Learn how to bait and punish Zangief’s V-Reversal in Street Fighter V

YouTuber The Prince is putting together a small video series showing all the different ways the cast of Street Fighter V can beat Zangief’s V-Reversal. In part 1, he shows off options for Laura, Birdie, Akuma, Necalli, Karin, Rashid, and Nash:

The vast majority of these take advantage of the fact that you can throw out a special cancelable normal, and then react to the V-Trigger flash with a special or super. There are some interactions that go beyond that, however: for example, Birdie’s V-Trigger activation actually hitting Zangief standing during the Red Cyclone’s V-Reversal.

Somehow, there’s a Brief Karate Foolish “World Championship” in Kyoto, Japan on May 21st

The Megabit Convention in Kyoto, Japan will be paying host to a very special tournament on Sunday, May 21st. If I could italicize very special so much that it became a completely solid horizontal line, I would.

Brief Karate Foolish is a free-to-play 2D parody fighting game on Steam. It was made on a clearly limited budget, by a group of people with a good sense of humor and a decent understanding of actual fighting game mechanics. Spiritually similar to something like Dong Dong Never Die, Brief Karate Foolish plays better then it probably should (it has links! jump cancels! footsies!) and wears its intentionally-ugly D.I.Y. aesthetics with pride. I’d submit it under the kusoge category if I didn’t enjoy it so much. (Actually, no. I still would. It’s totally kusoge.)

An extreme example of the game’s combo system.

I say all of this because I never, ever would have guessed that there’d be a real tournament for this game. Run by the developers, no less! In my imagination, this is a ploy to raise awareness for the game and gain funds for a version of BKF with online play. By far BKF’s biggest weakness is that players around the globe can’t play this ridiculous thing with each other unless they are in the same room: a huge missed opportunity for a game basically begging to be streamed and laughed at.

More then likely though, this is just a group of fighting game fans looking to have a laugh at an indie-game convention. And I hope they do, and I hope someone films it. There’s no stream of the event advertised (yet!), but BKF has made it this far on dreams alone. Maybe a little bit more wishing will get a Twitch stream to show up on the 21st.

What could this be? A guide to Faust’s new Jackpot items in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2

One of the more fun changes in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 are new items for the series’ premiere doctor, Faust. While his items already have a (sometimes very punishing) layer of randomness, there’s a small chance of getting a “Jackpot” version of most of his items.

These items usually are golden, and have a much stronger effect than usual. Meteors have a chance to turn into one grand meteor that mercilessly covers nearly the whole screen, giving Faust some mix-up opportunities. He can throw out a much larger version of the mini Faust. If you’re lucky, he can throw out bigger versions of his food items that give more health (though it turns out that Sin’s calorie gauge doesn’t get more than normal).

Zissou’s testing is impressively meticulous. He shows comparisons of, for instance, the hit stun from the Golden Hammer vs. the Iron Hammer (and also how fast that leads to dizzying Sol), how quickly the Firework Bomb goes off in comparison to the regular one, and so on. Truly, the work of a Guilty Gear surgeon.

Check out their video below, which includes “drop rates” for every item.

If you’re more curious about the base properties of every item, Zissou has done a similar video that explains Faust’s items. Looking for some strategy to beat the surgeon? Also take a look at LordKnight’s Faust match-up guide.

NurseLee shares Laura meaty setups for Street Fighter V Season 2

NurseLee is back to share some more meaty setups! Last time we featured their work, it was with Ryu; now, he’s showing off setups for the Brazilian grappler Laura:

This video shows the numerous meaties Laura can apply post-sweep. He shows off both Crush Counter and normal hit options, and shows the frame data behind each interaction. Given that any of these interactions can be replaced with a command grab, it’s easy to see how strong these setups are.

Learn how to play neutral with Frabisaur on Episode 9 of The Fighter’s Dojo

After covering a variety of tips and strategies over the course of the series, Genex|Frabisaur finally lands on one of his most-requested topics–and something essential to all fighting games. Possibly easy to explain, yet difficult to master: how to properly play neutral. As some of our readers may know, this is how every round begins, the battle to establish positioning between you and your opponent, as well as trying to begin your offense or defensive strategies to gain ground and push them towards the corner. Frabisaur offers a three-part explanation, as he looks at the goals of neutral, the mentality of neutral, and the tools of neutral.

Frabisaur advises that the mentality of neutral should be to always play the opponent in front of you, as leaning solely on character matchup knowledge needs to be supplemented by identifying your foe’s habits and tendencies and exploiting them to your advantage; he demonstrates his thought process by taking you through some of his own Street Fighter V match footage. Simple things, like walking and blocking, filling up space with buttons, or buffering your combos, even on whiff, are great ways to confidently establish yourself and increase your chances of emerging victorious more often during these exchanges. You can catch the full video–with Frabisaur’s complete explanation and visual aids–below.

Senko no Ronde 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 and PC this September

Despite the genre’s habit of sticking to some tried-and-true conventions, there are some fighting game franchises that try to break the mold. One such franchise is the Senko no Ronde series of games, which combines traditional fighting game mechanics with those of a scrolling shooting game. The result is a game that takes both traditional 2D fighting game space control and projectile combat onto another level.

Now, Degica Games, Chara-Ani, and G.rev have announced that the latest installment of the series, Senko no Ronde 2, will be coming to both PlayStation 4, and PC (via Steam) on September 7. The digital edition of the game on PlayStation 4 in Japan will cost ¥ 4,800 ($43.50 USD). Meanwhile Kadokawa will also be releasing standard and limited edition physical copies of the game for ¥5,800 ($52.50 USD) and ¥9,800 ($88.70 USD) respectively.  Included in the limited edition of the game are the  “Senko no Ronde 2 Materials Guide” creation materials book, a creation materials DVD, and the original soundtrack CD.

As for the West, a similar set of digital–as well as standard and limited edition physical releases–are also planned for PlayStation 4. Details on these, however, have not yet been released.

In the meantime: here is the intro movie, and some gameplay footage.

– The Surge – TheHiveLeader

The Surge is a new Souls-like from the makers of Lords of the Fallen. It’s essentially Edge of Tomorrow (Live. Die. Repeat.) meets Dark Souls! And TheHiveLeader loves it! Then again, he’s crazy.
