Indie fighter Divekick received its final patch today, which adds The Fencer of Nidhogg fame to the game’s playable cast. This content comes as free downloadable content to all previous owners of the title and will be rolling out across all platforms as the day progresses.

The Fencer wouldn’t be a fencer without his foil, so the folks at Iron Galaxy Studios have allowed him to use it in regulation Divekick matches. The catch is that the blade starts in the middle of the stage in a fashion identical to that of Cody’s knife in Street Fighter. Once The Fencer equips himself using his ground or air tumble, he can choose to launch the sword at opponents just like in Nidhogg. The blade covers a massive amount of screen space, but it stays where it lands through round transitions, so he has to make it count.

In the event of a mirror match, either player can use either sword, which will turn the tide of battle in the favor of whichever blocky fighter picks it up. If you somehow manage to defeat your sword-wielding opponent, the blade will transfer over to you.

And finally, once The Fencer hits Kickfactor, the “Go” indicator from Nidhogg appears on the screen, and he can secure victory by exiting the stage.

In a little over a week, players attending Sony’s PlayStation Experience will be able to get their hands on King of Fighters XIV. This latest installment of SNK Playmore’s lauded franchise marks the first time a mainline sequel has made the move to 3D graphics.

To get people hype for the game’s first playable appearance, the developers dropped a new trailer that, in addition to showing off some updated gameplay, confirms the return of Andy Bogard.

According to the leaked character list, Andy will likely be teaming up with brother Terry Bogard and Joe Higsashi, neither of which have yet to make appearances of their own. We’re sure to find out more when PlayStation Experience opens on December 5.

It’s no secret that this year’s Capcom Cup is going to be special. From the expansion of the finals bracket to the massive amount of money coming the champion’s way, Ultra Street Fighter IV may experience the greatest swan song the genre has ever seen.

Apart from that, however, what really makes this event one for the records books is the immense talent that’s already been gathered together to compete. A year of tournaments has seen fifteen competitors secure spots in the sixteen-player bracket, either through outright qualifiers or the accumulation of ranking points, and the near-final list is truly a sight to behold.

While obviously skewed towards its almost overwhelming Japanese presence, Capcom Cup will also see players from the United States, South Korea, Taiwan, France, Brazil, and more step onto the stage to represent their home countries. And discounting RZR|Infiltration’s mastery of a good portion of the cast, thirty separate characters have chances of making appearances over the course of the tournament.

Speaking of Infiltration, another interesting fact jumped out to us that’s likely been talked to death, and that’s the fact that every Evo champion since Street Fighter IV debuted in 2009 will be present at this event. Mad Catz’ Daigo Umehara is the only player so far to win two, but that doesn’t mean the Razer trio of Fuudo, Infiltration, and Xian, MeltDown’s Luffy, or Evil Geniuses’ Momochi (who won Capcom Cup last year) don’t have what it takes to take home the gold.

Stocking and pricing details for this release have yet to be revealed, but Capcom has mentioned they will announce them through community channels in the coming weeks.

Fans of fighting game music should be happy to hear that Brave Wave’s “Street Fighter II The Definitive Soundtrack” is now up for purchase online. This extensive project focused on remastering the iconic sounds of Capcom’s legendary fighter with help from original composer Yoko Shimomura.

The final release collects over 100 individual tracks, and is available in both physical and digital bundles. As of this writing, the vinyl collection is sold out, but project director Mohammed Taher has relayed to us that they plan to release a second pressing sometime next year. “This is not meant to be a collector’s item. Rather, we want all the Street Fighter fans to be able to buy it,” he explained. “We will keep making new pressings are long as there’s demand for it.”

Those of you not concerned with the vinyl release can pick up this soundtrack either in a three-disc CD bundle or as a digital album, both of which are available through Bandcamp. We’ve included a few previews below, so check it out and see if this is something you would be interested in.

It’s no secret that the airdasher or “anime” subgenre often receives the short end of the stick when it comes to fighting game events. While they’ve managed to maintain a dedicated following that continues to grow, you’d be hard-pressed to find major events that cater to their niche apart from efforts like Frosty Faustings or CEOtaku, the latter of which just kicked off this year.

Fortunately, Aksys Games is set to rectify this problem with Anime Ascension.

Scheduled for early next year, Anime Ascension represents the publisher’s attempt to put on a large-scale airdasher event of their own, in cooperation with Mad Catz, D-Link, and Fighting Gamers @ UCI. With an official lineup consisting of Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, BlazBlue: Chronophantasma EXTEND, and Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late, and an overall pot of $5,000, we think they’re definitely heading in the right direction.

Anime Ascension is scheduled for February 28 at the University of California Irvine. More details can be found on the official website.

The developers behind Killer Instinct continue to release updates ahead of its third season, and they will soon drop a patch that adds numerous HUD elements to the rebooted title.

While a lot of fighting game knowledge comes with experience and study, Killer Instinct’s updated display puts that data right on the screen to remove some of the guesswork. Now, players will know when they’ve perfected their reversals, combo breaker strength, and the length and type of lockouts. Iron Galaxy also plans to include a punish indicator in a future update.

There’s no doubt Killer Instinct has a lot going on in each match, and these additions will go a long way in providing useful information to players and spectators alike. Further patch details can be found in the official announcement.
