NorCal’s StrongStyle 6 trailer boasts world-class talent, website hints at side events for retro Tekken titles

Unlike many other majors, StrongStyle is not a yearly running event. That’s because StrongStyle holds its allegiance to one series only, and that’s Tekken. With the arrival (and success) of Tekken 7, StrongStyle is geared up for its 6th iteration, and there’s some big names coming along:

In addition to the star-studded cast of JDCR, Saint, Jeondding, Jimmy J Tran, Jackiller and more, there’s another announcement buried in the blog of StrongStyle’s website. The tournament organizers are looking to run some side events for previous Tekken entries, and they’ve been floating ideas from Tekken 5: Dark Ressurrection to Tekken 3’s “Tekken Ball” mode. While no official announcement has been made yet on what the “Mystery Tekken” game will be, judging by the registration page there will be at least one non-Tekken 7 game on the floor.

Players wanting to clash with the best in the world can head on over to Eventbrite to register. The event is scheduled for February 10th-11th.

Dragon Ball FighterZ roundup: Health regeneration statistics, Beerus combos, basic team-building guide, and more!

It’s probably no surprise that a game like Dragon Ball FighterZ continues to pour a deluge of new content to our inbox, at a much greater rate then nearly any other game release we’ve seen. Much like the game it clearly draws inspiration from (Marvel vs. Capcom 2), DBFZ is a sandbox of combo possibilities and nuanced system mechanics. That it’s for one of the most beloved, nostalgic franchises of all-time probably doesn’t hurt, either.

Let’s check out what the FGC cooked up today!

superscience890 breaks down the health regeneration properties of DBFZ.

Persona Entertainment brings their first combo videos to the list with their Vegeta and Goku Black videos.

rooflemonger has two guides for us today: tips and tricks for Android 21, and a team-building guide for beginners.

Peter Souvannarath breaks down the various properties of the Sparking Blast comeback mechanic.

Speaking of Sparking, here’s an example of what it can do for you: Tien’s “touch of death” courtesy of KOG Productions.

Love Android 18? If you want to learn her Robotic ways, FightersLegend‘s video is a great primer. Once you have an understanding of how she (And her pseudo-assist, 17!) works, check out Glideadon‘s Snapback setup!

And closing us out is Y. Xiao. Beerus has been one of the least-submitted characters here at SRK and, based off what I’ve seen both here and beyond, I’m not sure why. He has big damage, wild okizeme, and the most smug face this side of West City. If you want a sneak peek on what a God of Destruction brings to DBFZ, this is a great place to look:

As always, if you see anything worth sharing, let us know by submitting a tip for our next roundup. Thanks everyone!

Pokkén Tournament DX DLC roundup: Aegislash combos, Rotom buffs, Mimikyu guard breaks, and more!

Pokkén Tournament DX‘s first wave of DLC was just released, and with it came a major balance patch. The focus of the community is certainly on the new character Aegislash, but as you’ll see in today’s video roundup, there’s plenty of new tech for the existing cast to mess with, too.

First order of business: Aegislash comes equipped with “Just Frames” that almost certainly reference Namco’s sword-slinging Greeks, SoulCalibur’s Sophitia and Cassandra.

And while that helps his damage output to an extent, the real juice comes when Aegislash gives himself buffs from stance-switching. These buffs increases not only his damage output, but give him access to new strings.

Stance switching is the very core of this character. It also serves as a means of which to activate traps, such as this Mist trap.

It’s easy to see how Mist setups can potentially steal entire rounds off just a single knockdown.

Aegislash’s low stance may prove to be troublesome for characters with a lack of true mids.

Not everything in Pokkén Tournament DX 1.2 involves a sword-ghost, though. Let’s not forget other characters received some charity this patch. Players are understandably worried about Weavile’s belligerent new Field Phase j.X cancel…

…but every character can benefit from the surprising new powerhouse that is Rotom, which now restands and activates quicker.

Let’s not forget that there’s also brand new supports to play with. Check out this guard break setup for Gardevoir/Mimikyu:

…and, in closing, Magikarp is better now. I doubt this is meta-changing, but it’s there. Go crazy.

More Dragon Ball FighterZ datamining reveals details on additional modes and DLC characters

Earlier this week, we reported on a set of additional (datamined) Lobby Avatars for Dragon Ball FighterZ that strongly implicate the potential identities of the eight upcoming DLC characters that will be included in the FighterZ Pass, as well as some evidence of new game modes: Z-Union, Z-League and Raid Battle. SergioM3 has since released a series of additional videos, revealing some more details on these upcoming modes — that will likely inhabit the currently-empty areas of the Kame House and West City in the game’s lobby menu.

Having recently come across the explanation text that will appear when entering these modes, we can see that there will be individual Z-Unions for every single character in the game, which we can join in order to gain special character-related items which will increase in rarity and value over time. Joining a Union will also allow players to battle in the Z-League, a monthly competition between the various character Unions, which seems similar to Mortal Kombat XL’s Faction Battles, with the Z-League standings being viewable on the normal Ranking board currently in the game. However: you will be removed from your Z-Union if you don’t compete in at least one Ranked Match per month.

In regards to Raid Battles, the text found reads, “Enemy incoming! A Raid Battle will be kicking off soon. Expect to cross paths with only the fiercest of foes. Train up and prepare, you’re going to need it. Fierce foe spotted at the southeast lobby island! Get in on this Raid Battle, active now! Join forces with other players and take this titan down!” (This leads me to believe it could be similar to the Raid Battles against powerful CPU opponents found in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.)

