Beefy Smash Doods show off more deadly 2-on-1 combos in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Two Smashers are better than one.

The Beefy Smash Doods have shown us before how nasty things can get if a player finds themselves against two opponents in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. If you’re down to the last stock in doubles, or the unfortunate target of a surprise alliance in a three-player battle, you can expect some deadly damage coming your way if your enemies have their teamwork together!

Kicking off their fifth installment of team combos with Pit and Wario ganging up on an unsuspecting Pac-Man, the Beefy Smash Doods show off numerous impressive sequences with Zelda and the Villager, Dr. Mario and Pac-Man, Duck Hunt and Charizard (arguably a three-on-one), and others — but not double Cloud, which is probably for the best.

GO1 demonstrates his fighting spirit, through song!

After decisive Dragon Ball FighterZ victories over Teemo in the FT10 exhibition match and EG|NYChrisG in the DBFZ grand finals at Canada Cup Masters Series 2018, CO|GO1 followed up with a bit of fun. As promised by a stretch goal being met on the event’s Matcherino fundraiser, GO1 took to the main stage to sing karaoke for two very thematically appropriate songs: Dragon Ball Z‘s original theme song Cha-La Head Cha-La and THE HERO!!, the opening theme to ONE PUNCH MAN.

ShazKaraz adds a bit of life to Street Fighter II win quotes via animation in this fan video

Some work really well — some are a bit “odd”…

3D fighters have long taken advantage of their game engines to keep their characters moving during their post-victory gloating. And while technology has improved from the good ol’ days of 2D arcade fighters, it seems a staple of that style to retain the static portrait and text win quote presentation, as opposed to fully taking on the 3D style.

Street Fighter fan and content creator ShazKaraz tries a bit of a middle ground in this fan video, by providing mouth animation and voice to the classic Street Fighter II win quotes. The resulting character quotes sometimes work remarkably well, while some don’t quite work out — E. Honda’s wide grimace becomes a bit disturbing when put in motion!

Check out the action from Canada Cup Masters Series 2018: Street Fighter V FT5s, Dragon Ball FighterZ domination by GO1, and more!

A lot of great play took place at Canada Cup’s throwdown in Calgary earlier in May.

Canada Cup Masters Series — which took place a couple of weeks ago in Calgary, Alberta — saw some spectacular gameplay from some of the best competitors in two of the top titles today; American killers came up to challenge the Canadian locals in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, and CO|GO1 showed up to face Canada’s Teemo in a Dragon Ball FighterZ FT10, then going on to dominate the DBFZ brackets until a grand final against EG|NYChrisG.

Team Sp00ky’s Sabin was on site to offer streaming services, and much of the action made it to Canada Cup Gaming’s YouTube channel for our enjoyment. If you’re into seeing a lot of high-level Street Fighter V gameplay, Masters Series really delivered by switching the top 8 to a round-robin format, resulting in Echo Fox’s Punk and Justin Wong, Evil Geniuses’ Ricki Ortiz and NYChrisG, Ghost|KBrad, LPN, CYG BST|PR_Balrog, and Canada’s own CeroBlast facing off in FT5 sets against each other for literally hours of grueling SFVAE battle. We got to see Wong’s impressive Falke, Ortiz’s solid Chun-Li, and PR_Balrog’s deadly Akuma — and much more. One of the highlights of the weekend was of course the FT10 between GO1 and Teemo in Dragon Ball FighterZ:

Teemo took his loss in stride, and could be seen working on his DBFZ game by playing GO1 in casuals throughout the event; they faced each other again in DBFZ top 8, along with NYChrisG and Punk — and there’s some very impressive showings from local players in marvtronic, MegaMikeX, and Espard, too! Here again is a sampling of the action:

“Ultra Heavyweight Champion” Zangief powers his way into Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s Extra Battle mode

Another powered-up CPU challenger arrives.

It’s the second week of the Extra Battle challenge to obtain the Astaroth Crossover Costume for M. Bison in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition; but the dictator brought along some extra muscle in the form of a new Extra Battle boss challenge: the Ultra Heavyweight Champion.

As was the case with prior Extra Battle bosses, each attempt costs 1000 FM; beating this CPU-controlled powered-up version of Zangief will earn you a unique title, and awards 10,000 EXP for subsequent victories, so you might be able to earn some extra Fight Money if you can get ‘Gief’s number with a low-level character or two. He’s available to fight now — but only for two more days.

RED BULL CONQUEST hits Seattle for the second qualifier in Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, & Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2

The battle to RISE, RALLY, and CONQUER continues!

This Saturday, May 19, sees the second qualifying stop in the RED BULL CONQUEST circuit arrive at Seattle, WA to find the strongest players in Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Guilty Gear Xrd REV 2 that the city has to offer! From the press release:

Seattle is home to some of the fighting game community’s most prominent athletes, including Street Fighter V pro-athlete and professional bodybuilder Danny “DRDANNYPHAM” Pham, who is the leader of a healthy living movement in the FGC and also surprised the community with an astounding upset and 3-0 win over SFV superstar Daigo at last year’s Red Bull Battle Grounds.

FGC luminaries Persia and Yipes will be hosting the event, guiding the audience through each match, sharing insight on competitor strategies, unexpected upsets, fan-favorite players and more, up through the final matches where 3 competitors will be crowned as the chosen ones who will rep Seattle against 14 other regional teams at the Red Bull Conquest National Finals in Washington, D.C. this November.

Really, you could make a fighting game of just FFVI characters and I know I’d be happy.

Registration is now open for Canada Cup 2018, October 26-28 in Toronto, Ontario

You can sign up now for the biggest brawl in the Great White North!

Now that Calgary’s Canada Cup Masters Series 2018 has concluded, organizer Lap Chi Duong has wasted no time in announcing that registration is now open for the main event: Canada Cup is returning to Toronto, Ontario this year on October 26-28, and you can sign up right now on smash.gg!

Canada Cup is a perennial Capcom Pro Tour Premier event for Street Fighter V, and this year it will also play host to the Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament as part of the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series!

It is also a stop on the Tekken World Tour, and the Super Street Fighter II Turbo Tournament of Legends. The full list of games you can compete in is as follows:

Yoshimitsu spins and slices into SoulCalibur VI in this new character reveal trailer

Another soul-hungry warrior slices his way on to the Stage of History!

Could it be a proper SoulCalibur game without a member of the Manji Clan? Bandai Namco evidently doesn’t think so, as Yoshimitsu is indeed joining the SoulCalibur VI roster!

The trailer went live briefly in Europe, but was taken down — the embed above is a capture of that early slip.

Yoshimitsu’s title card here refers to him as “the original mechanical ninja”, so in keeping with the prequel setting of SoulCalibur VI, this is likely the first Yoshimitsu to wield the cursed blade — but he’s still got some new tricks we haven’t seen before!
