Get a glimpse of Undisputed Street Fighter — an upcoming 304-page art book celebrating Street Fighter’s history

Bleeding Cool have shared their exclusive look at Undisputed Street Fighter: The Art and Innovation Behind the Game-Changing Series, a 304-page hardcover art book celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original fighting game franchise. The book is the collaborative effort of writer Steve Hendershot and editor Tim Lapetino. Below are statements from the writer and editor, as well as a a gallery with a few sample pages from the upcoming book.

Steve Hendershot:

Street Fighter is a running, 30-year conversation between the series’ creators, players and fans. Its genius — the magic of shoulder-to-shoulder arcade play, and the playful, vivid style of its characters — stems from that back-and-forth. It’s been so much fun to hear all sides of that conversation from Tokyo and Osaka to San Francisco and Chicago, and I’m excited to tell the story through this book.

Tim Lapetino:

It’s been an excellent adventure delving so deeply into the labyrinth of characters and people who make up Street Fighter Nation. We’ve drawn from 30 years of the best art and stories the franchise has to offer, and Steve has brought his fresh take to all things Street Fighter with a ton of new interviews and insights. The book is a love letter to those who grew up with Street Fighter and also to everyone carrying it into the future.

New trailer surfaces for SNK’s forthcoming CG animation series, The King of Fighters: Destiny

A new trailer for The King of Fighters: Destiny, SNK’s forthcoming CG animation series, was uploaded on January 19th. The 3D project is a result of SNK’s partnership with Chinese investors, and the series has an official page on the SNK China website.

Building on hints dropped via short glimpses from the first trailer, the new footage touches on details of the Bogard brothers’ backstory from the Fatal Fury series. Though it is also clear that The King of Fighters protagonist — Kyo Kusanagi — is undoubtedly on center stage, it seems that the Bogard and Kusanagi stories will be told in tandem, with the former used to do more of the world building while the latter drives the series’ main conflict.

The trailer does not include an official release date, but we do know that it is set to air sometime this summer. Hopefully we will hear something soon, but in the meantime, you can check it out below.

Bandai Namco releases two new E3 2017 gameplay videos for Dragon Ball FighterZ

As the hype continues to mount for Dragon Ball FighterZ, and the excitement level has gone well over 9,000. Thankfully, Bandai Namco has released two gameplay videos that were captured during E3 2017. This gameplay footage gives us a better glimpse at what was revealed in the first look videos we got of the demo version. Whoever the players are controlling the teams in this new gameplay footage, they seem to have a decent grasp of the game’s combat system, and they pull off some of the most impressive combos we’ve seen thus far.

In addition to a few authentic battles, we also get a better look at the game’s cinematic elements — like the stage transitions, battle damage effects, win poses, and interactive sequences that occur when a new fighter takes the place of a fallen one.

Check out the two E3 gameplay videos below!

E3 developer panel showcases Dissidia Final Fantasy NT’s core mechanics and franchise history

Square Enix representative Mat Kishimoto got to have a nice long sit-down with the developers of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT at this year’s E3. Takeo Kujiraoka — the game’s director — and Ichiro Hazama — the producer — gave the lucky audience a fun and interactive look into their new fighter coming to PlayStation 4 in 2018.

With the translation aid of Aileen Matsuoka, the director-producer duo explained the inspiration behind the new 3v3 battle format, why teaming up with Team Ninja for their latest project was a great idea, and the reason behind why Dissidia Final Fantasy NT‘s UI/HUD is so bedazzling. Perhaps just as valuable as the updates on the franchise’s future is the breakdown of Dissidia’s core mechanics, since many fans have never had a chance to play the older portable-exclusive PSP titles that precede the arcade game.

The mechanic breakdown starts at 12:05, but if you’re seeking a thorough look into the perplexing world of Dissidia Final Fantasy, the full panel is well worth the watch.

Tekken 7 developers Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray talk tournament mode and character development

In the video below, Tekken developers Katsuhiro Harada and Michael Murray elaborate on Tekken 7’s tournament mode and it’s character development in two new videos from Bandai Namco. The two have both been working on the Tekken series for many years, and it’s interesting to hear them share the logic behind the decisions they make behind the scenes.

With Tekken 7’s tournament mode, Harada says he had players who have a “competitive spirit” but are not too fond of losing in ranked matches in mind. He hopes it can be used as a tool to facilitate a competitive environment that is not ruled by points or victories, but but the desire to challenge friends who enjoy the game just for fun.

In regard to character development, Harada and Murray both confirm that there are some characters they create that are intended for beginners to easily pick up and play, but the accessibility of these characters does not mean they don’t take skill to master or win tournaments with. Though balance is kept in mind during the development process, Harada points out that it is not a driving force behind a character’s creation, but rather a result of the sum of all of the elements that come together in a solid fighter.

It’s always great to get insight from developers–but you’ll be able to see the results for yourself When Tekken 7 hits the shelves on June 2nd. Check out our own review by Crow_Spaceboy here.

For the 2nd week in a row, Injustice 2 is the UK’s best-selling game

For two weeks now, Injustice 2 has held the #1 spot on the United Kingdom’s game sales’ charts, according to an official report from Ukie. The DC comics-casted brawler has seen a steady flow of sales since its release, and has proven to be worthy competition for contending titles such as Overwatch and Grand Theft Auto 5–the former having recently made a jump from 18th to the 2nd, and the latter remaining a sales giant since its launch.

You could attribute a part of Injustice 2’s success to the combined brand power of DC comics and NetherRealm Studios, which certainly fueled the initial allure of the title when the idea to create the Mortal Kombat-style super hero brawler was first hatched. But to go without mentioning the slew of positive reviews praising Injustice 2 for its combat mechanics, immersive story mode, and its expansive customization would be an injustice in itself.

As Game Rant justly points out, Tekken 7 releases on consoles next week–and a fighting game with a history and name recognition of its own could realistically impact Injustice 2’s chances to reign supreme for a third week. Regardless of where it stands among other new fighting game titles, Injustice 2’s performance in the UK is a win for the FGC in general.

Xuses compiles the most insane highlights from Red Bull Kumite 2017

The third edition of Red Bull Kumite was quite possibly the most hype installment yet. With the biggest Street Fighter V roster to date, a host of contenders including old favorites and new players we’ve come to know and love, and character selections that left possibilities wide open, there was much to take away from this annual showdown in Paris, France.

This highlight reel from Xuses captures some of the most insane moments from Red Bull Kumite 2017. There are so many energetic exchanges, it’s hard to say where to begin: clutch Sonic Boom loops from Twitch.Hx.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara, insane reads and reactions from RB|Luffy’s Mika, and outstanding performances from BX3|Phenom, AW|Nemo and RB… and that’s not even the half of it. There’s even a clip of Tokido telling Bonchan (in English) that he better not lose before he gets a chance to body him.

You can check out the Red Bull Kumite 2017 results here, and check out all of the intense replays in the video below.
