The SRK Rollback: Best of August 10-16, 2018

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from August 10 to August 16, 2018!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

Frame 1:
Capcom-Fighters-Top-5-Moments-Evo-2018Relive the top 5 best Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition moments from Evo 2018, as ranked by Capcom Fighters

Evo 2018 was chock-full of fantastic moments, the top five only scratches the surface of all the great stuff that was going on!

Frame 2:
Victrix Pro FS Bison Dictator - Copy
Shoryuken at Evo 2018: Hands-on with the Victrix Pro FS aluminum-body arcade stick

What is it about aluminum that just makes arcade sticks look so good?

Frame 3:

Sound designer Mike Thal analyzes Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s game audio

Cut the salt back a minute — this is not an autopsy of a failed game, but rather a detailed look at design choices directly affect our perception of a game.

Frame 4:

Input lag angst and netcode woes: The results of r/SF’s Community Feedback poll show what players want most for Street Fighter V

Speaking of design choices: if three years into a game’s run the players are still asking for the same fixes, that might mean a developer should consider addressing those concerns…

Frame 1:
dbfz switch Goku_Power-up2_1528760344Shovel Knight digs his way into Rivals of Aether

I don’t know how tacky it is to link to my own Twitter, so here, for prosperity sake, is what I wrote in March: “The year is 2030, Shovel Knight is in every fighting game, TV show, book, restaurant. Our economy is Shovel Knight. I am Shovel Knight, and so are you.”

Frame 2:

dantarion graphs PC Fighting game player retention examined on Steam platform

dantarion’s study is fascinating, but it also just blows me away that these numbers are now “small” in some people’s eyes. My arcade-goer reflex was to respond “I was lucky if someone else showed up to the arcade that day.”

Frame 3:
yoshimitsu tekken 7
2-Hour Tekken 7 master class teaches the fundamentals of the sword-wielding cephalopod, Yoshimitsu

That Blasted Salami’s character breakdowns are easily the toppest of top tier productions in our community.

Frame 4:
Coop_Cup_17_announcement
Cooperation Cup returns for its 17th installment of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike action on January 5 to 6, 2019

Cooperation Cup is the longest-running best argument to play any particular title in the FGC. Every community can learn something from this incredible event. I don’t even like 3S and am glued to it every year.

Frame 5:
kofxiv_antonov_intro
The NEO GEO World Tour Finals approaches on August 25th

Speaking of great tournaments — I have high hopes that the world finals will cap off the NGWT well. I would love for more companies to support older titles the way SNK has here.

Input lag angst and netcode woes: The results of r/SF’s Community Feedback poll show what players want most for Street Fighter V

Street Fighter V‘s reddit community has spoken — and the results aren’t exactly surprising.

sfv falke CA

The latest Community Feedback poll on the r/StreetFighter subreddit has completed. When asked what aspects of Street Fighter V players want to see improved, the usual suspects are back in full force, with a bit of new flavor thanks to the discovery of variable input latency and the weirdness of the rollback netcode. When it comes to the overall experience, the netplay and the input latency are still the primary fixes the r/SF community are calling for.

User Experience:
Issue Votes
Netcode 734
One Sided Rollback 535
Variable Input Delay 404
Fight Money Grind 338
Input Delay 299
Training Mode – Online Training Mode 144
Training Mode – Allow DLC 127
Ranked Matchmaking – Character Select 117
Hitbox Viewer 106
P2P In Game Communication 100
Battle Lounge – Accurate Ping 73
Character Preview Prior to Purchase 73
Frame Ratings/Testing 63
Ranked Matchmaking – Unlimited Rematch 52
Ranked Matchmaking – Wait Indicator 52
Battle Lounge – Region Filter 33
Friends List Management 29
Battle Lounge – Steam Integration 28
Battle Lounge – Rank Filter 17
Training Mode – Debug 17

When it comes to the gameplay itself, the top requests are still more defensive options for this rushdown-heavy guessing game, and input lag makes a return appearance:

Gameplay Experience:
Issue Votes
More Defensive Options 607
Variable Input Delay 510
Input Delay 467
Air to Air Recovery Advantage 330
Balance Risk/Reward of Jumping/AA 324
Improve Crush Counter System 260
Hurt Boxes to Remain Extended 230
Revert DP Nerf 183
Audio Cue for Non-CC Counter Hit 152
Priority System Changes 136
Bonus Damage for Perfect Links 115

When is comes to other requests, Capcom’s long-criticized lack of communication with the fanbase is still a clear concern, while a lot of users are less-than-thrilled with some of the facial models on some characters.

