Slap the snot out of your opponents with Sailor Mars and her cross-under throw setups in Sailor Moon S

Sailor Mars has always been a corner monster in Sailor Moon S. She has fireball traps that she can abuse and use to predict jumps with her high fireballs. She can also set up unblockables as Player 2, if someone techs her heavy kick throw in the corner. But she also has gimmicks involving her untechable heavy punch throw.

Against tall characters such as Sailor Jupiter, Sailor Uranus, and Sailor Neptune, Mars can cross-under them off of her heavy punch throw. By implementing a neutral jump closer to their wakeup, you can set up a 50/50 mix-up where you either stay in the corner, or cross them up depending on the timing of the jump.

Learn Piccolo’s core combos with this tutorial for Dragon Ball FighterZ

Piccolo has damage output problems in his current state in Dragon Ball FighterZ — this has been proven emphatically. His mid-screen game leaves a lot to be desired, as he is hampered more than the rest of the cast on his damage output, unless he is in the corner. Further, he needs more help from assists than any other character to get similar damage output to the top tier characters.

For those brave enough to venture into using the character, there are still ways around his handicaps to make him work. This combo tutorial by rooflemonger shows off his capabilities, and how to make him a dangerous threat on any team.

Video overview teaches the pros and cons of using Ramlethal in Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2

While Dragon Ball FighterZ is the current Arc System Works game that’s enjoying most of the spotlight, there’s a chance newcomers to their games might be willing to also try picking up Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2. Generally considered rather intimidating, it’s not as easy to pick-up-and-play this game compared to some — but it can be very rewarding anyway.

Apolo Loussalier wants to help out that crowd, and has started posting character introduction videos for the zany Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 cast. The first one features his own main character, Ramlethal Valentine: a setplay-oriented warrior who uses two special swords in battle. The video starts out by listing out Ramlethal’s strong suits. With her sword at her side, she has very good pokes and anti-airs at her disposal, and a quick counter-hit can lead to a full combo. When she places the weapons around the stage, she has access to some slower and faster attacks that cover a large area and are particularly dangerous with a YRC. Ramlethal also has very good corner-carry, and she shines particularly when the opponent’s back is against the wall.

As for the weaknesses, she lacks a reversal move — but she isn’t completely defenseless. She can take advantage of the many system mechanics in the game that helps with defense, like back-dashing, Blitz Shielding, Bursting, and throwing.

See how Lucario synergizes with every assist Pokémon in Pokkén Tournament DX

Pokkén Tournament DX‘s Lucario has all the privileges typically afforded of a box-art protagonist. It has a versatile move set, decent damage, and very powerful use of the game’s flagship Burst Mode. A sometimes overlooked aspect of this character, though, is the incredible synergy (please pardon the pun) it has with the game’s assist system.

Because of Lucario’s juggle options, it can convert practically into high-damage assists off of many of its tools. If you’ve ever felt unsure of how to incorporate an assist in Pokkén, there’s really no reason not to give Lucario a try. As with everything else about this character’s design, it is built to show off the way the mechanics of this game works, and that includes assists.

desk pushes the limits of Noctis’ juggles in Tekken 7

If Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis is built to be easy-to-play in Tekken 7, is there really potential in his moveset for a flashy combo video to be made? If anyone can answer that question, it’s safe to say it’s going to be the combo king himself: desk.

desk‘s solution to this problem is to find creative ways to push Noctis’s juggle scaling to the limit. Dash jabs, cancel-less jump 2s, Jump 2 loops, and more are just a few of the ways desk pushes the Prince beyond his design limits.

BornFree interviews Brian F about changes in fighting game design and balance in Street Fighter V

BornFree’s interviews from Final Round 2018 continue, this time with UYU|Brian F. The conversation covers Street Fighter VDragon Ball FighterZ, and accessibility of fighting games.

The two open up by talking about how developers want to make their games easier to approach and thus enjoyed by a larger audience. Brian F stresses that this doesn’t make a game necessarily “easier,” but he notes a trend where execution is more streamlined. He also notes that things like auto-combos won’t help players much in the end. “DBFZ is really easy to play,” he says, “but if someone’s better than you, you don’t get to play.” One key factor he points out that’s important to casual players is good matchmaking, which should prevent lower-ranked players from facing opponents with much greater skill level.

Around minute 19:00, the discussion switches to the “Abigail problem” in Street Fighter V: The Arcade Edition. Brian F advises players to just keep playing, and dislikes when people discredit competitors based solely on their character choice.

Enjoy the insightful interview below!

BornFree has also recently interviewed Kazunoko and Nakkiel.

Tianhuo burns with rage in this combo tutorial for Them’s Fightin’ Herds

Them’s Fightin’ Herds may lack a large roster characters at the moment with its Steam Early Access release, but there’s a load of depth to this new title that begs to be uncovered. Much like many anime-style fighters, the title is very combo heavy, and has a variety of hit confirms into magic series combos followed up by launches.

Tianhuo boasts all of the above in this combo video, which serves as a visual aid for her bread and butter combos. As such, the combos range from simple to advanced, all of which seem practical in the competitive landscape. Mastering these could definitely give you a hoof up on the competition.
