Grind your opponents into the pavement: Abigail’s Street Fighter V character introduction video

With Abigail, Street Fighter V‘s fourth Season 2 character, set to release next Tuesday, Capcom UK’s Matt Edwards gives us an in-depth introduction to Mad Gear’s gear-head in the latest Character Introduction Series video. Towering over the competition — as the tallest character in the SF universe — at a massive 8-feet tall, along with being in a class of his own when it comes to health, boasting a whopping 1100, his counter V-Skill and armored Nitro Run will no doubt make him a dangerous opponent. His V-Trigger grants him the ability to charge a variety of punch attacks to provide them with armor, and even the ability to guard break his foes when held fully. He will no doubt satisfy fans of Hugo from previous titles, as well as players who like to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents by harassing them at all ranges — as he searches to find who stole his beloved monster truck.

For those concerned that his stature may make him immune to being crossed-up or thrown like other characters, have no fear: no special exceptions will be made for the Mad Gear lieutenant, as seen in this Tweet by Edwards.

Edwards also confirmed that we’ll get our first look at Abigail in full action tomorrow, during a WinnerStaysOn stream, after the UK regulars return from Evo.

For more on Abigial, you can check out Capcom-Unity’s breakdown of his abilities here.

Abigail will be released next Tuesday, July 25th, alongside the Metro City Bay Area stage!

“Behind The Scenes” trailer for Tekken 7’s Geese Howard features Harada meeting SNK Executives

The reveal of SNK’s iconic villain Geese Howard as Tekken 7‘s latest DLC character was one of the most shocking — and crowd-pleasing — announcements of Evo 2017. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been, though: Harada said he wanted South Town’s king in his game over a year ago in an interview with GameRevolution.

The latest “Behind The Scenes” trailer for Geese doesn’t add anything new for the character itself that we didn’t already see in the Evo trailer. It does, however, feature a skit with Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada meeting with SNK executives and mulling over possible character picks. The torturous part of this trailer, perhaps, is the fact because of the nature of Harada’s teasing, this could be a hint at any number of future collaborations: several SNK characters are mulled over, including Samurai Shodown’s Galford.

It could also mean nothing. After all, data mining (and meetings!) led us to believe we’d see Sol Badguy as the Tekken reveal:

Which isn’t off the table, necessarily, given Harada’s close interactions with Arc System Works lately, as well. It’s getting more and more difficult to tell, though, whether Harada is just mastering the troll art of Red Herrings, or if some of these things are actually hints/leaks at all…

Unsheathe your blade with all of the known anime and manga references for Future Trunks in Dragon Ball FighterZ

Following the reveal of his official gameplay trailer at the Evo finals for Tekken 7, IKevinX has wasted no time in compiling all of the known anime and manga references for the new fighter.

Here, we can see that Trunks’ introductory scene and initial Super Saiyan transformation are beautifully replicated from the anime, as well as several of his moves being drawn from DBZ, Super, GT and even Extreme Butoden. We also see his signature Burning Attack — and all of its intricate hand motions-fully recreated, which looks especially cool in Arc System Work’s cel-shaded artstyle! Trunks also slices up Frieza with his sword, complete with split effects, culminating in the Shining Sword Attack that lead to the tyrant’s first demise. Lastly, we see his Lightning Sword Slash he used to vanquish Android 14 in Super Android 13! as well as his Heat Dome attack, fittingly used on Perfect Cell. You can see the full video with all the comparisons below.

Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to be released in early 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. Sign-ups for a closed beta on PS4 will open on July 26th, and will feature all seven currently-revealed characters, as well as two more Z Warriors to be unveiled on July 21st in V-Jump magazine.

If you’d like to see more references to the source material for other fighters, check out Goku and Frieza, Teen Gohan and Vegeta and Perfect Cell and Majin Buu.

Animated series “The King of Fighters: Destiny” gets new trailer, reveals Mai, Benimaru, and more

As previously reported, SNK is working on a new CG animated series called The King of Fighters: Destiny. While the previous trailer focused largely on the backstory of the Bogards, this trailer shows off some action sequences, and previously missing characters.

While there is still no date set for release, SNK promises it will air with 24 episodes. The series will be purchasable through Steam. Those that have some yen laying around (and access to the Japanese PlayStation Store) will be happy to know KOFXIV is also on sale. It’s marked down to ¥2160, or about $20 dollars USD.

CapcomFighters catches up with Tokido, following his landmark Evo 2017 victory

Ten years on from his Super Street Fighter II Turbo win at Evo 2007, Echo Fox’s Tokido was crowned Street Fighter V champion at Evo 2017 last night. It was one of the greatest Top 8s in history, with some fantastic play from all competitors who managed to make it to the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

After the confetti had settled and the crowds had piled out of the arena, Capcom community manager Matt Edwards was able to catch up with the new champ to talk about his Evo run and thoughts during his battle against PG|Punk.

