Mikado Arcade shows off nearly 2 hours of tournament footage for Marvel Super Heroes

Before Marvel vs. Capcom became synonymous with “Marvel fighting game,” Capcom developed two 1v1 fighters for the famous comic book empire. Marvel Super Heroes was the second entry of the series, and featured a wide variety of unusual mechanics–most notably it’s Infinity Gem system. World-famous Mikado Arcade showed off what this game has to offer in a great tournament recently.

The Infinity Gem system allows players to enjoy a wide variety of subsystems and buffs, which you can read further about at the SRK Wiki. The gems have to be obtained manually as they appear, creating a interesting mental game where you may potentially want to give up pressure to go chase down a gem. Furthermore, gems spawn after fulfilling in-game actions, such as getting the first attack in a round, or by entering a low health state. In a way it can be considered a early example of a comeback mechanic, although more nuanced and creative one.

After the tournament, Mikado went the extra mile and did a Thanos exhibition. In a game known for its long, high-damage combos, Thanos’ are some of the easiest and most threatening. If you’ve only played Marvel vs. Capcom 2, you may not be familiar with how strong the Mad Titan was in his original games. After watching him ravage the competition here, you’ll have an idea of just how terrifying this character could be were he to show up in Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite.

Check out a new trailer and groove to new soundtrack samples for Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers

Capcom gives us an earful of the remixed tunes you can hear in Ultra Street Fighter II.

A new trailer has arrived for Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers for Nintendo Switch; Capcom and Nintendo definitely are promoting this updated title as the definitive version of the arcade classic. This trailer lists the myriad of modes and features the game will offer to Street Fighter fans.

In addition to updated graphics (if desired), the game features an updated soundtrack, too. While it’s reusing the UDON art assets from Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix for the HD visuals, USF2 won’t be using the OverClocked ReMix soundtrack from that game, it seems. There’s a new batch of remixes of the classic characters’ themes, and you can get a preview in the soundtrack sampler below.

Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers arrives on Nintendo Switch on May 26, 2017.

Hoping to bring the Excellent Adventures format to other fighting games, Cross Counter TV is expanding into Super Smash Bros. Melee with their new series titled “The Reads.” Starring Bobby “Scar” Scarnewman, Kris “Toph” Aldenderfer, and one special guest from the world of Melee, these three will venture out into the wilds of Melee netplay to get some wins, sprinkle some salt and generally entertain the audience.

The first episode of The Reads will feature Team Secret’s own SilentWolf, who will accompany Scar and Toph as they attempt to show the world that they can still keep up in the fast-paced world of Melee. To tease fans, Cross Counter TV have released a short trailer, as well as making the first episode free for everyone to watch.

Bonchan shares candid thoughts about Street Fighter V, Nash, cooking, and Punk with BornFree at NCR 2017

NorCal Regionals 2017–a Capcom Pro Tour Premier event–took place this past weekend in Sacramento, CA, and drew a lot of the best players from all over the United States, Japan, South Korea, and other regions from around the world. To say the competition was stacked is an understatement, with many top and well-known players being eliminated in the early goings of the tournament.

Red Bull’s Masato “Bonchan” Takahashi was not one of those players. He finished with a strong fourth place performance, only losing to Circa|LPN and GRPT|Fuudo, and got that far using his main, Nash–a character most players have written off as not being as viable as he was in season one, since getting hit by the nerf bat in season two.

YouTube user and FGC personality BornFree managed to catch up with Bonchan before he played in the top 32, to get his brutally honest thoughts and opinions (as translated by Kenzo Suda) about Capcom’s direction with Street Fighter V, Nash’s changes in the next patch, PG|Punk’s admiration for him, and his love of cooking. The video clocks in at almost an hour, so make sure to set aside some time to watch the whole thing below.

Updated trials are coming to Street Fighter V, according to datamined evidence

Street Fighter V’s trials may be getting a long-overdue update to match the current build.

Since Season 2 first made its significant changes to Street Fighter V, the trial mode has been outdated, left running in the game’s Season 1 state. However, it seems that we may soon see a refresh to these obsolete trials, as either an addition or replacement, to match the upcoming balance patch.

