Pokkén Tournament DX’s Croagunk combos give your opponents negative status effects in real life

Croagunk’s addition to Pokkén Tournament DX fills a much-needed gap in its character archetypes: the insufferable troll character. With his random-item throw, status manipulations and shocking chip damage, this awkward character does as much damage to his opponent’s health bar as he does to their mental state.

Behind the goofy animations and RNG, though, there’s really difficult execution and surprisingly powerful combos. Jump Y air-swimming loops, charge-release Shoryukens, and some of the craftiest, craziest air mobility in the series give this character plenty of depth for those that like to lab.

There’s also a few bonus clips of some high damage Chandelure combos, whose thread to Croagunk I can only assume is the equal amounts of anger that Pokémon’s mid-game giggling causes opponents.

Clobber the rest of the Smash 4 cast with Izaw’s “Art of Dedede” character guide

Moving onto a character at the lower end of the tierlist, Izaw’s latest “Art of” guide for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U focuses on Dream Land’s perfect penguin king, King Dedede. While he has the worst airspeed out of the whole cast and is combo food for most of the top tiers, Dedede excels at trapping your opponent at the ledge. Izaw has even called in Dedede specialist Girthquake and Soul Train to show off just how devastating this penguin can be. With careful use of his Gordo projectile, Dedede can rack up easy damage or even stylish kills on opponents dangling off the edge of the stage.

What he lacks in speed, Dedede makes up for in power. His f-smash shatters shields and he can line up guaranteed shield breaks with careful Gordo placement. While you probably won’t ever win a major playing Dedede, you can certainly style on your opponent. Dunking someone with his Super Dedede Jump is always satisfying.

Sharpen your Wolf Fang Fist with the currently-known anime and manga references for Yamcha in Dragon Ball FighterZ

After creating some character concept videos for Dragon Ball Super’s Hit, Beerus, Goku Black, and Zamasu, IKevinX is back with another video going over the currently-known anime and manga references for one of Dragon Ball FighterZ newly-announced cast members, the Desert Bandit, Yamcha.

With the latest fighters currently unavailable to the public, and only a short character reveal trailer and a bit of gameplay footage from Game Informer to go on, IKevinX notes that their are several things missing from the video — such as Yamcha’s victory and intro animations, Ki attacks, as well as crouching and jumping attacks — but he wanted to make a video anyway for the sake of getting caught up in giving his energy to the Spirit Hypebomb.

As a good portion of Yamcha’s key relevancy comes from the earliest points in the overall series, a majority of his attacks and animations have been lifted from the original Dragon Ball, as well as some originals attacks from Xenoverse 2 and a few other past Dragon Ball fighting games. You can see the full video below!

You can see his other videos for the remaining announced cast members at the following links:

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC in February 2018.

Blow up your opponents options with these Ed option selects in Street Fighter V

While option selects haven’t been prevalent within Street Fighter V to date, they still crop up from time to time. While Ed has solid offense, it can still be blown up from people who have learned to fight against him. These options selects, however, will change the tide back in Ed’s favor.

Ed has various options to battle around his opponents’ V-Reversals. The first one is off of a jump-in — that by buffering low short into low jab into EX Psycho Upper, you will get EX Psycho Upper if your opponent V-Reversals, and will otherwise get the start of a combo or blockstring that will conclude with Psycho Flicker if your opponent does nothing, or gets hit.

These next two take care of the approach from the ground. Using this, if they V-Reversal on the first hit of this blockstring, it will buffer into a super, and otherwise will continue the blockstring.

The last one is slightly similar, but will perform an EX Psycho Upper if they V-Reversal.

Five custom game modes ways to have fun with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Tired of playing competitively in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? If only there were any special, custom modes for it… the Beefy Smash Doods are doing it the old-fashioned way — making up their own rules to turn Smash 4 on its head.

The Doods present five distinct gameplay “modes” that radically change up the way the game is played.

  • Point System — look at a competitive tier list, and randomly select characters. Gain points with a modifier that rewards you for winning with a lower-tier and gives you less points if you use a higher-tier character.
  • Sounds Like Smash — randomly pick eight characters, don’t look at the screen, and figure out all the selected fighters based on sound only
  • The Ganon Challenge — four or eight players. Everyone, except one person, pick Ganondorf. See how many stocks the single person can take from the Ganondorfs, and then rotate to see who has the best score.
  • The Smash Boardgame — Use the character select screen as a board. Advance by taking stocks during matches and play whatever character your cursor lands on as you advance.
  • Duelist Pro — a venerated game mode where you keep yourself in the air as Toon Link and try to throw other players down

Go ahead and give those modes shot, if you haven’t already. Which one is your favorite? Maybe you have a “custom game” developed by yourself? Let us know in the comments.

