CenCal Standoff is back for a third year in Fresno, California on February 23-24, 2019, registration now open

Central California’s own face-off is coming back for another year of action!

CenCal Standoff is coming back to rock the California FGC with another tourney in Fresno: CenCal Standoff 2019 will run February 23-24 next year, and will this time feature tournament events in the following games:

  • Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ
  • Tekken 7
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Want to compete? Head over to the CenCal Standoff 2019 smash.gg page for more information, and to register. Pre-registration opened in September and extends to December 31, offering a reduced price and some extra swag.

Punk, Scar, and Theo are free agents after parting ways with Echo Fox

Some top players are now seeking new sponsors!

Some significant changes to the team lineup for Echo Fox have been revealed today. To start: Punk has been a familiar face in the upper brackets of any Street Fighter V tournament he enters; after a six-month run sporting the team colors for Echo Fox — having joined in March 2018 — Punk is once again a free agent.

And he wasn’t the only player to announce a change in sponsorship with the team today: Injustice 2 pros Scar and Theo have also revealed their departure from Echo Fox, via Twitter:

Players with as much talent as these competitors are sure to continue to make waves in the tournament scene, whether they are picked up by a new sponsor or not. Best of luck out there, guys!

Shogatsu and Daigo Umehara join the list of invites to compete in Super Street Fighter II Turbo at the Tournament of Power III

Two more Japanese legends are inbound to join the Super Turbo battle at Canada Cup!

There will be no shortage of excitement at the upcoming Tournament of Legends III at Canada Cup 2018 later this month — Super Street Fighter II Turbo fans are in for a real treat. After revealing their fifth Japanese invite to the event to be E. Honda grandmaster Shogatsu, Super Turbo Revival has also revealed that a sixth and final invite will be none other than Daigo “The Beast” Umehara.

From Super Turbo Revival:

Shogatsu is a multiple-time Gian Recital and Kakerugo Champion and also won the Canada Cup 3on3 tournament last year. He has also placed highly in a number of tournaments, including X-MANIA and Defend the North!

Daigo Umehara needs no introduction, as he is considered one of, if not the best Street Fighter players of all time! Daigo is a former Tougeki champion, a two-time former Evo Super Turbo champion and has won a number of majors across the US. He competed and finished fourth in the memorable TOURNAMENT OF LEGENDS I at Evolution 2012, falling to AfroLegends. He also competed in X-MANIA USA at Evolution 2014, teaming up with Nuki and Tokido in a great and entertaining match against Mike Watson, John Choi, and Alex Valle.

The Tournament of Legends III will take place at Canada Cup 2018 in Toronto on October 26-28. There is one qualifying event remaining before Canada Cup: East Coast Throwdown. Are anti-airs too weak in Street Fighter V? VesperArcade discusses the state of Street Fighter V’s neutral game

Jumping in is certainly stronger in Street Fighter V than many players would like.

VesperArcade is joined by Mir on this discussion video, in which they explore what needs to be improved about Street Fighter V‘s neutral game — this time specifically, they’re talking about anti-airs.

It’s widely agreed that anti-airs are too weak in Street Fighter V, either not damaging enough, or not setting up fortuitous situations for the defender; they certainly aren’t as threatening to potential jumpers as they could be. When a single landed jump-in combo can outstrip the damage from multiple successful anti-airs, the risk vs. reward system seems to be severely imbalanced in favor of offense. VesperArcade and Mir talk about what anti-airs work in SFV and which ones don’t, and what they hope to see changed for Season 4 — such as altered scaling rules to allow anti-air specials to hit harder, or heavy normals causing juggle states to allow for anti-air follow-ups.
