Learn how to defend against the post-hit mix-up of Josie’s D/F+3 in Tekken 7

Just because a low is reactable does not invalidate its usefulness in Tekken 7. This is certainly true in the case of Josie’s D/F+3: it might clock in at a slower 26 frames, but it has a number of strong properties to balance out its slower startup.

Even if you know how to react to its startup, D/F+3 has decent step coverage and evasive properties — not to mention that once it actually hits you, Josie has an entire arsenal of crouch dash and string mixups she can work afterwards.

That doesn’t mean you’re defenseless against this mix-up, however: as Chad Barley demonstrates in his latest tutorial video, you can make informed defensive decisions to simplify the post-hit mix-up and avoid losing unnecessary amounts of life.

Pokkén Tournament DX pro BadIntent shares how to focus your training for self-improvement

“Each step you climb is one more step up the ladder!”

While BadIntent might be known best for his tournament placements in Pokkén Tournament DX, his latest advice is applicable to every player of every game in the FGC. If you find yourself losing games — even if you feel like you know a lot about the game — it might be because you’re focusing on the wrong skill set for the level you’re playing at.

BadIntent’s latest video tackles what he calls the “Building Blocks of Improvement” — a tool to help us visualize where we are in our fighting game journey, and where we broadly need to focus in order to improve our results.

Call your opponent’s bluff with these Oswald combos for The King of Fighters XIV

“A trump of cards is useless if you never play it.”

It’s easy to intimidate your opponent when the deck is stacked in your favor. Oswald’s high damage output tilts the odds on your side in The King of Fighters XIV with his well-calculated assaults!

As demonstrated by playergodaines, Oswald can convert big from any position with any amount of meter, making him a versatile pick regardless of his team slot. Those that are in love with his corner Queen loops will be happy to see that Oswald even has a touch-of-death that employs this flashy combo option.

The King of Fighters XIV recently released its 3.0 update which brought new characters and balances to the title. SNK plans to release a 3.01 patch to fix certain issues surrounding the recent changes.

Scallywag93 demonstrates optimal wall punishments in situational scenarios for Tekken 7’s Leo

“I gotta find a way to improve Leo’s wall game” is not a sentence anyone that plays Tekken 7 is guilty of thinking of, or saying aloud. And yet, for the intermediate Leo player, the latest Scallywag93 video does just that:

Once you are aware of both your stage positioning and your opponent’s frame data, Leo can opt for a (in other scenarios) weaker punishment option versus -13 lows at the wall for absurd amounts of damage. Proper usage of Leo’s uf+1,2 — among other tools — actually results in more damage at the wall then even some launch punishment options, thanks to its particular type of wall-splat state. This is an excellent example of the strength of situational awareness, and of Leo’s top-tier versatility.

World Warrior FGC breaks down the theory and application of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s shimmy

If you’ve spent any time watching fighting game tournaments, you likely have a basic idea of what the “shimmy” is — a quick movement designed to bait a whiff out of an opponent. What may be a little more difficult to grasp for a newer player in Street Fighter V (or any game, really!) is the range, and the reason you would want to do this.

Whether you’re preying on your opponent’s tendency to throw break on wake-up or press a button at a specific range, you have to have a reason for doing everything in order to improve. World Warrior FGC‘s “Git Gud Series” tackles the shimmy concept, and offers some practice mode drills for you to turn your understanding of the shimmy into a powerful weapon.

VODs and stats now available for massive 510-man Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown tournament, the 16th Beat Tribe Cup

102 5-player teams gathered on April 1st in Tokyo, Japan to play Virtua Fighter 5 Final Shodown. That statistic alone is staggering, but it’s not even the most interesting fact in the mountain of data gathered by virtuafighter.com admin Myke for the 16th Beat Tribe Cup event.

And it’s not just stats that he gathered — Myke took the 11-hour archive and dissected, translated, and timestamped each match in the playlist above. The event was originally streamed live on Game Newton Ooyama’s Twitch channel, which hosts several great tournaments for varied games. (And also served as the stream for many Evo Japan side tournaments — be sure to check out their archive!)

Seth Killian interviews Justin Wong at NYU Spring Fighter 2018, talks about JWong’s beginnings in the FGC

“I couldn’t get one game on Eddie Lee in Marvel vs. Capcom… that made me want to get better.”

If you haven’t heard the story of Justin Wong’s introduction to the FGC, then Team Spooky has an excellent interview for you.

“Some kid from New York”, as the bare ’90s internet knew him originally knew him, sat down with host Seth Killian at NYU Spring Fighter 2018 to talk ancient MvC1 lore. The legend of Eddie Lee, Chinatown Fair, Marvel vs. Capcom, and more are covered in this nearly hour-long history lesson on the roots of New York’s Prodigal Son.

The King of Fighters ’99 releases worldwide for Xbox One, Japan only for PlayStation 4

The King of Fighters ’99 is the latest ACA NEO GEO re-release to come to modern consoles, hot on the heels of Real Bout Fatal Fury Special’s release on the Nintendo Switch. SNK’s 6th installment of the series, this fighter introduced the “Striker” assist system into its core gameplay, making it a wild and different experience from other KOF titles up until that point. You can read more about KOF ’99’s mechanics over on the SRK wiki.

Want to pick up KOF99? Well, you may be in luck — it was released for both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but it would seem that some PS4 fans have, bizarrely, been left out in the cold. Though KOF99 can easily be purchased on Xbox’s website worldwide, it would appear the decision was made, at the time of this writing, to only release the PS4 version to Japanese audiences.

We have to suspect that KOF ’99 will find its way to the US PlayStation store at some time in the future, just like its previous entries.

The King of Fighters XIV version 3.0 roundup: Heidern Storm Bringer bug, Oswald combos, Dinosaur oki and more!

It has been a few days since version 3.0 of The King of Fighters XIV has dropped, and Twitter exploded with new tech almost immediately upon its release. The patch brought us several new characters and a host of balance changes for the preexisting cast — let’s take a look and see what the FGC has uncovered since our last roundup!

Let’s start out with some basics. If you’re unsure of which new character you want to try out first, Gatoray has a decent sampler of each characters combos.

TheLastKaede shows us that Heidern’s classic “Storm Bringer” bug has made it into KOF XIV — is it safe to say this is a feature, at this point?

Maybe less intentional is Blue Mary’s “Double Rolling” bug, demonstrated here by COMBONAUTS.

Persona Entertainment shows us the fantastic combo potential of Heidern.

Apolo Loussalier gives a great breakdown for newcomer Njad, covering her normals, okizeme, and more.

APE OF THE U N I V E R S E shows off why the King of Dinosaurs hasn’t gone extinct in KOF!

And to close us out today, LostFeather413 shows off Oswald’s combo potential. I’m just going to use this opportunity to gush about how cool Queen is in combos. Thank you, SNK.
