BornFree has become well-known for his excellent video interviews of players and personalities throughout the fighting game community. He’s talked to a lot of top players, and often — so it’s safe to say he’s got a pretty good idea of what high-level competitors are happy about — and not happy about — in their games of choice!
With rumors persisting about an upgrade to Street Fighter V on the horizon in the form of “Super Street Fighter V” (or possibly Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition?), BornFree speaks up as to what his own wish list is for SSFV — if it happens. His picks for areas that need improvement include loading times, matchmaking/netcode, in-game player-to-player communication, character balancing, and a number of aspects where the game can spruce up its overall presentation — as well as requesting the return of the King of Muay Thai! Watch the video below for his whole list, and why each is important to the players.
Now that Skullgirls has broken over a million copies sold on Steam, what’s in store for the game? The title is described as “finished” — no additional content or patches from Lab Zero are expected for 2nd Encore. What’s next, and what’s left?
In the video below, voice actor Kai Kennedy discusses what is still going on in the Skullgirls community: while Skullgirls 2nd Encore won’t be updated again, it still has a very active and dedicated community of devoted fans, players, and competitors — so if you still want to get into the game in its “twilight years,” there’s no reason not to. Kennedy also gets some information from DaPurpleSharpie about the ongoing Skullgirls Tour, some words from the Skullgirls Mobile developer Hidden Variable about future content and support for the mobile game, and lastly some clarification from developer Mike Zaimont about what it would take to see a full “Skullgirls 2” sequel.

IndieGoGo backers of Mane6’s in-development game Them’s Fightin’ Herds have enjoyed access to a beta version of the unusual indie fighting title. To give the rest of us a look at the gameplay in its current state, eastyy uploaded some footage of the game in action to YouTube:
If you think the character design has a very Ponyish vibe, that’s no coincidence: the game is set in an original universe designed by Lauren Faust, producer and developer for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Under the cute cartoony look there seems to be a potentially solid fighting game engine, featuring a four-button input layout, an in-depth combo system, GGPO-powered netplay, and mechanics such as “Juggle Decay” to curb endless juggling.
eastyy followed up with a video detailing their impressions of the game and its engine/mechanics, as well as discussing a bit of the game’s history:
While the title has certainly missed its previously-projected “Q1 2017” release window, you can read more about it on its Steam Greenlight page.
Agreement promises improved pay and working conditions for video game voice actors.
After more than a year, SAG-AFTRA — a union representing a multitude of entertainment professionals including actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, voice-over artists and many more — has rallied against 11 different video game companies for improved treatment and financial compensation of the voice actors in many of our favorite games. The strike included Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, publishers of Injustice 2 and other NetherRealm Studios titles. We first reported on the strike back in October 2016.
It seems now that a tentative agreement has been reached, and the strike may at last come to an end. As stated by SAG-AFTRA:
The terms of the tentative agreement, which was reached early Saturday morning, include a new bonus structure that provides an additional payment to performers. The bonus payment, which is due no later than the release date of the game, is based on the number of sessions worked on each game, beginning with a $75 payment on the first session and totaling $2,100 after 10 sessions worked.
“This is an important advance in this critical industry space. We secured a number of gains including for the first time, a secondary payment structure which was one of the members’ key concerns,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris. “The courage of our members and their fortitude these many months has been admirable and I salute them. We are always stronger together.”
Keythe Farley, chair of the SAG-AFTRA Interactive Negotiating Committee, said the strike delivered key victories for member performers in the video game community.
“The bonus payments we have now are significantly larger now than what we had 11 months ago. And the existence of additional payments beyond your session fee is in the video game world for good, both in our high-budget and independent promulgated agreements,” said Farley. “Those are the victories that this strike has brought us.”
The deal also contains an employer commitment to continue working with SAG-AFTRA on the issue of vocal stress during the term of the agreement. Moreover, the agreement does not include several proposals sought by management, including a provision that would have fined performers for being late or distracted at session, another that would have required agents to submit performers for low-paying “atmospheric voice” sessions or face fines, and a possible revocation of their union franchise, and another that would have allowed employers to use their permanent staff to do covered work outside of the collective bargaining agreement.
The contract will next be reviewed by the SAG-AFTRA National Board at its October meeting.
The new update seems to have brought a new — and alarming — bug along for the ride.
Injustice 2 players are reporting on social media that the new October patch for the game is having an unintended (and unpleasant) side-effect: the loss of various Gear, Shaders, even abilities for one or more of their characters. The lost items have apparently included Legendary and paid content as well, in some cases.
While the cause is currently unknown (outside of it being related to the patch), the publisher has indicated on Twitter that they are aware of the problem, and are looking into it.
To our players – we’re aware of the issues with Gear and are currently investigating. Thank you for your patience!
Fuzzy guard breaking — taking advantage of how the game engine treats high/low blocking and blockstun to open up the opponent with effectively unblockable high attacks — isn’t talked about too much in Street Fighter V, but it is still something you can capitalize on with certain characters. Kolin, the Phantasm of Snow and Ice, is such a character.
In the video below, perfectfaro shares a selection of chilling setups that take advantage of fuzzy guard breaking. Often utilizing Kolin’s Hailstorm or Vanity Step, Kolin players will want to take note and see how they can integrate these into their own gameplan! Turn on the CC/subtitles to read the in-video explanation of each setup.
The latest stage to blast out of the past has an appropriately reminiscent theme.
Street Fighter V is getting a big content update today, which includes (among lots and lots of costumes…) Cammy’s classic Super Street Fighter II level remade for the current game as the English Manor stage. The update isn’t fully live yet (servers are still down) but Xuses has pulled the theme out for us to have a listen. As a version of Cammy’s theme, it sounds much more like her classic theme arrangement than more modern versions, appropriately.
