Damascus chats with Sven, a blind Street Fighter V competitor at Sonic Boom in Madrid, Spain

The top-placing players aren’t the only ones getting attention at Europe’s first Capcom Pro Tour stop.

Win or lose, overcoming a physical handicap to play the video games you love is certainly a noteworthy achievement in itself–and blindness is certainly a massive obstacle to competing in a fighting game. But losing his sight to cancer in his youth didn’t stop Sven van de Wege from learning to play Street Fighter–and other fighting games, too–by relying on sound instead of sight. He competed at the Sonic Boom event in Madrid, Spain this past weekend–and while he didn’t tear through the whole bracket, he still didn’t go 0-2, either!

Check out this interview with Sonic Boom commentator Damascus to get to know this Ken main a little better; you can see footage of his now-famous match in pools against Arkham|Musashi in the second video below.

You can see more footage of Sven’s now-famous winning match in pools in the video below:

Want to be judge at Evo 2017? Applications are now open!

Want to cover Evo? Media pass applications are open now, too.

Want to help run a bracket at the world’s biggest fighting game event? It’s a fantastic way to meet and interact with some of your favorite competitors, playing your favorite games–and help out the fighting game community as well. Applications are now open on the Evo site to put in your name to be a Tournament Judge at Evolution 2017.

The Tournament Judge role is a volunteer position, and is certainly hard work–but there are some nice perks. Food will be provided for the days you judge on, for all judges on Friday and Saturday–and judges also receive the official Tournament Judge T-shirt! Interested applicants should be familiar with a double-elimination bracket, and are required to provide their own transportation and lodging in Las Vegas.

If you are part of a media organization and want to cover the Evolution 2017 event, media badge applications are also now open. Head over to the application page to see if you are eligible for a media pass.

Evo 2017 is at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 14-16, 2017.

Circa eSports has officially announced that Christian “Forever King” Quiles is joining their team! Forever King has made quite the mark in both Injustice: Gods Among Us and Mortal Kombat XL, holding a spot within the top 5 worldwide for both of these NetherRealm Studios titles, based on the SRK rankings.

desk explores (and breaks) the limits of Street Fighter V’s juggle mechanics

A look into Street Fighter V’s juggling system, and how far it can be pushed.

Keeping your opponent’s character in the air with a series of hits is called “juggling”–well-known, of course, to the fighting game faithful. Most fighters have a built-in “juggle limit,” to prevent (or at least reduce) infinite juggle combos.

In their latest video, desk examines Street Fighter V’s own juggle system, using a Guile combo as an example: while SFV’s strict juggle limits won’t allow a Sonic Boom or a Somersault Kick to both connect after a juggle–only one, or the other–it will allow both attacks to connect if they happen to land on the same frame. Several setups that allow you to slip multiple attacks into the same frame this way are demonstrated by desk, below. Limits are made to be broken!

Evo Japan’s lead-up tournament [sài] will feature Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as its third event

Smash gets in on the action at the upcoming [sài] in Akihabara UDX.

Taking place at Akihabara UDX in Tokyo, Japan, [sài] is a smaller event to be held May 20-21, 2017 as a lead-up to the upcoming Evo Japan–in January 2018–at the same venue. Featuring tournament events for three titles, Tekken 7: Fated Retribution and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 were already confirmed; while many fans expected Street Fighter V to be event #3, it was announced soon after [sài]’s reveal that SFV would not be at the event.

It has now been revealed instead that the third game will be Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, officially bringing the Smash community into the event alongside Tekken’s and Guilty Gear’s faithful. It’s sure to be an exciting tournament!

Capcom announces M. Bison’s classic Thailand stage & new costumes for Street Fighter V at WonderCon

Another classic stage is almost here (finally!), along with three new Premium outfits.

Amidst the madness of April Fool’s Day, Capcom held their Street Fighter panel at WonderCon 2017 yesterday; it was confirmed that the long-awaited Street Fighter II Thailand stage that was first announced months ago (M. Bison’s, not Sagat’s!), is bound for Street Fighter V at the end of April.

The photo below from WonderCon (and the feature image above) show some of the stage and its details, though these are work-in-progress images.

Those that visited the CFN Portal site on April Fool’s Day got to see a new “Street Fighter Academy” quiz minigame, which featured new outfits for Chun-Li, Ryu, and Juri as different anime school character archetypes. It was also revealed at WonderCon that these costumes are indeed coming to Street Fighter V as future DLC, but no release date has been indicated yet.

Street Fighter Alpha Competitive Collection? BlazBlue: Central Fiction Extend? Nope–Happy April Fool’s Day

We couldn’t decide which “leak” to run this year, so we went with both.

