Canada Cup Masters Series 2018 results

Masters Series comes back with a vengeance!

Canada Cup Masters Series returned to Calgary, Alberta this past weekend, with some impressive displays of skill from both locals of Edmonton and Calgary, other Canadian players, and a batch of pro players that traveled in to strut their stuff. Hosted by Lap Chi Duong, the event offered competition in ten different fighting titles, and took an interesting twist by holding the Street Fighter V top 8 as a round-robin, rather than completing the double-elimination bracket.

Players will be able to try out Super Smash Bros. for Switch at several tournament events in Japan this summer

Once the Invitational is done, the game will gradually be placed into the hands of eager fans.

Shortly after the Super Smash Bros. Invitational rocks E3 this year, Nintendo’s latest entry in their platform fighter franchise will see a playable demo at a number of tournament events in Japan this summer:

Rage 2018 Summer on June 17, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
Jisedai World Hobby Fair 2018 Summer from June 23 to 24, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
Jump Victory Carnival 2018 Tokyo on July 16, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba
Jump Victory Carnival 2018 Osaka on July 22, at Intex Osaka

So far, only these events have been revealed as places where fans can try the game out — so far. Nintendo brought a playable demo of Pokkén Tournament DX to Evo 2017, however, so it’s reasonable to expect that to be a possibility for Smash this year at Evo 2018.

Be sure to catch the Super Smash Bros. Invitational on June 11 and 12!

UDON’s fun-in-the-sun special is returning for 2018 — and your work could be part of it.

Fans of swimsuits and Street Fighter can look forward to another pin-up collection from UDON Entertainment this year: the Street Fighter Summer Sports Special, a comic artwork compilation featuring the ladies (and sometimes men) of Street Fighter and its related franchises will be arriving sometime in August 2018. And if you want to be a part of the fun, UDON is calling for artwork submissions for the collection:

We’re looking for your summer-themed Street Fighter artwork – swimsuits, the beach, sports – anything with a summer theme is welcome! So sharpen your pencils, warm up your drawing tablets, and show some summer love for STREET FIGHTER!

Take on old-school killers in the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection Exhibition event at Combo Breaker 2018

Got what it takes to challenge some legends of classic Street Fighter?

After announcing three stops on the tournament circuit to celebrate the impending release of Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection with the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Tournament Series, Capcom has followed up with even more old-school action coming our way. Combo Breaker 2018 will host a Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Exhibition, featuring four competitors well-versed in Street Fighter history: Echo Fox|Justin Wong, Evil Geniuses’ Ricki Ortiz, Alex Valle, and Hx.Twitch.CYG BST|Daigo Umehara!

The fight goes down at approximately 9:00 PM CT (7:00 PM PT) on May 25. Four bold Combo Breaker 2018 attendees can join the fight via an auction to compete; from Capcom-Unity:

To become one of the other four players in this tournament, you will need to take part in an on-site auction for entry. Combo Breaker holds auction tournaments each year, where players bid on entry into a bracket, 1 by 1, until the bracket is full. For this special Street Fighter 30^th Anniversary exhibition tournament all bids will be to square off against one of the 4 competing Street Fighter legends! 100% of the auction entry money goes to the tournament champion. If you can make it to St. Charles, Illinois on May 25 and want your moment to shine, this exhibition is for you!

The exhibition will be a single elimination tournament with best three out of five matches. Each player will need to remain flexible as all 12 titles from the Street Fighter 30^th Anniversary Collection may make an appearance. Before each match in the tournament, the game that will be played will be chosen randomly to keep everyone on their feet!

Is Street Fighter V the most top-heavy fighter in over a decade? Twin Galaxies discusses the game’s character (im)balance

The Street Fighter V tier situation — that is, the disparity between what the characters that are considered high tier, and the characters that are considered low tier, can accomplish in the game — is a pretty hot topic at the moment. It leads to the perception that some players are now professing: the game’s top tiers are too good, and be it due to the game’s overall mechanics, or individual character tools, or both, the lower tiers just aren’t “viable” enough.

While many players call for balancing via buffing weaknesses rather than nerfing strengths, Capcom has always been very liberal with the application of the nerf bat on SFV, often in somewhat cryptic ways. In this article on Twin Galaxies (as part of the Life of a Low-Tier Hero series) Jeff Kotuby argues that the result is a situation where the “haves” outstrip the “have-nots” so completely that there’s only one way to assure victory and enjoyment in SFV: pick a top tier.

Now, who is exactly in the current “haves” club is also open to debate: Guile, Cammy, Akuma, and Abigail are regular mentions as examples of how “top-heavy” SFV has become. Kotuby themselves talks about how they’ve gotten greater success and fun out of the game by dropping Ryu for Akuma — which other Ryu mains have as well, if they haven’t dropped SFV altogether. But what if you want to be a “low tier hero” and win with a have-not? Kotuby links to some Twin Galaxies resources to help you take that approach as well.

Revisit Ryu’s early arcade days in this original Street Fighter gameplay video

Ready to see Ryu knock Gen out with just three fireballs?

Capcom’s massive Street Fighter retrospective compilation — the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection — is arriving on your platform of choice soon, bringing many FGC favorites such as Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike back into our homes. And of course, the collection includes the game that started it all: the original Street Fighter.

Those unfamiliar with this game (definitely iconic, but maybe not the best in terms of gameplay…) can get better acquainted with it via this hefty gameplay sampling, where you can see Ryu tear through many long-unseen CPU-controlled fighters. The Hadouken and the Shoryuken were definitely in a different power class back then…

Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch (with an exclusive Tournament Battle mode) on May 29th. Training and Versus modes have just been confirmed for some titles.

Taiwan’s Capcom Pro Tour Premier event TWFighter Major 2018 gets bumped from June to August

A slight change of plans for an important stop on the fighting game circuit in Asia.

Taiwan’s Premier stop on the Capcom Pro Tour this year is going to suffer a bit of a delay — due to a venue-related issue, TWFighter Major 2018 has been rescheduled from its original dates in June to new dates in August, on the 18th and 19th.

Body Count Fighting announces a new weekly online tournament series for Dragon Ball FighterZ, Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, & Injustice 2

Prove your strength online, and you could win some cash and a shot at a live match in a future BCF event.

Body Count Fighting wants to give everyone a chance to join in on the action — and now you can from your own home, with the BCF Online Tournament series. They will hold online events weekly in one of four featured games — Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, Dragon Ball FighterZ, or Injustice 2 — each with a $250 prize pool, and a chance to earn points towards an online final, and ultimately a live feature match in Los Angeles, CA in an upcoming Body Count Fighting event.

Entry is free, and registration opens at 12:01 AM on the day of each event. The first cycle kicks off on May 17th with Street Fighter V. Interested contenders should go check out the event page on smash.gg! Find more info on the full tournament cycle on the league page.
