Offering another potential way to play Super Smash Bros., Alt Lab Controllers show off the Smash Stick

While a battle has been raging between the Smash Box and the B0XX to be the true next evolution in controllers for competitive Smash, a third controller has quietly slipped into view. Choosing to eschew the HitBox-esque buttons for controlling a character’s movement, this new controller uses a traditional arcade-stick to move characters about in a way more players understand at a glance.

Aptly named the Smash Stick, this prototype controller looks more like a traditional fight stick, with a joystick and five button ‘homerow’ to move your character around. Unlike the Smash Box or the B0XX, the joystick is completely analog, with buttons for X, Z and the C-Stick being placed outside of the homerow. There is a toggle on the back of the stick to switch the C-Stick buttons to the D-Pad and vice versa.

While the stick may not offer the surgical precision that the Smash Box or the B0XX provide, it is an ergonomic design with a button layout which requires minimal flexion or extension of the fingers while playing. From first glance, it seems to sidestep many of the problems that has plagued both the Smash Box and B0XX in terms of giving players a distant advantage in game, while also being a suitable ergonomic alternative to the traditional GameCube controller.

The Smash Stick is still in active development so expect aspects of its button layout and overall design to change as more people test this extra control alternative.

Jmcrofts lists 5 things he loves and 5 things he hates about Street Fighter IV

Recently, jmcrofts has been doing a series of videos chronicling both some of the things he loves, as well as some of the things he loves about particular games. Last month, he even provided us with his list of the top 10 worst characters [in terms of tiers and competitive viability] in Street Fighter history.

This time, however, he takes a look at five things he hates, followed by five things he loves about the Street Fighter IV series, in order to provide viewers with a balanced perspective and to show both sides of the coin.

SFIV was the title that reestablished the fighting game genre back into mainstream culture, and brought our community to unprecedented heights that many thought we would never reach. With the largest character roster in the history of the series, with a massive 44 fighters, along with new mechanics, such as Ultras and  Focus Attacks, there was quite a lot to learn about the game at and all levels of play. Combine these with Crouch Teching, Option Selects, a pletheora of Divekick and Vortex characters and some of the most celebrated balance in the franchise’s history by the time Ultra’s final patch rolled around and you’ll quickly find that there is certainly a lot of elements that could prove divisive amongst the title’s massive fanbase.

Towards the end of the video, jmcrofts provides a message to viewers about considering both sides of the argument before casting final judgment on any product.

I think it’s important for all of us that you kind of don’t think about things in purely black and white. It seems like for a lot of people they either completely love something and they can’t accept any criticism of it, or they completely hate it and they get upset when people say good things about it. So I think it’s important to kind of be able to acknowledge good and bad things in everything. No game is perfect, and no game is 100% bad with no redeeming qualities.

Do you agree or disagree with his list? Are there other things you would’ve put in your own? Check out the full video below and let us know how you feel in the comments section!

Jmcrofts has also made “5 Things I Love and Hate” lists about Street Fighter V and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 as well, that you can check out here and here.

Yamazaki unleashes pure carnage in this King of Fighters XIV Roundup

One of my personal favorite SNK characters, Ryuji Yamazaki, has finally made his glorious return to the King Of Fighters series, joining the KOF XIV roster earlier this month as part of the game’s massive Version 2.00 update. Today we shine a special spotlight on what the murderous Hakkeshu of Death is capable of in his newest incarnation.

We begin with a combo video from veteran KOF content creator Persona Entertainment. The first four combos aim for maximum damage utilizing between 1 and 4 Bars, along with 1000-1250 MAX Gauge. These combos also have the added bonus of being performed on his Fatal Fury compatriots, most of whom still have 1,000 life, but there are also Touch Of Death sequences 0n the now 900 health Mai and 950 health Kim, while his former boss Geese Howard now sports 1050, the same as Ryuji himself.