Brawlhalla dives onto PlayStation 4 on October 17th

After almost two years in Steam Early Access, Brawlhalla is ready to launch on both PC and PlayStation 4 on October 17th. The free-to-play platform fighter currently has 34 playable characters, with the cannon-wielding Corsair joining the roster on October 18th.

If players download the free-to-play version, they will access just a portion of the roster, but if you purchase the $19.99 All Legends Pack on Steam or the Founder’s Pack on PS4, you’ll gain access to all 34 characters, as well as any future editions.

With the Brawlhalla World Championship coming up later next month in Atlanta, now is the perfect time to jump in on the action. Cross-play between the PS4 and PC version is planned further down the line, so all players can compete against one another.

VesperArcade discusses Street Fighter V’s upcoming Arcade Mode features: leaderboards & monthly rewards

More tidbits on Street Fighter V‘s upcoming single-player content.

Continuing the discussion on Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition details as per what was shown at New York Comic Con, VesperArcade talks about new secondary features to be offered by the upcoming Arcade Mode: namely monthly leaderboards that will earn top players unique titles to slap onto their profile. It seems pretty clear that Capcom wants SFV’s Arcade Mode to offer more than a basic arcade ladder climb, and is providing incentives to draw players to the offline versus-CPU mode.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition hits PlayStation 4 and PC on January 18, 2018.

Celebrate 25 years or Mortal Kombat with this video from NetherRealm Studios

Back in 1992, Midway Games launched the first entry of what would become one of the most celebrated fighting game franchises ever. Now, 25 years later (give or take a few days) Midway’s successor, NetherRealm Studios, is paying tribute to Mortal Kombat.

Launched in arcades on October 8, 1992, Mortal Kombat went on to become a one of the most influential video games — not just among fighting games, but among games in general. The game’s controversial violence led to the eventual creation of a ratings system for games, now run by the ESRB. The same over-the-top action and violence, alongside a plethora of secrets, bonuses, and more, had kept the series alive in the hearts and minds of gamers, even if some installments failed to catch the same competitive traction as other franchises.

The video below celebrates all of that, and includes excerpts from some of the creative team at NRS such as John Vogel, Carlos Pesina, Steve Beran, Tony Coskie, Dan Forden, and of course, Ed Boon.

Now, the description for the video says that there’s more to come — so expect more from NetherRealm as they celebrate 25 years of this classic series.

Bandai Namco America releases Dragon Ball FighterZ character trailers for Gohan and Majin Buu

Subscribers to the Bandai Namco Entertainment America were likely a bit surprised to see trailers pop up for Dragon Ball FighterZ characters Gohan and Majin Buu this week. After all, it wasn’t a secret that these two fighters would be in the game: they’ve been there since the beta.

Still, you might as well get used to seeing these now — as these 30-second trailers are perfectly sized for ad spaces to promote the pending 2018 release.

At the rate Namco has been playing catch-up with these character trailers, they will be done with the currently-revealed cast long before DBFZ’s release date. It’s purely speculation, but the fact they are knocking these character trailers out now could be because there are much bigger announcements to come.

Dragon Ball FighterZ will be available in February 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam PC — with pre-orders granting early access to an open beta, to be held closer to release.

NorCal StrongStyle returns this coming February

One of the most celebrated competitions in competitive Tekken is none other than NorCal StrongStyle. This Tekken-exclusive event, hosted by Bronson Trans and his team, is one of the few that doesn’t come back on a yearly basis — and as such, its return is seen as a big deal. And return it will, as a teaser for a new StrongStyle has just been dropped by the organizers.

NorCal StrongStyle will finally return in February of next year. The event will take place on February 10 to 11, 2018, at the DoubleTree by the Hilton Hotel in San Jose, CA. The game featured at the event will be none other than Tekken 7, Bandai Namco’s latest entry into the series.

Unlike the previous StrongStyle, players will actually be able to watch this event live over the internet. Team Sp00ky and 10/0 will be handling streaming and production for the event for those who are unable to attend.