In the video below, VesperArcade discusses the new combo trials–datamined by X-Kira, and now with video evidence posted to YouTube–and how they appear to be slightly more difficult to perform, but more optimal in terms of gameplay application. The videos for the datamined trials can be found here. When–or even if–these will be integrated into Street Fighter V officiallyhas not yet been revealed.

Extend Orchid’s combos with these air throw juggles in Killer Instinct

One of the more interesting properties of Orchid’s air throw in Killer Instinct is the fact that she can continue to hit her opponent afterwards. This can lead to some extended juggles when near, or at, the corner.

TDB_Ki4life demonstrates some combos and setups that lead into Orchid’s air throw juggle extensions in this new video. The combos here are tested on version 3.7 of KI (taking into consideration the changes to Orchid’s Flick Flack). The corner sequence itself just repeats over and over, the only limit being the fact that she needs to burn meter for her Upper Firecat (EX Air Buster) for the lowest height relaunch.

Get more damage out of knockdowns in The King of Fighters XIV with these on-the-ground catch combos

One thing that helps differentiate The King of Fighters series from similar ground-based fighting games are the plethora of on-the-ground hitting moves that its characters have. These allow characters to add damage if they score a hard knockdown on their opponent. The King of Fighters XIV is no exception, and multiple characters can net additional damage with moves that catch their opponents just off the ground.

Gatoray explores these moves, as well as some combos and juggles that can be performed by using them out of knockdowns. The combos in the video below range from simple extensions to some pretty damaging combos, given enough meter. This includes an amazing 800+ damage combo for Sylvie that uses only 4 bars, for only 2 super moves.

Your wish is granted: Check out this Dragon Ball Z stage mod for Street Fighter V on PC

One of the most popular way to modify Street Fighter V’s aesthetics on PC is to swap character models out with those of characters from other popular franchises. This next mod, however, doesn’t change a character–but rather an entire stage. Created by Monkeygigabuster, this mod lets Street Fighter characters duke it out in Kami’s Lookout from Dragon Ball Z. The stage comes complete with two wish-granting dragons (Shenron and Porunga) watching the action from the background.

Interested players can get the stage mod (which players can choose to replace either Frosty Boulevard, or the training stage) over at Monkeygigabuster’s DeviantArt page. In the meantime, check the stage mod in action in this video from XusesGB.

Frabisaur teaches you how to strengthen your offense in The Fighter’s Dojo, episode 5

After covering the ins and outs of frame data in his last episode, Frabisaur’s latest entry of The Fighter’s Dojo focuses on applying the concepts of frame data to strengthen your offense when in the heat of a real battle scenario.

The questions answered in this video include: “How do I open up my opponent?” and “How do I create strong offense?” Beginning the video by discussing perspective shifts that can come about from spending too much time playing in Training Mode and against the CPU–such as focusing solely on what you want to do, instead of trying to outwit your opponent and counter what they are trying to do.

After a brief discussion on what frame traps are and how to use them, Frabisaur utilizes the visual aid of Nash putting Balrog into a terrifying chain of mixups, due to the Paradoxical Avenger’s advantageous pokes. He moves on to another integral part of higher-level play that can carry some confusing lingo, the concept of meaties.

A meaty is basically forcing your opponent to wake up into an already active move. Startup frames of animation take time, especially on heavier buttons. After I’ve knocked down the opponent, while they are doing their stand up animation, before their hurtbox becomes active, I can use that time to do all of my startup frames and make them stand up into an already active hitbox. They’re essentially waking up into an attack. The reason this is such a good mixup is because I can use it with an attack or a throw, since they have 5 frames of startup. So [Balrog] gets forced into a terrible situation, where he’s got to guess, “is it gonna be a throw, button or is he gonna try and block on me to bait out that reversal?”

In closing, Frabisaur touches on the importance of having the knowledge and judgment to determine what decisions to make when foes correctly guess and escape your pressure, as well as identifying when the proper time comes to end your offense, depending on your character’s specific tools and the situation at hand. You can see the entire video below. You can also follow Frabisaur on Twitter, and he will be streaming soon at https://www.twitch.tv/frabisaur.

Episode 6 will examine how to apply the concepts of frame data to improving your defense, in order to make you a more well-rounded player regardless of your chosen game.
