On the game’s first anniversary, Stumblebee explores the lead-up and reception of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Mahvel came back, but why did it fall to the wayside again so quickly?

Today is the first anniversary of the release of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Capcom’s latest addition to the Marvel Vs. series — and a game that proved divisive and disappointing to many fighting game fans. For all the things that Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite did well, it was overshadowed by the absence of classic characters, troubled PR and presentation, and the problematic Battle for the Stones circuit. When MvC:I didn’t make it to the main stage for Evo 2018, much of the community took that as the official sign the game had failed; as untrue as that is, it seems to accurately reflect the predominant attitude toward Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite. However, the Evo side tournament still brought in 128 players, and despite the rhetoric that the game is “dead”, it still has a dedicated community that enjoys playing it.

To mark today’s occasion, Stumblebee has prepared this look back at the launch and reception of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, asking the question: “Why Did It Bomb?” The video explores the early reveals for the title, the big fails during the lead-up (see: Chun-Li’s face, “functions”), and the course the game took after launch, alongside its blockbuster competitor Dragon Ball FighterZ. Though Stumblebee’s video title is harsh, he’s a professed fan of the series, and actually thinks Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite got more of a raw deal than it deserved. Check it out below (some language is NSFW).

Nintendo Switch Online service is now available, will be required for online multiplayer in ARMS & Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Nintendo’s foray into a paid online service subscription has begun.

Nintendo Switch users can now buy into Nintendo’s new online subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online. It launched last night, after a minor delay.

The service offers a number of perks: cloud game saves (but don’t let your subscription lapse), integration with a smartphone app for chat, access to special offers, and a playable library of NES classics — but the primary reason to pick up the service is that many games utilizing online multiplayer will require it, including (most notably for fighting fans) games such as ARMS, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate when it drops in December.

Users can try a 7-day trial, or buy right into an auto-renewing subscription ($3.99 USD for 1 month, $7.99 USD for 3 months, or $19.99 USD for a whole year). A “Family” pricing plan is also available if you want to include multiple user accounts. More details are available on Nintendo’s official site.

Tekken 7 Season 2 roundup: Feng links to wall bounce, Anna tech traps, and more!

New mechanics, new characters, new combos, new everything. There’s an impossible amount of Tekken 7 Season 2 content to wade through, so we’re here to share what’s shown up on our radar in one giant post. We’ve been doing this for a bit now, if you want to go back and see some of our previous posts. Otherwise, let’s jump in to today’s Tekken Tech!

Starting us off is STL1119. The Combo-Making King might also be King of the Cross-Under, as Volume 10 of his ongoing combo series focuses heavily on this difficult, creative juggle quirk.

J King might try to tell you that King’s back-turned state limits his juggle potential after a Season 2 wall bounce, but his latest combo video tells a different story.

strider0317‘s just doing 119 damage off a safe counter-hit long range mid without walls. You know. No big deal.

The ability to link from Feng’s WS1+2 was always good, but the addition of wall bounce certainly spices things up, doesn’t it?

Speedkicks shows off some questionable hurtbox discrepancies for Master Raven.

And closing out today is TekkenAtaraxia, who shows off a disgusting tech roll catch off of Anna’s FC df+2 sweep.

Thanks to everyone that submitted content to us! If you have some Tekken 7 tech you’d like to share with the world, reach out to us through our tipline.

Armada has retired from single-player fighting in Super Smash Bros. Melee

“I feel like if I can’t have fun doing it, then there’s no point in doing it.”

Adam “Armada” Lindgren, known as one of the “gods” of Super Smash Bros. Melee, released this video yesterday, stating that he would no longer be participating alone in tournaments:

Armada has built an incredibly successful career of singles play — almost every major tournament featuring Melee has seen him in top 8, and several have titled him champion. Though, regardless of skills or legacy, Armada’s motivation to play is the most important factor of his involvement, and, as discussed in his video announcement, that motivation has been absent for over a year.

This isn’t the first time the Swedish Sniper has grown distaste in singles, either. Long-time followers will remember Armada’s previous retirement in 2013, following that year’s Apex tournament. Though the Melee world saw Armada come back a year later, it’s clear now that distance from the scene has remained on his agenda.

It should be noted that Armada still plans to compete in 2v2 tournaments for Melee, saying that “teams and singles have always been two very different games.” In addition to team play, he also showed interest in continuing to commentate singles matches. 13 years of play is a very long history for a single fighting game, and Armada has expressed that he definitely won’t be leaving all of that history behind.

Though this chapter of his career may be over, there can only be brighter days for Armada as he goes on. Taking control of his own life outside of Melee was surely a difficult move to make, but, in Armada’s own words, “it’s about time.” Whether he takes his skills to the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or not, I’m personally glad that Armada’s involvement with Smash will never take precedence over his own mental health.

PlayStation Classic mini-console announced, comes pre-loaded with 20 games — including Tekken 3

Following in the footsteps of companies like Nintendo, Sega, and SNK, Sony has just announced a retro miniature console of their own. The PlayStation Classic launches this December, and comes with a number of PlayStation games.

The PlayStation Classic takes on the form factor of the original PlayStation console, but is 45% smaller. When it launches in December 3, it will come pre-loaded with 20 classic PlayStation titles, including Namco’s Tekken 3.