Time to come clean: no, there is no BlazBlue: Central Fiction Extend planned (as far as we know), so don’t worry about having to drop any extra money on an update–yet. Arc System Works: if you’ve got something planned, don’t fear–your employees are still keeping your secrets. Maybe we’ll get a playable Jubei after all, someday…

As for Street Fighter Alpha Competitive Collection–sorry, this one was cruel, but because we want to see this become a reality so much ourselves, we couldn’t resist. We all would love to see an updated Alpha collection make its way to the current generation. Still hoping.

A number of gag ideas were deemed too downbeat to approach, despite how hot the topic–like the lack of any news on a Super Smash Bros. re-release for Switch, or the continued absence of Pokkén Tournament 1.5 on the Wii U; too harsh to pour salt into those wounds. Here’s a few more ideas that didn’t quite make the cut:

  • Capcom announces Hyper Street Fighter IV
  • Using the Ryu amiibo with Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers unlocks SFV mode
(which removes Arcade Mode and puts Evil Ryu & Violent Ken behind a paywall)
  • Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers will allow one-button special moves/supers
(with the reveal of touch inputs, might not be too far from the truth)
  • Dhalsim revealed as a DLC guest fighter for ARMS
  • Persona 5 Arena (maybe too soon…?)
  • Street Fighter X Darkstalkers
  • Street Fighter X Mortal Kombat
  • Street Fighter X Nidhogg
  • ARMS will be an event at the 2020 Summer Olympics

Until next year: we hope you had a fun April Fool’s Day!

The SRK Rollback: Best of March 24-30, 2017

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news–and our favorite SRK articles–from March 24 to March 30, 2017!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

Frame 1:
Byron TaylorHas Byron Taylor been “leaked” as the next DLC character for Street Fighter V?

… Probably not? But still… maybe? This leak-that-wasn’t-a-leak set the Street Fighter V community on fire, and without any word yet from Capcom on the next DLC fighter, who knows how true it is…?

Frame 2:
KOFXIV World Championships
Burn to fight: On-site at The King of Fighters XIV World Championships

We welcome our new Tokyo correspondent Jazz to SRK with his debut piece, giving us land-locked in the West a glimpse into the experience of what attending The King of Fighters XIV World Championships was like. Watch for more like this from Jazz still to come!

Frame 3:
2GGC Civil War
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s Civil War is put to rest at 2GGC: Civil War

At long last, Assistant Editor Trilby breaks down the huge Smash 4 event that the hype has been leading up to. Expect 2GGC to only get bigger and better from here.

Frame 4:
samurai shodown kuroko
MrBroken030’s “SS6 Slash and Bust” pushes Samurai Shodown VI combos to their limit

One of the best iterations of one of my favorite series gets some combo video love, and it’s worth every sword-swinging second of it.

Frame 5:
Sheng Long CFN banner
Sheng Long has become a living legend! Learn about his bizarre moves in the 800th CFN Portal profile

We have come full circle, and the cycle is complete: joke character Sheng Long–even after inspiring Gouken–has been officially recognized with his own CFN Portal profile page. Well, sort of. Have a fun April Fool’s Day, everyone!

Keegan “Interrobang!?” Spindler, Features Editor:

Frame 1:
KOF14-DLC-Charas-All-April-5The King of Fighters XIV version 2.00 launches April 5 with balance changes, 2 new stages, & all 4 DLC characters

Although the timing might not be the best personally–only a month before one of the UK’s only majors!–it’s incredibly exciting to see how SNK are continuing to support The King of Fighters XIV. Get me those DLC characters, stat!

Frame 2:
Scarecrow IJ2Captain Cold and Scarecrow join the Injustice 2 roster, with this new villainous trailer

Who doesn’t love a bad boy or two? NetherRealm have done a great job of keeping the hype rolling for Injustice 2’s upcoming release, and this villain trailer is no exception–especially since it announced two new characters.

Frame 3:
Go1Go1 talks to Shoryuken about Capcom Cup, his “King of Poverty” status, and more

Go1 is one of my favorite parts of the FGC. His story is rags to riches–once the King of Poverty, now duking it out on the biggest stages in the world. This interview with Missing Person is smart and interesting, and definitely worth a read.

Frame 4:
Rivals of Aether PackshotFacing the elements: A spotlight on the Rivals of Aether scene

There are a few upcoming fighters that aim to challenge Smash as the premier platform fighter around, but Rivals of Aether certainly stands out with its unique look and blistering speed. On the eve of its launch, our very own Trilby puts the spotlight on the scene that has already grown up around it.

Frame 5:
snk_eisuke_ogura_drawing_processGet a behind-the-scenes look at how SNK’s Eisuke Ogura creates art for The King of Fighters XIV

Although we often talk about how a game looks and feels, we seldom get the chance to look behind the scenes to see how those looks came to life. This is a great chance to see how artwork for one of the biggest titles in the FGC gets created.
