Check out a ton of new BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle footage from the 2018 Taipei Game Show

With the recent reveal of a release date, as well as the announcement that Team RWBY’s Blake Belladonna and 19 other characters would be joining the roster of the upcoming BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle, many fans have been looking to see and hear more about the four-way crossover title.

Last weekend, BBTAG made appearances at both Evo Japan and the 2018 Taipei Game Show in Taiwan, with the full 20-character base roster available for players, giving us a healthy amount of new footage of the entire cast to share with you.

In our first video, we see our four main protagonists do battle, as Under Night In-Birth’s Hyde Kido and RWBY’s Ruby Rose unite to battle BlazBlue’s Ragna The Bloodedge and Persona 4 Arena’s Yu Narukami on one of the new original stages revealed in the most recent trailer. Initially, we can hear that Ruby has a new (or perhaps additional?) character theme. In previous builds she used Red Like Roses Part 2, whereas this new theme sounds like a mix of Red Like Roses Part 1 and the Volume 1 Opening Theme, This Will Be The Day. Resonance Blaze now has an on-screen timer of 15 seconds when all four blocks of the Cross Gauge are filled, and will now turn the screen blue when activated, similar to Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite’s Infinity Storms, though it remains to be seen if only one team can have the mechanic active at a time.

Our second match sees Weiss Schnee and Linne face Noel Vermillion and Yukiko Amagi on the newly-revealed Altar stage from BlazBlue. We can also see that Distortion Finishes now change the background into the diamond motif, featuring the signature colors of all four franchises.

We’ve also got two more videos, showing off a bit of play with all 20 cast members, with a variety of teams and stages, though the uploader mainly stuck to the duo of Weiss and Hazama for the majority of matches. We can also see that the Under Night quartet now each possess a second Distortion Skill like the rest of the cast, and are no longer solely limited to their Infinite Worths. The attacks appear to be Hyde’s Pale Bringer, which now lacks the usual kick ender, Linne’s Force Function, Waldstein’s C version of Sturmangriff and Gordeau’s EX Mortal Slide.

Lastly, movelists for 16 characters were spotted at Evo Japan, though they’re currently lacking translations. You can see everything below, including a write-up of one player’s thoughts on the TGS build, below.

toco toco catches up with famed Street Fighter II animator Akira “Akiman” Yasuda

The character designs of Street Fighter II are iconic — but for many, we forget the people behind the works we continue to enjoy today. But for people who appreciate the art of video games, Akira Yasuda — better known as Akiman — is probably one of the most iconic artists in fighting games, as he is the man behind the designs of characters such as Cammy, Guile, and of course Chun-Li (and many of her Street Fighter V costume additions).

In this interview, he talks of his time at Capcom and his reasons for leaving — which has a bit to do with his time at Rockstar, working on Red Dead Revolver. He also talks about his life since leaving Capcom, which sees him as freelance animator.

Dr. Hyde and Radegonda duke it out in this new Omen of Sorrow Evo Japan build footage

As we previously covered, Omen of Sorrow was at Evo Japan with a brand new build. The build in question featured a bunch of new characters who weren’t available in previous public builds. Now, for those who weren’t at the event, AOne games has dropped a new gameplay video showing a couple of those characters in action.

The video below features a match between Dr. Hyde and Radegonda. Dr. Hyde, as discussed in our previous coverage, is a hybrid between a zoner and a grappler. He uses chemical vials (with various effects) to keep his opponents away, while punishing any attempts to get in with a command grab. Radegonda, on the other hand, uses her wings to take to the air and attack with various dives and rushes. We’ve already covered how punishing Dr. Hyde’s zoning can be in the right hands; Radegonda’s mobility seems like she’d be the perfect counter for this.

Get crazy with these impractical Blazblue: Central Fiction combos

Blazblue: Central Fiction, much like other anime fighters, has a lot of depth and mechanics that lend themselves to creating unique and difficult-to-perform combos. Even some bread-and-butter combos are entirely situational, and can thus be difficult to pull off every time.

With these combos, we see the cream of the crop in impracticality! With liberal usage of rapid cancels, we see multiple characters — including Susano’o, Valkenhayn, Hazama, and Terumi – -pushing the Blazblue combo system to its absolute limits.

Jean pounds through walls in this Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown combo video

It’s so rare that we see new Virtua Fighter content nowadays! The series has laid dormant since Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown released on consoles in 2012, and Sega has so far shown little interest in reviving the project. However, today we are greeted with a combo video for Jean in VF5. A character new to the series in Final Showdown, he was overshadowed by the return of sumo wrestler Taka-Arashi in the same title, but holds his own in this combo video. This features not only standard combos, but combos started from back-turned states, which makes for some interesting variety.

How much did Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition nerf V-Trigger damage scaling? Take a look at the numbers

One of the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition universal system changes is a nerf to V-Trigger damage scaling. During Season 2, a lot of players complained about characters like Ibuki, Balrog, Urien, and Laura stealing rounds with easy V-Trigger confirms into big damage. Activating V-Trigger during a combo will now add an additional layer of damage scaling, making all hits after activation do ten percent less damage than they did in Season 2, reducing their comeback potential.

In addition to increased damage scaling, Capcom also added some character-specific nerfs, like lowering the damage on Akuma’s V-Trigger Goshoryuken, preventing Balrog from comboing crouching heavy punch after his crouching medium kick target combo, and adding a juggle limit to Ibuki’s bomb. Due to scaling, combos from activation lose about 40 to 60 damage and stun compared to season 2, though it can vary between characters. Urien seems to be the character most impacted by the scaling nerf, because each hit of Aegis Reflector adds to the scaling but does low damage.

Because of this, characters like Menat, Urien and Guile who get a specific amount of resources during their V-Trigger may want to go for an easier combo with similar damage to keep their trigger active. While it may be harder to score easy damage with the old standard combos, Capcom has also opened up new combo routes for much of the cast with V-Trigger II and other changes. And as always, Critical Arts have a maximum scaling of 50 percent, so VT combos confirming directly into CA will still pack a big punch. Be sure to get in the lab and find new ways to punish your opponents and push your damage to the brink!
