Halloween costumes for Abigail, Falke, Kolin, and Guile are coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Capcom doubles-down on costume announcements today with four more seasonally-spooky outfits.

Not content to lead up to Halloween with spooky costumes from the Darkstalkers series, Capcom has also revealed that four more Halloween outfits are inbound to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition. Abigail becomes a rampaging cyclops, Kolin is a witch, Falke is now a goddess of death, and Guile joins the legions of the undead.

Like most premium costumes, these will run you $3.99 USD apiece. They’ll be creeping into the Shop alongside the new Darkstalkers Crossover Costumes on September 25th. If you missed a prior year’s Halloween outfits (or the “Spooky Arena” stage), Capcom is also offering them in bundles so you can catch up.

Even more of the darkness seeps into Street Fighter V‘s character selection screen.

Urien: Donovan costume
Juri: Lilith costume
Menat: Khaibit costume

Street Fighter V has already included three Darkstalkers Crossover Costumes for fans of the Night Warriors: back in March, Urien got a Donovan costume, Juri got an Lilith costume, and Menat dressed up as a Khaibit. But Capcom has just revealed that they aren’t done with the Darkstalkers outfits in SFV, not yet…

Coming September 25 (next Tuesday), Chun-Li gets Morrigan’s outfit, Ed dresses up as Demitri, and Menat gets a second Darkstalkers costume, as the catgirl Felicia. These premium costumes will run the usual $3.99 USD in the SFV Shop — or, for a limited time, you can get all six outfits in a bundle for $14.99. A better deal if you held off on any of the initial three costumes, certainly.

SNK announces Samurai Spirits for PlayStation 4

SNK shocked and delighted the FGC with the announcement of a new Samurai Shodown, coming in 2019. And it looks really promising. Will it stay true to the series’ methodical gameplay, or will this update cater to a different audience…?

Frame 3:

AtlasOne takes on the backlash of “Icons: Combat Arena” and how games must develop their own identity

A great discussion of the blurry line between homage and rip-off, and what gamers respond positively to when new titles spin out of prior concepts.

Bandai Namco gets the official confirmation out of the way (with an impressive trailer!), after the accidental reveal at Melbourne. They sure seem to have trouble keeping SoulCalibur characters under wraps!

Nobuyuki Kuroki confirms that new Samurai Shodown is being made by the same team as The King of Fighters XIV and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy

The new SamSho’s art style raised a lot of speculation about the developer, that seems to have proved unfounded. This is either encouraging or discouraging news, depending on your opinion of SNK’s last two releases.

Lethal League Blaze is coming to PC on October 24 and to consoles Spring 2019

I am surprised at how quickly this is coming out. Outside of that one concern, the Lethal League series is exceedingly good at the niche they’ve carved for themselves, and I’m excited to see how this new entry works.

Get started in Killer Instinct with novriltataki’s mini-guide for beginners

It’s never too late to pick up a quality fighting game.

Shin Hisako Killer Instinct

Killer Instinct may have suffered the most from the push of fighting games on to Sony’s platform; getting left behind when players and venues are focused on the PlayStation 4 instead of the Xbox One did the title no favors in growing a fanbase. It still did so despite this hurdle, now the game is available via Windows 10 or Steam — while it may not have cracked the PlayStation problem, it is certainly available to a much wider audience.

And it is for this reason that novriltataki has put together this mini-guide for newcomers to the game — not only to help new players pick up on Killer Instinct‘s distinct gameplay mechanics, but to also show those that haven’t tried the game what unique and interesting ideas the title has been brewing up while we have been distracted. With a big shout-out to the learning value of the game’s impressive Shadow Lab feature, novriltataki then proceeds to break down the game’s general systems and mechanics.

Frabisaur offers advice on getting the most out of your Street Fighter V replay viewing in the latest episode of The Fighter’s Dojo

A reminder that replays are potent learning tools!

One of the most useful tools for improvement in Street Fighter V (or any fighting game that offers the function, really) is reviewing your own replays, or watching replays of more-experienced players; it is also one of the most under-utilized. It can be hard for many players to feel they’re getting much out of just watching somebody play, and you’ve got to shelve the ego if you’re going to review your losses. But its value can’t be overstated — and Frabisaur is back to help you get the most out of your viewing time.

Episode 19 of The Fighter’s Dojo is all about making the most of your replays — and the pros’ replays, too! When choosing what to watch, Frabisaur reiterates that if improvement is your goal, there’s more to be gained by reviewing your losses than your wins, but sets where you won 2-1 are also very valuable, allowing you to look for how the opponent adapted to your first win, and what changed throughout the set. He also points out that is you’re watching replays in the Street Fighter V system, you have the ability to turn the input display on and see exactly what the button presses/lever inputs were, offering insight into execution and timing. Check out all of Frabisaur’s thoughts on this learning tool in the video below.

Aoba Miyazaki, producer of My Hero One’s Justice, talks to the PlayStation Blog about the development of the manga-based arena fighter

“We will continue to work hard to deliver to users what they are looking for.”

The PlayStation Blog caught up with My Hero One’s Justice producer Aoba Miyazaki to check in on the development of the manga adaptation ahead of its upcoming October 26 release. The producer offered some insights into bringing the world and characters of My Hero Academia into the framework of an arena fighting game; how to best work each Hero and Villian’s Quirks into the gameplay is of course central to the game, and according to Miyazaki:

Bakugou, Shoto, and All Might, the characters with rather “straightforward” Quirks were easier to develop. But the characters with the trickier Quirks took a lot of trial and error.

Obviously we didn’t want the power of the Quirks to be the only factor that impacts the outcome of battle, so we tried balancing out the characters by specializing them with either long range or short range strategies. This helped us strike a good balance and, at the same time, reproduce the situations of battle which occur in the manga.

Miyazaki goes on to describe how more unusual Quirks were very challenging to implement in-game, citing shape-shifting Toga as an example:

The most challenging character was Toga. Toga is able to transform into the opponent, but we obviously didn’t want her to copy the opponent’s Quirk Attacks, as that would not be faithful to the original works.

But in a VS game, visually transforming wouldn’t be much of an added value. So what we did was think of how the sidekicks would react if there were two identical characters. That’s why Toga’s attacks while transformation is focused on using the “opponent’s sidekick”, assuming that they would be tricked on which side to be on.

He also discusses his personal favorite Hero, the importance of including the Villians’ story, and what Quirk from the cast he would personally choose for himself (hint: climate control!). Read the full interview here.

How strong is the King? VesperArcade discusses Sagat’s strengths and weaknesses in Street Fighter V

“I have to be strong. That is the responsibility of the King.”

If you stop to think about it, Sagat is a Street Fighter archetype from a different breed of game: Street Fighter V‘s love of aggressive rushdown pressure across the roster is something a tried-and-true zoner like Sagat could either provide a breather from — or could drown in. It might just be a bit of both.

VesperArcade is a big fan of the King of Muay Thai, and after some time to get a feel for the latest version of Sagat, he offers his thoughts on what the character’s strengths are and in what areas the King is weaker. Lacking the close-up game that other SFV zoners like Guile and Menat can bring to the fight, Sagat must deal with fiddly Tiger Uppercut anti-air ranges and invincibility, while relying on mixed bag of really good-to-questionable normals and a useful but not spectacular V-System — fighting an “honest” fight in a game known for robbery.
