Capcom Connect streaming live from Esports Arena Oakland

Capcom’s new weekly livestream kicks off tonight!

Capcom’s new weekly streaming show Capcom Connect is starting its run tonight at 8:00 PM PT, streaming live from Esports Arena Oakland! Tune in at Capcom Fighters on Twitch.

The stream will feature event and news recaps, Street Fighter V matches with guest players, and art and cosplay from Street Fighter fans. You can also win content codes by viewing. From Andy Wong’s Capcom-Unity announcement:

You will have the chance to win various codes for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition just by watching and interacting with our social channels. In the afternoon before each show, we’ll tweet out a specific hashtag on the Street Fighter or Capcom Fighters Twitter account. All you need to do is use that hashtag in a tweet of your own before the drawing begins at around 8:15 PM PT. During the show, we’ll randomly choose winners and announce them on-stream. After the show, expect a Direct Message from the Street Fighter or Capcom Fighters accounts with your code. The codes are currently only for North America.

If you’re in the mood for over two hours of the theme that goes with everything, TheDarkAce has you covered. This compilation of the multiple versions of Guile’s iconic theme that originated in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior follows the music’s changes up to modern titles like Street Fighter V, and even includes remixes of the tune that were released outside of the games themselves.

If you are feeling more of a wandering warrior vibe, TheDarkAce also put together five (!) hours of Ryu’s theme.

The “Book of Souls” encyclopedia project from Uppercut Editions is the best Mortal Kombat book you haven’t read yet

When will we see this book made manifest in the Earthrealm?

The bloody and savage fantasy world that has developed around the Mortal Kombat franchise has many fans, but few are as passionate as those at Uppercut Editions, who have been working to get official backing behind their massive MK book project, the Book of Souls.

The book has gone through a few iterations (previously titled as the Book of Remembrance) but the goal (and the results) have been consistent: this is a massive collection of Mortal Kombat facts, lore, and trivia that the fans who love this world could easily become lost in. The 250+ page book covers the entire history of the franchise from its beginnings, up to and including Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2.

The catch is: this isn’t a published book, not yet. Uppercut Editions has been working to get their fan project some official backing from Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios, but to date that has not been accomplished. According to Uppercut Editions:

We are a group of MK fans who started this project 3 years ago with almost no support from WB and NRS, and only advice from a DC comics author, Shawn Kittelsen. While we contacted various publishers — Udon Entertainment, DK publishing, Prima Games, Insight Editions and some other smaller publishers — all who wanted to work with us, we couldn’t quite gain traction with WB. Our books currently sit inside NetherRealm Studios for review, and we need fan help to basically put pressure on them to make this for all MK fans.

The project started as a petition and surged to over 10,000 signatures and we even had Richard Epcar voice and record for our trailer we did.

The most recent version of the project is also viewable digitally over at Uppercut Editions itself. Mortal Kombat fans definitely should go check it out — and if you like what you see, spread the word.

Street Fighter V servers down for maintenance today, adding online Dojos, Halloween & Darkstalkers costumes

Lots of new content is coming for Street Fighter today.

It’s one of those Tuesdays for Street Fighter V: expect to see online functions shut down between 11:00 AM PT and 5:00 PM PT to accommodate some new stuff being added:

The stuff in question this time are a swath of Premium DLC costumes — offering a new selection of Darkstalkers outfits (for Chun-Li, Ed, and Menat again) and this year’s batch of Halloween costumes (this time for Guile, Abigail, Kolin, and Falke) — and the new Dojo system, which will allow players to team up in their own Dojos, along with their own customized Dojo stages.

The combo craziness continues in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy with these exhibitions from Combonauts and Persona Z

More examples of the madness that lies within this game engine.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy is definitely proving a good base for over-the-top crazy combos, as evidenced by its fans on YouTube. Combonauts is still hard at work going through the cast, this time offering a combo exhibition for Luong, and one for Samurai Shodown guest Nakoruru.

And Persona Z is joining in with their own take on Sylvie Paula Paula.

VesperArcade talks about the strengths and weaknesses of Street Fighter V’s President of the World, G

“Come, shake the hand of the President of the World!”

VesperArcade is back to take a good look at Street Fighter V‘s newcomer — not the King this time, but the President, G. As they were released on the same day, the comparisons are unavoidable… and VesperArcade has mostly positive things to say about G’s tools, declaring G’s V-Triggers to be better than Sagat’s, and going as far to say that G is outright the strongest character added in Season 3. He feels almost everything about G is well-designed at the least, and in some cases powerful enough to invite nerfs at most. G’s lack of a 3-frame normal and an invincible reversal are virtually the only complaints one can make about this President.

Mech Zangief returning to Street Fighter V as the next costume available in Extra Battle mode

The Protector of the Russian Skies has been upgraded.

Following Cammy’s foray into survival horror, Capcom is “switching gears” for the next unlockable costume in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition‘s Extra Battle mode.

It’s clear from the teaser image that Mech Zangief has seen some upgrades in his armor — and flight capabilities — since the costume’s last appearance (below) in Super Street Fighter IV as an alternate for regular ‘Gief. It also confirms Mech Zangief’s role as a Shadaloo-developed anti-Zangief weapon, made clear by the Shadaloo crest on robo-gief’s chest. Different versions of Mech Zangief appear as far back as Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter.

You can get started on collecting the four pieces of this costume in Extra Battle starting on September 27th. You’ll need to earn all four pieces over the next four weeks, and each attempt at each challenge will cost you 2500 Fight Money.

Tom Cannon offers insight on the classic Umehara vs. Valle Street Fighter Alpha 3 match and origin of “The Beast” with BornFree

A look back at earliest days of the East/West fighting game rivalry.

In 1998, Daigo Umehara came to Nickel City arcade in San Francisco (well, technically a ways south of San Francisco) to fight in the Street Fighter Alpha 3 World Championship — and ultimately faced off against Alex Valle in an East-West battle that has become legendary.

At SoCal Regionals 2018, BornFree took some time to watch the footage of this epic event with fighting game OG and Shoryuken co-founder Tom Cannon, who provides lots of insight into how the whole thing went down — because he was there!

Tom Cannon talks about the California competitive scene at the time, how little was know about Japanese players ahead of Umehara’s arrival in the USA — and how much of an achievement it already was for Valle to come out on top against all the other USA competitors before going up against Umehara. He also explains how, very shortly after this tournament, Daigo Umehara gained his title as “The Beast”!

A new show launches tomorrow to keep you in the Street Fighter loop.

Capcom has announced that a new stream show will launch tomorrow, September 25 — and continue weekly, on Tuesday nights — dubbed Capcom Connect, and it aims to provide a recap of new Street Fighter happenings alongside new content. The show will stream from Esports Arena Oakland, premiering tomorrow night at 8:00 PM PT on the Capcom Fighters Twitch channel.

See Android 17 in action in his Dragon Ball FighterZ reveal trailer; Halloween Z-Capsules arriving this week

The fan-favorite Android gets his own character slot very soon.

Not content to be a mere assist on a number of Android 18’s moves, Android 17 is coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ as a selectable fighter all his own. In the official reveal trailer below, Bandai Namco gives us a quick look at what the “MVP” of the Tournament of Power is bringing into the battle.

Android 17 and Cooler will be joining the roster in the DLC 4 pack in the near future. Dragon Ball FighterZ also arrives on the Nintendo Switch later this week, on September 28. Halloween-themed content (including stamps, alternate colors, and exclusive versions of lobby avatars) will also be appearing in Z-Capsules this week, starting September 26.