Miscellaneous:
Issue Votes
Communication with Community 1008
Graphical Improvement on Certain Models 796
Lab Zero Drivers 605
Router Support 556
Linux Version 145

Of course, as a community poll we can’t expect the developer to act on any of these requests, but it’s a good indicator of what players are still wanting in SFV’s third Season; hopefully Capcom is paying attention in some capacity. You can see the poll results and the following reddit discussion on the r/SF Community Feedback thread. You can also check on the results of prior polls in the links included there.

RED BULL CONQUEST rages on with qualifiers in Orlando, Florida and online this weekend

The CONQUEST continues!

This weekend is a double-header of sorts for the RED BULL CONQUEST circuit: Orlando, Florida will play host to the next big qualifier event, while the online qualifier is being held as well. The fight in Orlando begins on Saturday, August 11th, while the online battle will unfold on Sunday, August 12th; players will put their skills to the test in Street Fighter V, Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2, and Tekken 7 to earn qualifying spots for the National Finals in Washington, D.C. in November. From the press release:

Red Bull Conquest continues the search for America’s best fighting game competitors in Orlando on Saturday, August 11 and during a special Online qualifier on Sunday, August 12. As part of this national fighting game tournament, players will battle it out in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, TEKKEN 7 and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 to determine who will be crowned their regions’ top fighters. The winners (3 from Orlando and 3 from the Online qualifier) will travel to Washington D.C. this November to compete at the Red Bull Conquest National Finals and to see if they have what it takes to be crowned National Champions.

During the Orlando stream, viewers will be able to watch some of Florida’s top fighting game athletes go head-to-head against each other, including popular Street Fighter athlete CJ Truth, who recently placed 4th at Toryuken and 9th at CEO 2018. 12-year-old Tekken prodigy, King Rey Jr, will also be competing this weekend in an attempt to take home the crown. Meanwhile, during the Online qualifier stream, the hosts will walk viewers through Red Bull Conquest so far, looking at past and future events and how the National Finals might play out in November.

Red Bull has recruited a crew of FGC experts to provide commentary during the events, with YipeS sharing insight from the Orlando qualifier, and Vicious and Tasty Steve keeping fans in the loop during the Online qualifier.

The SRK Rollback: Best of August 3-9, 2018

Welcome to the Rollback: a frame-by-frame look back at our past week’s most notable news — and our favorite SRK articles — from August 3 to August 9, 2018!

Zavian “mushin_Z” Sildra, Editor-in-Chief:

Frame 1:
scvi astaroth 1
Astaroth, Seong Mi-Na revealed for SoulCalibur VI at Evo 2018

Not totally unexpected additions (though Seong Mi-Na is a bit of a twist), but it looks like SoulCalibur VI is well on its way to a roster full of the classics. Just a few more to go.

Frame 2:
lei
New Tekken 7 Season Pass revealed, adds Anna, Lei, The Walking Dead’s Negan, and more!

Lei and Anna? About time! But Negan? As in “The Walking Dead” Negan? If you thought Noctis was from out of left field, this new bit of corporate crossover shenanigans is from another ballpark altogether.

Frame 3:
sagat
G and Sagat trailers released for Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, both available on 8/6/18

Capcom tried their best to win Evo in terms of reveals by pulling the classic (and crowd-pleasing) “out tomorrow!” maneuver. Well-played, especially since both fighters are impressive additions to the roster. Honorable mention: the hype-building campaign for G was also very impressive!

The King of Muay Thai and the President of the World are both out in the wild now, following their reveal at Evo 2018. So let’s see what the community is cooking up for these new additions to the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition roster!

VesperArcade wasted no time compiling some Sagat combos to get you started:

For those that want to chill out with the (excellent) remix of Sagat’s classic theme on the King’s Court stage, VesperArcade has provided an extended mix:

And Xuses has posted an extended mix of G’s great new theme (composed by Daniel Lindholm, like some other new fighters):

Want to sit back and watch the Character Story modes of these fighters for convenience? Xuses has you covered there, too.

Thanks to everyone that sent in tips!
