Saudi Arabia and Japan square off in Tekken 7 at the Esports World Championships in this epic set

The Esports World Championships — founded by the International Esports Federation — has helped to catapult careers in fighting games. In the first year of Tekken 7 at the event, Thailand’s Book took a close 2nd place to Doujin from the Philippines; both ultimately found varying degrees of success on the tournament circuit this year.

This year’s championships (held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan) came down to Hakaioh of Japan and Sora from Saudi Arabia. With the two playing a long first to five set to decide the champion, the level of adaptation was high all around.

VesperArcade discusses how to make Zangief the “Red Cyclone” once again in Street Fighter V

The Red Cyclone became more like the Red Breeze in Season 3 of Street Fighter V. Zangief — once a formidable opponent for many in the game — proved to be far less strong since the patch, and with many of his most notorious players — Itabashi Zangief, and Brutus, and others — abandoning ship, you could tell there were problems in Mother Russia.

VesperArcade recently discussed the issues that caused the character to go downhill after his strongest version. Most notably, they decided that several of his nerfs need to be revoked, and named especially at his mid-kick parry move as something that needed to become more useful in Season 4.

Dragon Ball FighterZ’s sixth Saga event has banned unlicensed PlayStation controllers from use

Over the course of the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour, we have seen people wield a plethora of controllers to compete, with many players using using Hit Box-type controllers for the game, too. However, one event has decided that Hit Boxes, among other controllers, are not going to be allowed.

The 6th saga event for the tour — to be held on the 24th and 25th of November in Shinjuku, Japan — has banned all peripherals that aren’t officially licensed by Sony from their event, stating that it is an addendum to the official tour rule set. While this hits Hit Box users hard, this also affects anyone who uses a custom arcade stick that contains a Brook PCB, or anyone using legacy arcade sticks with a Brook converter. It’s also possible that anyone who even uses an officially licensed pad as a padhack for their custom joysticks may get snubbed, as organizers may be unable to discern that the circuit board itself is licensed.

The event states that they will have a limited number of HORI peripherals available for loan to players who arrive to find their controller of choice banned from the event.

Cinemassacre reviews the ill-fated video game movie Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

James Rolfe — famous for his Angry Video Game Nerd persona — has begun to delve into retro movie reviews, which he has dubbed “Rental Reviews,” as a throwback to video rental stores from the 1990s. As such, he couldn’t help to turn his sights on one of the worst video game-inspired movies, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

While his review of the first Mortal Kombat movie was far more positive, this group interview focuses on how far off-base the sequel became. With cheesy special effects, bad one-liners, and horrible camera shots, if you were ever curious about this film, skip it to watch this review instead.

Justin Wong reviews newly-released indie fighter Omen of Sorrow

Justin Wong is known as one player who does not shy away from playing every fighting game. Having dabbled in nearly every fighting game released in the last two decades, Justin understands what makes a game good, and can dissect mechanics faster than your average player.

So, after trying out the newly-released gothic fighter Omen of Sorrow, he felt compelled to give his opinion on the title. While he said he thought the game was fun and had interesting mechanics couple with good netcode, he did find a few things at fault. First, he said that the Doomed state needs to be addressed, as it makes comebacks nearly impossible. Secondly, he also said the tutorial mode was lacking in their explanations on how to play.

Ed Boon and MK actors discusses their involvement with the Mortal Kombat series

We’ve been very fortunate over the last couple of months to see a large amount of behind the scenes footage of the making of Mortal Kombat. Seeing this footage has been a history lesson of the early days of fighting game creation — doubly so given that Mortal Kombat was the beginning of motion captured sprites in general.

With this video, we get to not only hear from the actors regarding their involvement with the series — and how they felt to be a part of the legacy of the series — but also from Ed Boon on the production challenges of designing so many characters.

Sakurai decrees no manga-based characters will ever make it into Super Smash Bros. series

With the popularity of Dragon Ball FighterZ, many were hoping that characters from the storied anime and manga franchise would find their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, those dreams have been dashed by director Masahiro Sakurai himself.

In a recently-uncovered interview in Japanese, Sakurai stated, “It is impossible for manga characters to join (Super Smash Bros.). While we can accept characters from other companies, we cannot, under any circumstances, take in anything and everything under the sky.”

So while Goku and his allies and enemies may be the hottest thing in fighting games at the moment, their roots in manga prohibit them from existence in the Smash universe.

VesperArcade discusses potential changes to Cammy in Street Fighter V Season 4

VesperArcade has set his sights on the character everyone in Street Fighter V seems to love to hate. Considered strong since Season 1, she has only climbed the tier list to the point of top 5 status in Season 3. There has since hardly been a top 8 that does not see Cammy represented, as she is the highest-used character in finals of the Capcom Pro Tour this year.

VesperArcade discusses ways that Cammy should be approached in changes in the coming season. While a lot of the problems could be addressed with buffs from other characters, things such as her throw are definitely on the wishlist to be changed directly.