Tokido even mentions why he used a taunt combo during the match–spoilers: it’s because it’s looks “godlike”.

Red Bull eSports shares on-the-spot interviews with Evo players in new “Player Select” series

Red Bull eSports presence at Evo is shocking to no one: they do, after all, sponsor FGC titans in the form of Darryl ‘Snake Eyez’ Lewis and William “Leffen” Hjelte. Their latest video series, however, isn’t about them. It’s about the average player on the floor, their experience, and their shared excitement over Evo.

Featured above are interviews with Joe “LI Joe” Ciaramelli, Brian “Brian_F” Foster, Tempo Storm’s Alex Myers, Samantha “Persia” Hancock, Saliou “Saliou” M’Boup, Christian “TeamKhris” Bauman, and Echo Fox owner Rick Fox. They all represent different levels of play, games, expertise, different purposes for being there. Their passion for this community and genre, however, are the same.

And these are just a sampling of the interviews from the floor of Evo. Red Bull Esports made a rather lengthy playlist that you can check out here.

Catch up with all of the panels from Evo 2017

Aside from the white hot fighting game action, Evo also hosts a number of panels for which players and fans can get to interact with people within the industry. Evo 2017 was no different with a number of panels hosted by both Evo itself, as well as industry and community leaders.

Now while the expected panels from Capcom and SNK didn’t come to pass, we still had a number of great panels from companies like Twitch, Evo first timers Square Enix, well known personality Maximilian, as well as from the Evo staff. For those who missed these panels, we’ve shared them below. Take note that these are quite long, some reaching an hour in length, so we suggest setting aside some time for those who want to watch them.

With this year being the 15th anniversary of Evo, one of the biggest panels at the event was the one on the history of the event. Hosted by Evo and Shoryuken.com co-founder Tom “inkblot” Cannon. The panel covers a lot of ground from the events humble beginnings to what it is now. Along the way, Tom showcases some memorable moments through photographs and video while also discussing how Evo has grown over the years.

Next up, the other Cannon brother, Tony “Ponder” Cannon takes the stage to discuss his groundbreaking fighting game netcode – GGPO. Starting as a proof of concept, playing emulated fighting games online to show how using a method called rollbacks could help hide the network lag, GGPO has grown into a solution used by multiple fighting games. In addition to this, the rollback technique it pioneered inspired other companies to follow suit. In his panel, Ponder goes over exactly what GGPO is and the technology behind it.

The biggest platform for streaming fighting games online – one which has hosted Evo for a number of years now – is Amazon’s Twitch. In this panel led by Zhi Liang Chew with special guest Ari “fl0E” Weintraub, the Twitch crew discuss certain things that any erstwhile streamers need to consider.

Speaking of streamers, one of the biggest fighting game streamers around is none other than the “dood” himself, Maximilian Christiansen. In his own panel, he and his crew talk about their own stream and their 5 or so years of their show and their plans for the future.

Finally, we have Square Enix’s panel. A relative newcomer to Evo, Square Enix are ready to join in on the fighting game action with their unique arena fighter Dissidia Final Fantasy NT.  That game is the focus of the panel as the team from Square Enix, including producer Ichiro Hazama, discuss why they brought the game to Evo, their ideas behind the game, including the things that make it unique as a fighting game.

Final Fight’s Abigail joins the Street Fighter V roster on July 25th

After plenty of rumors and speculation, Capcom has confirmed that Final Fight’s Abigail will be the next character joining the Street Fighter V roster. Looking completely different to his original incarnation, the Mad Gear gang member is a giant among the SFV cast, standing as tall as two Kens stacked on top of each other!

As you can imagine, Abigail is a heavy hitting grappler who overwhelms opponents with his immense strength and huge bulk. Alongside overwhelming command throws, Abigail has an armored charge move, a multi-hitting flip which takes up almost half the screen and a Critical Art where he uses his opponent as a speed bag. Much like Hugo in Street Fighter 4, be very afraid when you see this man mountain running towards you. With Abigail being as tall as he is, I’m not sure how you’ll be able to cross him up, as his head practically touches the top of the screen.

Abigail comes back with the Metro City Bay Area stage, which has fighters battling on a rundown waterfront near the bruiser’s scrapyard. If you can’t wait to throw down as this gargantuan grappler, Abigail and the Metro City Bay Area stage will launch on July 25th, alongside the Champion’s Choice outfit for Guile, the Ring of Pride and Suzaku Castle stages, as well as the nostalgia costumes for Alex, Juri and Ibuki.