The inclusion of Tekken 3 should come as no surprise, as the series was synonymous with PlayStation during the 1990s. Other titles that have been confirmed to be pre-loaded into the PlayStation Classic include Final Fantasy VIIRidge Racer Type 4Wild Arms, and Jumping Flash.

What’s interesting about this announcement is that these titles are described as “pre-loaded”, which seems to imply the possibility to purchase and load more games into the PlayStation Classic, an ability that’s missing from the existing mini consoles on the market. We’ll likely learn if this is the case once the remaining 15 titles are announced in the near future.

The PlayStation Classic is now available for pre-order in the US and Canada for $99.99 USD or $129.99 CAD. Included in the package are USB cable for power, HDMI cable, and 2 classic-styled controllers. [Those that were hoping for Dual Shock controllers: the original PlayStation didn’t include them, the feature was introduced later in the PlayStation’s run. So it appears the focus in this collection will only be on the early pre-analog titles. Maybe a future upgrade will be possible? We’ll see. – Editor]

Online community Dojos are coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition on September 25

Obviously, the Saikyo-ryu dojo will be the strongest one.

A lot of new SFV content is coming on September 25! Along with new Darkstalkers and Halloween costumes, Capcom just revealed a new “Dojo” feature on Shadaloo C.R.I., Capcom’s official source of SFV information updated by the development team.

Every player who syncs their SFV account on the official Shadaloo C.R.I. website and joins a Dojo will receive a new Dojo stage for free! The free Dojo stage starts off with the look of a traditional martial arts dojo with an open area, wooden accents, and rays of light shining through the windows. However, you can customize the Dojo stage to fit your personal preferences! Once you have joined a Dojo, you will have access to your Dojo menu, which allows you to customize your personal stage with a large variety of objects that can be unlocked — such as vehicles, instruments, sports items, plants, statues, and much more. You can obtain Dojo stage items in a variety of ways, but most of them have specific unlock requirements, such as ranking high in the Dojo rankings, or getting them through a separate set of readings in Menat’s Fighting Chance.

What is a Dojo exactly?

A Dojo is a community hub with a Grand Master and Dojo members. The person who creates the Dojo will automatically become the Grand Master, but that title can be handed over to another member if they do not wish to be the leader. Upon creating the Dojo, the Grand Master can name the Dojo, set the Dojo emblem, write an introductory blurb about the Dojo, set the maximum number of members, set who can approve a member application, and even create a flyer to attract members!

You can only apply for one Dojo at a time. You can search for them under a player’s Fighter ID, the Dojo ID, or other conditions. After joining a Dojo, you can view a list of Dojo members and their profiles, their favorite characters, the Dojo rankings. You can even link your Dojo to your Twitter account.

There are also Dojo rankings. In the main Dojo menu, you can view “Member Ranking” to see how all members stand in the dojo. Every member will automatically have points applied to them upon playing Arcade, Survival, Extra Battle, Ranked Match, Casual Match, and Battle Lounge; the more you play, the more points you’ll get. Every point obtained by every member will factor into the larger Dojo rankings where all Dojos are displayed on a leaderboard. If your Dojo ends each month as one of the top ranks, everyone in that Dojo will receive a special decorative object to show off. The Dojo rankings will begin in October 2018. Check out Capcom-Unity for more details.

Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, and Slifer the Sky Dragon make an appearance in Jump Force, plus SSGSS Goku confirmation

Yami Yugi’s famous Duel Monsters are summoned into Jump Force as special moves.

After Yami Yugi’s announcement for the upcoming manga-brawler Jump Force, many were curious as to how the King of Games would take to battle. Bandai Namco Entertainment answered this question by releasing screenshots of the Pharaoh alter-ego with three of his most signature monsters, the trusty Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl, alongside the Egyptian God Card, Slifer the Sky Dragon.

It won’t be long until a trailer is released showing how Yami Yugi battles with his Spell cards and monsters, but until then, check out these duel-tastic screens below. Take notice of the design of the physical cards themselves — they are designed just like they were in the original manga with the red and black print.

In other Jump Force news, stay on the lookout for Goku’s bluest transformation. Bandai Namco Entertainment teased and confirmed the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue) form to be included in Goku’s skillset, but there hasn’t been any gameplay showing how the anime icon powers up beyond his traditional yellow-haired look. Hopefully, this means Vegeta will also be able to transform into SSGSS, he’s not very happy whenever he’s shown up by his biggest rival.

In the meantime, Bandai Namco Entertainment released promotional art showcasing the title’s big three characters, Son Goku, Monkey D. Luffy, and Naruto Uzumaki in their powered-up forms.

Get your deck ready and keep your power levels focused for more information. Tokyo Game Show 2018 is just beginning, and there are sure to be more announcements to come. Jump Force releases in 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

desk releases video #3 in the “10 Combos That Will Never Happen” series, featuring the unstun glitch

Street Fighter YouTuber desk is known as an combo innovator with some of the most absurd technical execution in the fighting game community — so if he thinks a combo is impractical, you better believe him.

That’s the hook of his “10 Combos That Will Never Happen” series, whose third iteration you can watch in the video above. All the usual desk combo features show up — elaborately spaced fireball sequences and confirms off trades mid-combo. What makes part 3 special among this series is its feature of the recently discovered “unstun” glitch — which, if you haven’t seen it yet and are baffled by the example above, you should read up on this fascinating bug here.
