her previous work in other SNK fighters. Given her high tier status of yesteryear, many remember her fondly for her play in The King of Fighters 2002.

In this combo video, we are shown what she can do both meterless, and with varying amounts of bars up to the maximum of five. Either way, people are either getting whipped or getting shot — and seeing the entirety of their health drained, most of the time.
