Has USA finally caught up with Japan? New documentary covers the FGC’s “American Revolution”

Phil Nolan, the videographer who documented the rise of SonicFox, once again turns his lens towards the American fighting game community in his latest project Street Fighter: The American Revolution. This new documentary zeroes in on how the  skill gap that has always existed between American and Japanese top Street Fighter players has seemingly been closed, with the Americans finally winning what is referred to as a 20-year game of catch-up. Going as far back to the days of Super Street Fighter II Turbo all the way up to Evolution 2017,  Phil Nolan recaps some of the FGC’s most fierce East vs. West clashes with the help of some of the community’s finest.

Floe, Justin Wong, NuckleDu, and K-Brad all are featured, giving anecdotes and other bits of fighting game history that have laid the foundation for this long-running international rivalry. The film also emphasizes how Street Fighter V has helped level the playing field for American fighters, from the nature of its release to how the game itself rewards a more offensive style.

Kenny Omega and Xavier Woods run it back in Tekken 7 in this hilarious skit from CEO 2017

At CEO 2016, New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Kenny Omega and the WWE’s Austin Creed (A.K.A. Xavier Woods), faced off in a first-to-five Street Fighter V exhibition match following a war of words across social media, Wood’s YouTube gaming Channel UpUpDownDown, and even WWE and NJPW programming. Ultimately Omega and his Alex claimed victory over Woods’ Birdie, granting the Bullet Club leader possession of the CEO Championship.

Now, one year later, the two have returned to CEO 2017. Though the extravagant lifestyle of being a Champion, as well as a member of The Elite, has appeared to dull “The Cleaner’s” edge. Noticing this, Woods looks to take revenge in the newly-released battleground of Tekken 7. Will Omega’s Bryan Fury be able to “clean up” Xavier? Or will the Power of Positivity and the costume of Omega’s rival, IWGP Champion Kazuchika “Rainmaker” Okada, be able to guide Woods and his King to victory? Find out in the two-part encounter below. Capcom Fighters interview Smug about Evo 2017, his match against Abao and how to improve Balrog

Following their talk with Evo 2017 champion Tokido, Capcom Fighters have released another interview from the show, with community manager Matt Edwards talking to Duff City mayor RISE|Smug. Alongside discussing Smug’s history with fighting games, Edwards asks how Smug would improve Balrog, what he learned from his loss to Qanba|Abao and the backstory behind his rivalry with Infused|Imstilldadaddy.

Before Evo, Smug admits that he didn’t really study his opponents before a tournament — he would just jump into the match and hope for the best. That strategy came back to bite him against Abao, who clearly had prepared for the Balrog match-up before their game. From that loss, Smug now wants to focus his energies into developing counter-strategies to help defeat particular opponents. He sees the loss as a positive, as it has now given him the drive to really improve as a player.

As for improving Balrog, the main change he’d make is to the boxer’s haircut. According to Smug, Balrog’s hairline is “like an N64 controller”, so he really just want the man to get a fresh new do. If he had won the tournament, he would have given Balrog a flat top as part of his Champion’s Costume, no question.

Check out Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]’s Wagner in Swillo’s day one combo video

While the rest of the world has to wait for the release of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] for later this year, those that live in Japan (or are just willing to create Japanese accounts) are able to buy and play this brand new Arc System Works release right now. Developed by French Bread and Ecole Software (also the creators of Melty Blood, which UNIL is largely a successor of), UNIL[st] is the most recent game you can get from ArcSys to prepare you for BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, a game that definitely won the crowd of Evo 2017 over when revealed.

Multi-game FGC pros and YouTuber Swillo & BimmyQuestion got their hands on the game and showed off some early combos for one of the new characters, the flaming sword-wielding Wagner. Those of you that are waiting patiently for late 2017 should take notes!

ZOWIE|GamerBee interviewed by Bizarro Mike in his new show, “Crush Groove”

Michael “Bizarro Mike” Martin, whom you may know as a former face of the now-defunct Yahoo! Esports, has started a new interview show on YouTube called “Crush Groove.” The show’s first guest is one of the FGC’s most notable stars of the Street Fighter IV era: ZOWIE’s Street Fighter pro Bruce “GamerBee” Hsiang.

Shot at Evo 2017, the conversational and relaxed format works well for GamerBee’s energetic personality. The two talk a wide range of topics over the 30-minute interview: the transition from SFIV to SFV, motivation, growing communities, marriage, and Ranma 1/2.

Red Bull eSports continues its documentary series on the life of RB.CYB BST|Darryl “Snake Eyez” Lewis, and his performance during Final Round 20. In this episode, he talks about emotion, and how it relates to tournament play.

Which is an appropriate subject, given that Snake Eyez’s next opponent would be the loser of the Wolfkrone vs. K-Brad match. Snake Eyez may have thought his eventual opponent, Wolfkrone, would be rattled after one of the FGC’s most famous blowups. As Snake Eyez learns however, emotions can have unusual impacts on a match.

The Tamaranian princess Starfire joins the Injustice 2 roster in August

Acting as the last character of Injustice 2‘s Fighter Pack 1, NetherRealm Studios have just released the trailer for the future queen of Tamaran: Starfire. The former Teen Titans member is a highly mobile fighter, using her power of flight and starbolts to rain fire down on her opponents. Besides throwing normal starbolts, Starfire can launch a special starbolt prism, which can focus her normal blasts into a powerful full-screen beam.

Her character trait looks to be the ability to hover in the air, allowing her to fill the air with bright green projectiles. I imagine if you were waiting for a super-fast zoning character, Starfire looks to be your woman. She spends the majority of the trailer beating up fellow Teen Titan Cyborg, along with Robin and what looks like Bizarro-Superman.

Bizarro looks to be part of a new Gear set for Injustice 2, as the trailer shows him breathing fire instead of his usual ice breath. Let’s hope this confirms that there will be additional Gear sets that transform fighters into even more characters from the DC universe.

Starfire is set to launch sometime in August, and we’ll no doubt learn more about Fighter Pack 2 and 3 after her release.

Check out all the Infinite Worth/Super attacks from the Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] cast

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st] has arrived to console owners, despite the Western version not having a release date yet (but we know Aksys Games is on it). Whether you’re getting the game or haven’t seen it before, here’s a fun way to preview the title.

HydeGaming1 has a video of all the characters in the cast using their Infinite Worth supers and the Infinite Worth EXS moves. The first type can be done at any time, as long as a character has a full power bar. The second type can only be done when your character has low health, and it’s typically called “pillar” because of its universal activation animation.

Genesis 5 moves the legendary Super Smash Bros. tournament from San Jose to Oakland

While the majority of the FGC was enraptured by the action going on at Evo, another esteemed tournament series revealed details on its next installment. Moving from its usual spot in San Jose, Genesis 5 will take place in Oakland, California, running from January 19th-21st 2018.

Taking place at the Oakland Convention Center for Friday and Saturday, Genesis 5 finals will then move to the Paramount Theater to finish off proceedings. Similar to last year, Genesis 5 will be hosting tournaments for:

  • Super Smash Bros. 64
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Rivals of Aether

The Genesis team are planning to announce more side events in the future, so expect potential tournaments for Street Fighter V, Catherine and maybe even Icons: Combat Arena.
