Mikado Arcade’s Super Street Fighter Carnival 2017 continues with ARIKA’s Fighting Layer

“Super Street Fighter Carnival 2017” marches on! SSFC2017 is the currently ongoing Japanese tournament series at Mikado Arcade for a wide variety of classic (and sometimes, obscure) arcade titles. If you missed the first few tournaments from SSFC2017, there’s a lot to catch up on!

Mikado has decided to follow one ARIKA game with another: last week we had Street Fighter EX 2+, this week we have the Namco published Fighting Layer. While Fighting Layer regrettably never made it outside of arcades, it’s still home to some fantastic ARIKA character designs and ideas. I wonder if we’ll ever see Capriccio in ARIKA’s latest unnamed project?

Are you enjoying SSFC2017? You can follow the action by subscribing to Mikado’s official YouTube channel. You can even try to catch them when they livestream!

cutcc’s “QuickNotes” series breaks down the basics of Tekken 7’s Akuma

cutcc is back with more of his “QuickNotes” series for Tekken 7! Today he’s tackling Capcom’s favorite demon, Akuma. And if you intend to master the Satsui no Hadou in 3D, you will need intense training and study time.

Akuma is a fundamentally different character from anyone else in Tekken, having abnormally weak mids and stubby limbs compared to the rest of the cast. Combining that with his lackluster lateral movement, and you’ll discover it takes a real understanding of the Tekken system to make this demon work in 3D. With effort, though, his strengths shine through- high damage output, great lows, and some of the best punishment options in the game.

Rule all of Punch Planet’s inhabitants with these Tyara combos and resets

One of the biggest pops Sector-K’s Punch Planet got during its pre-release tour of FGC tournaments was the reveal of Tyara at Evo 2017 — for obvious aesthetic reasons. Character design aside, now that the game has entered early access, we get to see and experience the full range of Tyara’s options (as they exist in the current build of 0.1.8.10).

One thing that may not have been as neatly understood about this SPD-user is the ability to freely combo off of her command grab, and the multiple ways she’s able to manipulate the Time-Canceling system. Combining her longer combos and her ability to cross-up downed opponents allows the Amazonian alien to vortex foes with ease, making her the perfect fit for set play-loving players.

AutoMattock shows off corner throw loops with Street Fighter V’s Old Zeku

Street Fighter scientist AutoMattock has been studying the ways of Bushinryu, and has put together a solid corner vortex for the latest Season 2 DLC character Zeku (specifically, from “Old” Zeku form).

After Old Zeku forces a block in the corner with EX Koku, he’s in range for a grab attempt with +1 frame advantage. Versus any characters without a 3 frame normal, he’s also able to frame trap with his cr.LP. Once you land the throw? St.HP with counter-hit quick rise buttons. If they get up and block, they are right back in the same situation, since you can special cancel into EX Koku. Neat!

desk reimagines Street Fighter V in the style of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior

Combo video maestro desk has released a new video re-imagining the sound and visuals of Street Fighter V in the style of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. Inspired by the game’s recent addition of the classic Street Fighter 2 soundtrack, desk arranged parts of the Street Fighter V character select song and Karin’s theme using sounds from the CPS-1 arcade board and recreated the game’s UI to match the classic yellow and red health bars of Street Fighter II.

The attention to detail is rather astonishing; desk went out of his way to include reproduce the sound effects for individual hits used in Street Fighter II and used a bitcrush effect to make character voices and unique sound effects match the classic style. With the video, desk said he intended to create the sort of visual package he would buy, if it were released as DLC. The end result is the product of more than 100 hours of work and reflects a creativity that expands beyond the game.

You can read more about how desk developed Street Fighter 5: The World Warrior in the video’s description; a free music pack containing the tracks in the video along with a new CPS-1 arrangement of Guile’s theme and a Megadrive arrangement of Juri’s theme is available via Bandcamp.

“Let’s hunt!” — Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis joins the cast of Tekken 7 in Spring 2018

In a weekend that has now had two hype character reveals, Bandai Namco decided not to be beaten by NetherRealm Studios’ announcement of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2. At tonight’s Tekken World Tour Finals (after a brief discussion about the input lag situation in Tekken 7) Executive Producer Katsuhiro Harada, alongside Michael Murray, walked off the stage saying, “Merry Christmas.”

Their early Christmas present to the FGC was a reveal trailer of the third DLC guest character: with Square Enix’s blessing, Noctis Lucis Caellum — the lead protagonist from Final Fantasy XV — has entered the Iron Fist Tournament (apparently to help his buddy Lars!). Equipped with his Royal Arms weapon selection and warp strikes, the character from the storied RPG franchise will make his way to the game — alongside a Final Fantasy XV Hammerhead repair shop stage — in Spring of 2018.