Yamazaki may have left his trusty knife behind but he now boasts a new Super in KOF XIV–Pit Viper–that inflicts massive poison damage to the opponent, despite not being calculated in the damage counter in Training Mode, that will persist when Climax Canceled into his Drill Super, which means your foe is continuously losing life as you prolong the attack by mashing for more hits, damage and alternative animations! (Eat your heart out, F.A.N.G)

Next up, we have the COMBONAUTS take on Yamazaki, which features some stylish Super and Climax Cancels, MAX Mode confirms, more Pit Viper poison goodness, combos off of his Counter and a Rising Heart whiff punish on poor 950-health Love Heart. We even have a combo off of a Double Returned Mamahaha that poisons an unsuspecting Nakoruru.

Gatoray gives us a look at every projectile Yamazaki can Parry with his Double Return. Unlike Whip’s Orbs, his Kaiser Wave’s cover the screen extremely quickly, similarly to Azrael’s Phalanx Cannons in Blazblue. He can even get multiple Waves from multi-hitting projectiles, and in MAX Mode, they’re large and durable to clear the screen of enemy fire, even other EX projectiles.

LeoKingdom69 gives us a look at all 4 Levels of Yamazaki’s Drill Climax and how they differ in damage, number of hits and animations, as well as a 5-Bar combo.

After releasing guides for Whip, Vanessa and Rock, TrueUnderDawgGaming has FINALLY put out his combo guide for Yamazaki.

TBS_BrunoKof also has a variety of combos.

Finally, Black Out brings us all of the win quotes to and from Yamazaki, for the entire cast, while zxyu0369 gives us the special intros between all 4 DLC characters.

Dr. Doom can TAC Infinite you from corner to corner in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 because of course he can

Recently, we featured a corner to corner TAC Infinite for Magneto in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Now, we have yet another character who can unsurprisingly go the distance off a side TAC – Dr. Doom.

In the video below, datHazy demonstrates a variation of Dr. Doom’s TAC infinite (specifically, the Plasma Beam variant) that can get him and his victim from one corner to the other off a side TAC. The main difference is a down-forward air dash where Doom would just normally fall in the regular, corner variant combined with the lack of footdives usually used in the mid screen variants.

Silence Laura’s Thunder Clap with these countermeasures for (most of) the Street Fighter V cast

Some tools to shut down Laura’s projectile pressure.

If Laura’s not up close and taking you down with her mixups, she’s trying to control your approach and punish your jumps by using her slow-crawling Thunder Clap projectile. To help players deal with this component of Laura’s game plan, Ominous_ compiled this video demonstrating a variety of ways to deal with Thunder Clap, without just jumping over it and eating an anti-air attack.

Knowing what moves your character of choice possesses with projectile-invincibility will help give you the edge; the right kind of trade can also work out in your favor. Examples for almost the whole SFV roster are shown above (including Laura herself, but Kolin players are apparently on their own).

Everyone is Maya in this Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 model swap combo video

With Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 now on PC, mods where players swap a characters model with that of another have become quite common. In fact, we’ve even featured some of them here on Shoryuken. However, what about swapping the model of a non-playable assist character? And not only that, but making a combo video out of a team consisting of that character’s model swapped into an entire team. That’s exactly what Lythero has done in his new combo video.

The video in question, which you can see below, has every single member of Lythero’s team of Dante, Viewtiful Joe, and Phoenix Wright swapped in for the latter’s assistant Maya.  The result is this frankly bizarre looking combo video where what seems to be three different versions of a character, beating up their opponent. The icing on the cake however has to be “Devil Trigger Maya” who turns invisible (likely because she has no equivalent Devil Trigger model, like Dante), with only her sword as an indication of where she is and what she’s doing.

Watch Iwate, CFN’s #1 Balrog, KO the opposition in this Street Fighter V match compilation

Nobody’ll hear the full ten count.

Balrog was dangerous in Season 1 of Street Fighter V, and is outright deadly in Season 2. We’ve seen PIE|Smug tearing it up at tournaments with the Crazy Buffalo; but sitting at the top of the Capcom Fighters Network leaderboard is Iwate from Japan, presently the highest-ranked player–and thus the highest-ranked Balrog on the network. Xuses put together this compilation of Iwate’s online matches to show what a threat this dirty boxer is!

You can check out VesperArcade’s look at Balrog’s upcoming balance changes here.