Fellow dataminer Mizumi appears to have found character models for the heavily-rumored “base” Goku and Vegeta, both based on their Saiyan Saga appearances, as well as an announcer callout for the selection of Cooler, another name speculated to be in the FighterZ Pass.

Finally, DasVergeben — who has leaked details on several different fighting games in the past — recently chimed in about this on reddit, saying, “I heard back from my main 2 sources and wanted to know if this is legit and some just aren’t avatars only, and they back up that the season 1 characters are obviously the 4 characters they leaked to be previously that I shared with you (Broly, Bardock, Base form Goku, and Base form Vegeta) and that Vegito, Fused Zamasu, Cooler, and 17 are the others. Zamasu is a bonus avatar that comes along with Merged Zamasu. Super Saiyan Broly comes as a lobby avatar with Broly, same with Bardock and Vegito with their two different forms. So there you have it.

The outlier source I mentioned before who knew about Raditz and Zarbon (that I was openly shaky on) said that “Raditz and Zarbon are season 2 characters. So you can take that with a grain of salt. Though I guess it would make sense why the other 2 didn’t know or hear about them if so. But whatever.”

You can see all of the videos below, but be sure to keep a little skepticism in mind until we get some kind of official confirmation!

What do you think of all of this information? Are you looking forward to these modes, and possible DLC characters, or do you wish it was a completely different set entirely? Let us know in the comments.

ESAM discusses where Super Smash Bros. for Wii U can potentially go, without ZeRo at the helm

No one within the Smash community will ever argue against ZeRo’s impact on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, as the man has left a lasting legacy as the best player to ever play the game. The question — after his retirement — thus becomes: Now what?

ESAM believes that his retirement has blown the game wide open, as players will now be fighting to take over the number one spot on the Panda Global Rankings list — an honor ZeRo has held since the list’s inception. He also expresses hope that ZeRo will step into a role of commentary or analysis — in the belief that as the best, he will be able to make high-level observations that other commentators miss.

How has the face of Super Smash Bros. Melee changed since Plup’s win at Genesis 5?

Much like the Five Gods of Japanese Street Fighter, there has been an agreed-upon list of Five Gods of Melee, and rarely has that status been challenged. As early as 2016, Hungrybox was alluding to an era where there would be a larger pool of players that would be capable of being killers in the game, and this year marked steps further in that direction, with Plup winning at Genesis 5.

So is the era of the Smash gods dead? As spoken about in this video, it’s possible that we’re seeing the tides turn in favor of more players becoming world-class enough to take majors — and Plup and Leffen are the first out of the gate to challenge the notion of five untouchable players in the game.

VesperArcade breaks down Urien’s V-Trigger II bug in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Last week saw the reveal of a huge Urien bug, in which his hurtboxes are removed upon usage of his second V-Trigger. This potentially looked game-breaking, but ultimately made little impact on the first tournament since its discovery at Evo Japan — where no Urien players found themselves in top 8.

Regardless, VesperArcade has made a video detailing how the bug is reproduced, which allows the lost hurtboxes to remain missing for 40 frames after he recovers, if Urien pushes no buttons after performing a V-Trigger tackle. Here’s hoping that Capcom will fix this bug soon!

Dragon Ball FighterZ roundup: 2H scaling, Android 16 block pressure, Golden Frieza loops, and more!

Who’s ready for more Dragon Ball FighterZ gameplay? Despite the (lovingly) sarcastic answer of “Not Namco,” DBFZ continues to dominate the minds (and social media feeds) of the FGC. As usual, the more people play the more they discover, and we have just some of those discoveries right here. Let’s jump into today’s submissions!

Leading today is jmcrofts, who covers some system mechanics not taught in DBFZ’s training mode, such as reflect properties and Level 3 DHC’s.

GLHFtv breaks down jump cancel scaling vs. 2H combo filler.

Here’s an absurdly powerful juggle loop for Golden Frieza from Victor Thammavong.

CDV|WhiteBl4ck shows off the giant damage of Goku Black.

As usual, Clayton “Final Showdown” Chapman has some flashy and powerful combos to show off. Check out the Frieza fireball loops, in particular!

Hit’s unusual moveset means he has to take some different combo routes to get decent damage. As Warui Neko-kun shows, though, damage scaling works out pretty well for Hit overall.

SupahFro64 shows off his corner combos with Cell. I kind of wish there were more characters that could whiff special moves mid-combo, purely for showoff-related purposes.

@gramofdata has a meter positive block string with the game’s Goku-dunking grappler, Android 16.

And last but not least, TGN Anime shows off the moveset of Captain Ginyu (and the Ginyu Force!).

As always, if you see anything worth sharing, let us know by submitting a tip for our next roundup. Thanks everyone!

See Doctrine Dark in action in this Fighting EX Layer footage from Evo Japan

As you all may know, ARIKA brought Fighting EX Layer to Evo Japan. This build in particular featured the first publicly-playable appearance of fan-favorite Doctrine Dark in the game.

For those who weren’t able to check out the game at Evo (or those who simply want to see Doctrine Dark in action once again!), ZERP was able to capture some decent off-screen footage of the game at ARIKA’s booth at the event.

The footage features a fair bit of Doctrine Dark play, and even a mirror match.

In addition to the above Doctrine Dark footage, they’ve also shared this footage of Shirase and Allen Snyder.

Fighting EX Layer is set to launch on PlayStation 4 sometime later this year.
